  • Blessed Mankind

    Blessed Mankind

This story is a small travel through various incidents of the society. The motive is to establish a positive opinion regarding the need to use knowledge to lead a happy life.

It was a pleasant spring morning when I peered through the window into the beautiful meadow outside. There laid blooming trees lining up the ends of the road and in between the trees were the poles joining up the electric wires. As I was staring out, my eyes caught up with a cute little cuckoo trying to settle itself on the surface of a swinging wire. There was a heavy breeze chilling up the morning, perturbing the bird’s balance. It soared up its wings for once but still remained on the wire.

My mind dwelled up with the thoughts of all the duties of that bird rather leaving my own duties of the day aside. As the day breaks, the bird flies around everywhere, finds its prey, takes them to its nest for its chicks, enjoys good time at the nest, the day ends and repeats. The quests that struck my mind was “why we humans have to suffer a lot for surviving in this competitive world? What makes the difference in the life of humans from other living beings?” and the answers were not so tough. It’s just the thing we colloquially name as ‘The Sixth Sense’ that makes all these differences between various species. From a religious view, it is believed that the number of senses vary from smaller organisms to the higher animals and at last but not the least, humans are said to possess the highest level, the sixth sense, which is regarded as the ability to analyze things and the ability to find solutions to various problems. To add up, the level of the sense not only differentiates man from other animals, but also differentiates the humans among themselves. This sense, which we also regard as intelligence decides the supremacy of a person in a society and here it becomes the answer to my question of ‘the so-competitive environment’. My mind scrolled itself to the known list of great scientists, politicians, artists and other achievers in various fields. I also thought about the very purpose of education, i.e improving one’s knowledge by learning the existing things of the world and promoting creativity for inventions.

Running into the memories, someday, I started out to the day’s chores. On the way I listened to the people about the talks of the town such as the newly introduced car, earthquake-resistant constructions, and medication for the deadly virus and so on. I reached one of my friend’s home where I saw her little six-year-old girl playing. While having a chat with my friend, I kept an eye on the curious kid who was playing with water paints in a small palette. Suddenly she gave a joyous scream exclaiming “Mom, look here. I have got green by using blue and yellow paints.” My friend went near her and cheered up her telling “Yes, my dear. So now you know that mixing of two colors can give you new colors” and taught her other derivable colors. I wondered how the little girl was learning things through amusements and left her home.

Another day, I came across the news of the newly launched satellite for researching the possibility of life in other planets.

It made me more pleased about the scientific advancements that were undergoing in my country. I regarded myself that it was all because of the knowledge that man possess, that makes him travel the journey of life. Man has been given the capacity to differentiate things, to learn from mistakes, create from the knowledge and tackle the problems that come in his way and that made him unique from all the other creatures of the world.

Suddenly the thing that popped out of my mind was about the cruelties existing in the society. Some days, the spaces of the newspapers were filled all about illegal actions, such as thefts, murders or about unworthy relationship troubles. In making truth of someone’s words “Good and evil go hand in hand”, people have started indulging in senseless acts. I wondered how heartless men have become over time that they don’t understand the pain and harm they cause to others. We have been created with greater powers, strengths and talents. Still many people have not realized the value of the sense, a blessing showered upon the human race, and they exist to be beasts. At present, much space of the society has become so wild and rude which could be understood from all the evils happening in the recent days. Crime rates are achieving summits and people have lost their senses. The world has become educationally, professionally competitive for the people with sense on one hand and a place of illegal, inhuman pleasures for the senseless creatures on the other. I said to myself that, the destination of the people in their journey of life may be better or worse depending on their intuitions, which again means their response through their sense. If people use their knowledge for good deeds, the Earth would become a happier and peaceful planet for all. I wished for such a day to come, where people will not be competitive for monitorial statuses and fake relationships but equally contented and peaceful.

When my mind was fighting with all these thoughts about the similarities and differences between men and animals, the little feathers fought with the air and the cuckoo made its way through the journey of its life.

“I saw her crying on the roof. I heard her saying that the world is not beautiful anymore .

She was unaware that i saw her shining like a diamond in the sky.” – Rohan Malhotra said that to the senior inspector who came near his building to investigate about the murder case of Naina Malik.

“Hello, I am good, and Nainaa”- Rekha ji said so with great exhalation and stopped saying anything after calling out Naina’s name.

IT WAS THAT , BECAUSE OF CONTINUES FORCING NAINA’S PARENTS FORCED HER TO GET MARRIED. AND NIKHIL HAD ALSO FOUND SAHIL AND HAD JUST LEFT HIM ON A WARNING.

“What happened? Had Naina said you something? Is she ohk?” – Naina’s dad cried out with concern.

“What happened! She is crazy. She don’t even think before doing anything, whether she is always very opened up or whether she always want to annoy us.”- Rekha ji cried out loudly.

“Earlier she was always annoyed and now she is always screaming on us,as if we our her servants. She had not even allowed my son to touch her . Its been 2 months of her wedding. “Rekha ji,their is nothing like what you are thinking,Its just,”-Naina’s mother was about to change the topic but Naina’s dad stopped her and said,

“There is no use to hide anything ,Seema, Everything is finished . I was telling Nikhil before hand only to tell everything to them, but no ,he never listen to what i say.”Cried out Naina’s dad.

“Tell me right now, what is their Shashi ji, tell me”-Cried out Rekha ji.

“Nothing Rekha ji , I will tell you soon but till then you sit here i’ll get some tea for you.”-Naina’s Mother tried to change the topic again, but failed again.

“Please Seema ji, I want to know.””You people better tell me”-Now Rekha ji had become really serious about the topic.

NAINA’S DAD DID NOT WANTED TO HIDE ANYTHING NAD HE SPOKE UP EVERYTHING.

REKHA JI LEFT WITHOUT SPEAKING ANYTHING.

    NEXT DAY

    DOOR BELL RANG

“Coming coming,Mumma make tea for me,”- Nikhil cried out while opening the door.

IT WAS NAINA ON THE DOOR WITH ALL HER STUFF AND DIVORCE PAPERS IN HER HAND. SHE WAS SMILING AND AS HER BROTHER OPENED THE DOOR SHE SAID,

“I did it, i am back. hahhahah, I am so happy now,”- Naina had tears in her eyes and broad smile on her face.

“Naina, you here, what is all this?”- Nikhil was confused to see Naina there back

“Naina,Bacha, I was knowing about it, This is going to happen, Your dad had spoiled your life “- Cried out Naina’s mother.

“No,It is not Dad who destroyed my life. It is you guyz”-Naina broke out into deep tears.

“I had told you guyz that i don’t want to get married that soon but you did’nt listned to what i said. Now see I am back. hahhah”- Naina was still crying.

“Naina, Shut up. “- Nikhil became furious and screamed on Naina.

“Shhhhh.. Now i won’t be listening to anyone of you.I am going to Sahil and would be staying with him.”- Naina screamed more loudly.

“You better not go to that guy back. You got that.”- Nikhil said again.

“Why should i listen to you Bhai, after all what you did to me?You really expect that from me now?Sorry but now i cannot do that.”- Naina said in a very calm voice and strongly.

“NAINA”-Nikil very loudly said that to Naina and was just about to slap.her when Naina holded his hand.

“You better not Mr. Nikil Malik., I am not your sister now.Your sister had died the day you decided about my life “- Naina said so.

  • Kirthiga Reddy : Face of Facebook India

Kirthiga Reddy : Face of Facebook India

Today Facebook is everywhere and of course India too. Most of us are connected through this social platform to the world, in fact this media is working as a huge platform for many talents across India. But a few of us only are aware of the story of Managing Director at Facebook India which truly inspires the young aspiring women of India.

Kirthiga Reddy born and brought up in a middle class family of Chennai, India was always expected to sacrificed during childhood to cover up the expenses of family.

Post her bachelors degree in engineering he started climbing stares of success. Initially, she worked as an assistant with Yashwant Kanetkar helping him to finish his book on programming samples. This helped her achieve the financial situation to move to USA where she completed her M.S. and M.B.A.

Reddy has worked with quiet a huge number of top notch companies like Motorola, Silicon Graphics etc. She was the only women in her team to achieve such heights, the first Indian employee to have worked at such a giant level with so many M.N.Cs. Her this profile helped her to gain a career in Facebook India to which she made many contributions and achieved the position of CEO of Facebook India.

Reddy is soon shifting to US again to join the Facebook at it headquarters. This is the evidence of her level of expertise that facebook is hiring her at its headquarters.

Her few words of excitement as a proud CEO and employee of such a huge company and as a concerned mother of two daughters, during one of her interview was –

“ When my family relocated to India, we knew that we would have to move back to the U.S someday. It is a bittersweet moment to that the return time frame  is coming up in 6-12 months. Our two daughters start high school and middle school respectively this year- which serves as a natural transition point to make this move back.”

The success journey from a middle class Indian child to an USA citizen has not been easy for Kirthiga. Shifting to places and yet showing a responsive attitude has helped her a lot to achieve success. In the beginning Facebook did not had any office in India and also was not aware of the fact that how should it work to expand its business within Indian boundaries but Kirthiga initialized step and has ran many success and many failed campaigns to popularize Facebook in India.

We are all aware of the fact that racism has always been an issue for Indian at overseas but only a few like Mrs. Reddy could overcome racism and win hearts by their exceptional skills and dedication. Kirthiga’s confidence level has always increase with her amazingly increasing graph of achievements , which has helped her willingly face a tougher battle in USA  at the facebook headquarters being an Indian.

  • THE TRUE GENTLEMAN

    THE TRUE GENTLEMAN

Gentleness is innate. It is reflected not in the complexion or appearance of a person. It is reflected in the deeds of an individual. A true gentleman is a paradigm of human qualities. He is endowed with benevolence, magnanimity, integrity of character, honesty and empathy. He is humble, polite and is a true portrait of kindness and virtues.

I was travelling in a train. In a berth beside me, a woman was travelling with her kids and lots of luggage. She was talking to another woman, who was a stranger. They both were busy gossiping and telling each other about their family affairs, sharing their joys and sorrows and complaining about their in-laws. Sometimes, they would burst into laughter and on the next moment, silence would fall heavily over the two ladies. Their kids were playing. When both of them were chatting and giggling, one of the ladies saw a man on the above berth who was listening to their gossip intently. The woman got suspicious of him. He looked like a rogue with unshaved beard, dark and thick mustaches, beady, pretending eyes and sanguine nose. He looked exactly like a devil.

At the next station, the woman got down to purchase something from the vendors. Suddenly, the man also got down. This made the lady more suspicious. She, at once, looked inside her berth and saw that her suitcase was missing. It contained gold jewellery. She was greatly astonished. Then, she remembered that when she was telling the other woman that she was on her way to Jaipur and was going there to attend her brother’s wedding, the man was listening very carefully. She was sure that it was the same man who had stolen her suitcase and no one else. I was observing what was happening. I thought to help her but my parents always instruct me not to talk to the strangers while you are travelling. So, I remained sitting at my place. I had to get down at the next station.

Finally, I reached my destination. Since, the train arrived before time, I was waiting for my parents to pick me up. I saw that the lady also alighted at the next station and lodged a complaint with the railway police. Nothing happened. She was sobbing and telling the police that it was her brother’s wedding. She was waiting at the station only with a hope of getting back her suitcase. I could see her children also crying along with her. But the lady looked so worried, looking here and there with all the thoughts muddled up in her mind. Then, she suddenly saw the man whom she took to be a trickster. It seemed he was coming towards her. She became tensed and grabbed her children. He approached her with a smile. He returned the suitcase to her telling her that the other woman she was talking to, was a trickster. He also told her that he alighted halfway of his journey because he had seen that woman getting down with the suitcase which was not hers. The woman thanked him and also apologized him for taking him as a trickster. He was a true gentleman.

Meanwhile, my parents arrived and I described them the whole incident that happened.

The crust of the story is that we should not judge a person from the circumstances as the circumstantial evidence is not adequate for the judgement of a person. The moral we derive from this story is that we should not judge a person by his appearance, but by his deeds.

  • The Time Traveler

    The Time Traveler

The country of Corolia is at the verge of extinction. Only Portia has
the fortune to reverse the dreadful fate of the country. But will she be
able to accomplish what is best for the world, keeping in view her role
    as a human being

I woke up with a start. My eyes scanned a familiar white ceiling
beneath painted lilac flowers flowing in all directions like a comely
corsage, in contrast to the pale walls around. Among the several
familiar objects, a silver metal ball, as small as an apricot, placed
snugly in a golden cloth on top of a bedside drawer caught my eye. A
minute ago, the silver ball had been miles away, in the hands of a man
who was aware of the power possessed by the visibly harmless entity. A
minute ago, my bedroom, the room that I lay in was not as bright, the
lilac flowers not so pretty and the pale walls not as crisp. A minute
ago, the country of Corolia was not in chaos…
Regaining my senses, I realized that whatever needs to be done must
be done quickly. The time traveler had successfully taken the world
back to where it was a month ago and there was no scope for mindless
self indulgence. In the blink of an eye I was up and about. I did not
intend on wasting the precious gift of the time travelling gizmo which
I was fortunate enough to procure from its inventor, Ian Crawford.
“You intend to use the Cronus to prevent the mass destruction which
will soon dissolve most of the people here and I will not deny us or
any other person a chance to survive. But Portia, my dear, remember
that you have only a month. Cronus cannot be reused”, Dr. Ian had said
while he handed me the gadget, Cronus, to time travel, and inferred
    that he trusted me.
Without further ado, I leaped across my bedroom in one swift motion
and drove to 111 Baskin Street, St. Petersburg, Corolia, the place
where the conspiracy surfaced. The ruins of a fifty year old abandoned
mansion, located at the end of the deserted Baskin Street, housed the
surreptitious conference of ‘The Totem’, a group established a year
ago with the motive of starting a new way of life. About forty people,
having powerful designations in distinct departments of the Corolian
government constituted The Totem. One of them was I, Portia Ivanov,
    Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“Corrupt, unjust, repugnant. It’s the year 2021 and yet the Corolian
government is all those things. Remember, comrades, why we are here.
It is our duty towards our nation, our people, our family and
generations to come. Corolia needs a new and better way of life.
Increases in crime rates are drastic, living conditions are pathetic,
overpopulation has caused shortage of food supplies, citizens brawl
over petty issues and behave like animals. But unlike animals, these
people refuse to be tamed. Worst of all, our neighboring countries
seek vengeance for the wars we had waged years ago. They would rather
enjoy our annihilation than help us recover”, I heard Mr. Steve Munez
address the assembly as I entered the secret chamber.
Darting a quick glance at my apparition, he continued,”Well, Miss
Portia here has come with a solution to the problem at hand. As the
superior authorities await a miracle to change the terrible fate of
our nations, we must take the matter into our hands.” Steve opened his
palm and looked at me; cue for me to hand him the silver ball. Despite
my body trying to refrain me, I complied. Steve gave me a wry smile
    and received reciprocation.
The tiny silver ball was a prototype. The Totem’s confidential lab
contained about a thousand such working models. Each ball contained
enormous amount of xerophrodite, an element that could easily
suffocate twenty thousand people to death. Using these balls filled
with xerophrodite in public places and infiltrating gas lines and
water pipes with this hazardous element, was the Totem’s master plan
to eliminate the Corolian population, save a few who would then be
responsible to build a new Corolia, an ideal nation. The process was
to begin today but xerophrodite would take nearly a month to kill a
person once it enters its system, slowly disabling all his vital
    organs.
Steve finished his speech and the conference was adjourned. Soon,
xerophrodite would enter the lungs of at least two million people in a
population of 2.1 million. I observed him carefully as he walked to
the door. I knew that time was running out but suppressed the urge to
check my watch. I took a deep breath and started counting in reverse
under my breath.”Ten, nine, eight, seven…”
It was now or never. The lives of an enormous population of people were
at stake and I could save them all if I ran out the door and talked to
Steve. A horrendous nation harboring a terrible set of human beings,
but human beings nevertheless. It was not up to mere human beings to
decide the fate of fellow beings, it is up to God and God gives his
children second chances. Even Corolia could recover and restore its
lost glory. I had agreed to help the Totem, but now, I see things with
a new perspective. I have seen people dying, corpses stacked in piles
on the street, the surviving few moaning over the loss of their loved
ones. After all, I travelled back in time to prevent this.
I rushed out the door and paced towards Steve. He turned around and
shot a bewildered look at me, “What’s the matter, Portia? We are so
close to our destiny. After a month, the remaining citizens, us, will
set up a new government, a new way of life, a perfect nation where
nobody dies of hunger, they all live in sanitary conditions and help
each other, the way an ideal nation is meant to be.”
I pondered for words to reply but none escaped my mouth. My throat
dried, my heart raced and I opened my mouth to tell Munez to stop this
as it was outrageous but I did not. I wanted to tell him that this was
madness. I closed my eyes for a moment and tried to calm down.”You are
right, Steve. We will bring back happiness to our country and once we
achieve it, not a single person will remember this”, I said with a
straight face. Steve stroked my shoulder and walked away, leaving me
    alone with my thoughts.
Sometimes, we cannot leave things up to God. There is a reason He has
blessed us with the ability to think and analyze. There is no good or
evil, just timing. What is good for a certain period of time may turn
evil for another period of time. Sometimes, sacrifices must be made to
pave way for a better life in the long run. I decided to sacrifice the
lives of my fellow beings in order to give their own children a better
    life.

  • ESCAPE FROM UNEARTHLY BEAUTY

    ESCAPE FROM UNEARTHLY BEAUTY

The story is about a vampire turning into a mortal with the help of his friend. Story possesses many adventures and interesting features. Based on my fantasy I have written how Alvina made Baldovino’s life better. Hope you like it!

A dark image gushing from the woods, so fast and so cold. It seems like the thunderstorm has sent its coming, like the winds have turned their routes and the Gods are up to something really charismatic. That dark image running through the twilight forests provides an image of an evil being. Lips spurting out blood, skin as cold as ice, complexion as white as snow, eyes hot red, frown on the face and dark black shiny hair.

A totally different scene here at Alvina’s house.

“Dear Alvina, Come and have your dinner. It’s ready.” Mom said.

“No mom, I am in no mood to have dinner. I am really not hungry at all.” Alvina said.

“Missing meals is not a good habit, Alvina.” Dad said.

“Please dad, I am not a kid now.” Alvina said.

“We are your parents and we still have a right to guide you, baby.” Mom said.

“I am sorry dad. Sorry mom. I am so upset, just don’t know what all am I talking.” Alvina said.

“You can freely tell us what upsets you dear.” Said dad.

“I am not at all beautiful. No girly traits in me. I am so boring, so idiotic and so childish. I am so not a dating material.” Alvina spoke her heart out.

“Oh poor baby! You are so beautiful that even the angels envy you.” Mom said.

“That’s what you feel and not the mirror hung in my room.” Alvina said.

“It’s not the mirror that defines your beauty or judges whether you are beautiful or not. It’s you who can really define the beauty in yourself.” Suggested dad.

“Ah! These bookish thoughts don’t work in practical life where guys just need pretty girls by their side and not me at all.” Alvina said with a feeling of dismal on her face.

To this mom replied, “Now I know. It is the prom night that is making my dearest Alvina so upset. Isn’t it?”

“You finally got it mum.” Alvina said.

Dad cheering up the ambience, said “Ok, now forget all this. Let’s have a bowl of ice cream each.

“No, you both enjoy. I think I should go for a walk.” Alvina said this and started walking towards the main door of the house.

Mom from her behind- “Baby, it’s too cold outside. Don’t forget to wear your muffler and overcoat.”

“Yeah mom.”, and the door shut.

Mom and dad expressed their worries for their daughter as they felt she was not happy with her life but consoled each other that their daughter is brave enough and will definitely get over everything and will finally appreciate what life has in store for her.

Now out in the dark night, with the sounds of the wolves shouting in the woods, the owls sitting on the branches of tall trees. The cool breeze blowing and a tinge of moon light enlightening the entire atmosphere. Alvina finds peace in this atmosphere. She starts walking down the road and towards the lake near their township. The sweet sound of the lake water and the coolness of the breeze brought a mild smile on Alvina’s face. She finds a rocky surface adjacent to the lake and sits on the rock staring constantly at the water by her sparkling eyes. The glass over Alvina’s eyes usually hides the beauty of eyes but seldom romanticize with the moon’s light falling over her face. Her black shiny hair beautifies the fair skin and the nature’s beauty within her denies the racism and the quintessential epitome are her eyes and the flow of her delicate body is like a cherry on the cake. Sitting at the lakeside, Alvina’s attention shifted from the lake water to the woods across the lake. She tried not to get attracted by the beauty of the woods because they were considered to be dangerous and haunted by the people of her town. Strangely, she was captivated by the aura of the forest. It seemed as if the trees or the woodland was magnetizing Alvina towards itself. Alvina had never experienced or gone through such a feeling ever before.

She suddenly got off the rock and started walking towards the dense forest. Walking continuously, alone, dark and the deep forest became denser. The trees became taller, the growling of wild animals became stronger, the winds started blowing faster and the ambience became frosty. Suddenly, Alvina saw a shadowy figure behind a tall and dark tree. She found the figure familiar as it seemed a man. She wanted to ignore and move on into the forest deeper. Strangely, the same power which was attracting Alvina towards the forest was now captivating her towards that figure behind the tree. It was as if someone was controlling her soul to go and see that figure. So, she took a step forward and started approaching that figure.

Now, the other strange thing that happened was that the more Alvina went nearer to that figure the more it moved further. She could not just reach him in spite of trying so hard. She thought she had missed him. She also tried to find him but had no trace of him. Alvina finally decided to turn back and leave for home. Gradually, she crossed back that forest and reached the lake, crossed the lane to her township and reached her home. Trying to sleep, Alvina was lying on her bed when she realized she had left the window of her room open. She got up to shut the window when came in front of her gleaming eyes the scene of the woods across the lake. Thinking of the shadowy figure that she saw in the forest, Alvina went off to sleep expecting something new to happen the following day.

“Wake up Alvina. It’s morning. See outside, it’s a beautiful day and the sun is shining so bright.” Mom tried to awake Alvina.

The golden rays of the sun fell on Alvina’s face reflecting such an innocence and calmness that the viewer may fall for it. It seemed as the sun itself wanted Alvina to make her think herself to be beautiful and pretty. Another day at college, Alvina found college really boring and nasty as she had no friends and guys never approached her. She was considered to be a studious and a boring girl by all. This is what she thought of herself. Bored by the college day, then Alvina’s day routine at home, night conversations with mom and dad and then came the awaited time. Alvina after her talks with her parents again went to that forest with a hope to meet the man she saw the last day. This time, Alvina thought of sitting at the place where she saw the man last night and waited there. Somewhere in her heart she had a feeling that the man knew that Alvina wanted to meet him. An hour passed, there was no sign of anyone approaching. Half more hour went by and there came no one around. Disappointed, Alvina thought of leaving. As soon as she got up from the rock beside the lake on which Alvina was sitting the night before. Mesmerized, Alvina ran towards the lake, reached that big rock and what she saw. The same shadowy figure was sitting at her old place. She was so happy to see him sitting on that rock that without further thoughts, Alvina went to him and sat beside him on the same rock. Alvina tried to speak, “Hey, I am Alvina. I saw you sitting in the forest last night. I could not just stay and had to come to you. My mind, my soul, my body, all wanted to see you as if you were hypnotizing them all. It was a feeling that I have never had before. As if you were calling me through my inner sense.” Alvina spoke her heart out. To which the man said, “I didn’t do anything girl.” Alvina was not expecting such an answer. She thought he would also be as excited as Alvina but he showed least interest in whatever she expressed. She felt disheartened. After so long, Alvina was believing in herself and approached someone and now she felt that it all got wasted. Disheartened, Alvina thought of leaving and going back home. She got up and turned away. Suddenly, the winds started blowing faster than usual and the noise of the water in the lake got louder.

The man said holding Alvina’s hand, “Hey! I am Baldovino. Please don’t go.”

Hearing this, Alvina just could not hide her happiness. She was overjoyed with his words. She wanted to hug him but controlled her feelings. Alvina felt really special when Baldovino held her hand. A thing that Alvina now realized. Baldovino was cold, too cold. His touch was freezing cold. On observing Baldovino closely, Alvina noticed that he had red eyes, dark black hair, pale freezing cold skin, red lips as if painted with color. He had hypnotizing eyes and was very handsome and alluring. He possessed a strange unearthly beauty. Alvina felt scared for the first time, but her happiness overcame this fear and she wanted to stay there with Baldovino. No conversation, no movements, no looks and nothing except silence between them. They both just wanted to enjoy the serene moment of peace between them. Away from the bustle and hubbub of the city, Alvina and Baldovino wanted to rejoice in their own moment. The midnight moon let them savor the time they had together. Days passed and Alvina and Baldovino kept on meeting each other every evening. Sometimes beside the lake, near the forest, on they went boating in the lake.

One day Alvina decided to ask Baldovino for college prom. Baldovino was initially hesitant about it but finally agreed to go with Alvina. Alvina was very excited. She was only planning about their dresses, their hairdo, etc. for the prom for two whole days. Just a night before the prom, Alvina’s mother asked her about whether she had someone to go with. Alvina told her mother about Baldovino and that she will go to the prom with him.

Finally, the prom night was here. Alvina dressed beautifully in a pink flair gown, off shouldered, hair left loose and white sparkling heels. Baldovino in a light grey suit with a pink bow tie and grey formal shoes with properly tucked black shiny hair. He was really nervous to go to the prom but he didn’t want to upset Alvina by refusing to go as he could see her enthusiasm and cheerfulness and didn’t want to ruin her mood. The college prom was beautifully organized. A fully lighted garden, well set DJ system, games for couples, drinks and delicacies and special prizes and awards for the people. Alvina and Baldovino were standing beside a lit tree and were embracing the moment as well as each other. A waiter came to serve them drinks. On seeing a glass of red wine on the tray, Baldovino felt something strange. Horridly, his eyes turned fiery, a strange frown came on his face and he could not control his thirst. Baldovino was becoming horrifying, he wanted BLOOD! HUMAN BLOOD! All this happened to him as he was surrounded by so many humans out there. Alvina was surprised rather, shocked on seeing him like this. Before she could utter a word, Baldovino left and ran out of the crowded area, down the lane, across the lake and vanished into the forests. It was a harrowing experience for Alvina. She just could not believe her eyes and was really afraid of Baldovino. In spite of being so afraid of Baldovino, Alvina wanted to meet him at least once and clear all the questions she had in her mind about him. For four continuous nights after the prom, Alvina searched for Baldovino desperately. She waited at the rock where they used to sit beside the lake. She went round the forest but al in vain.

One dark winter night, Alvina was as usual sitting on the rock on the lakeside when she came across a spine-chilling view. She saw a shadowy, dark black creature running furiously behind an innocent deer. What she saw was that the creature caught the deer, tear its neck apart and started drinking its blood. For Alvina, this was like the worst nightmare. She was abashed and panic stricken. Her hands trembling with fear and soul stunned with the view. Alvina was extremely daunted. At the moment, she had a doubt that the creature was Baldovino. She wanted to go near him and check. She started walking towards him. Her mind said it was Baldovino but her heart didn’t agree. She went and touched his shoulder with her palm. The dark creature turned and he was Baldovino. Alvina shouted a loud cry, her eyes filled with tears and body quivering with fear. She ran away with a crestfallen heart.

After this incident, Alvina was totally heartbroken. She didn’t sleep for numerous nights, she didn’t eat, she didn’t talk to her parents, and she missed college. She used to lie on her bed for the whole day. On the other side, Baldovino was missing Alvina. He wanted to meet her, see her and tell her about the truth of his life. Baldovino had never this ever before. He could not hunt, his heart was developing a soft corner for Alvina. He was fructifying feeling of belongingness for Alvina. The same feelings were being developed in both of their hearts. Both of them were missing each other and had developed a place for each other in their hearts but were not ready to believe and agree to it.

When love sways, everything else dissuades.

So, Baldovino took a courageous step and decided to meet Alvina. He sent her a letter asking her to meet him at their sacred place-the rock beside the lake just once. He promised her that he will never ask her to meet him if she would not be convinced by whatever Baldovino will explain. Alvina was very happy when she read the letter and was excited to meet her brave friend. That chilly and foggy night, Alvina and Baldovino sitting next to each other on that dear rock beside the lake. An exquisite feeling for both. The conversation started and Baldovino told Alvina the whole truth about his life, his existence and survival. He told her that he was a VAMPIRE- a blood sucking killer. He told her that their clan did not harm humans but attacked only the animals for fulfilling their thirst for blood. The discussion went on merely about Baldovino’s life. After the repartee ended they came on a positive conclusion. Alvina explained “We will visit your Godfather and ask him about the remedial steps that we need to take for transforming you into a normal being without the thirst for blood and a lovely heart with pure feelings. Both of us will go through any difficulties and hurdles for betterment of your life and your normal existence.”

Alvina vowed, “I swear to God, I will turn Baldovino- my brave friend into a soft hearted, guiltless, and an untainted man.”

The next day Alvina and Baldovino started their voyage to meet the Godfather of the vampire clan. It took them an overnight journey to reach the town of the Godfather- Ambrose. The palace of Ambrose seemed to be a divine architectural structure. The palace was huge and magnificent. It was full of servants and housemaids. A big beautiful garden with a fountain in the middle, long wooden doors, white marble floor. The palace was surrounded by a canopy of tall trees. The couple was taken to a hall with seats kept in a circular shape. A set of stairs led to a red colored imperial seat where sat the Godfather- Ambrose.

Baldovino spoke, “Our greetings to the royal Highness.”

Ambrose interrupts, “Firstly Baldovino, tell me what is the need of a human girl in my palace? Have you got food for us?” sarcastically.

Baldovino tried to speak to which Alvina stopped him and addressed Ambrose. Alvina said, “My greetings to His Highness. I am Alvina. Baldovino is very special for me. We met one day…..”

Through this Alvina narrated everything to Ambrose. Ambrose was shocked to hear what Alvina told. He had never seen a human supporting an immortal evil to this extent. He decided to support them and agreed to give them the remedy they required. The remedial steps suggested by Ambrose were- They had to go to the Red Bloom Valley, which was 10000 kms from the city of Ambrose. They needed to find the tallest Mulberry tree in the valley and get the shell of its fruit. The shell of the fruit of the mulberry tree needed to be burnt by a fire yielding dragon. Then they had to stick a tiger nail inside the shell. After getting the shell ready, it needed to be touched to Baldovino’s chest. If they succeed in this whole process, Baldovino could be changed to mortal. Ambrose suggested Alvina and Baldovino to spend a night in his palace and start their journey to the red Bloom Valley the next morning.

The night fell and the sun rose up high and bright. Alvina and Baldovino were all set to start their journey. Ambrose provided them with a magical wand the magical wand possessed powers of taking them to any place that they will think of by touching it with both their hands. Alvina and Baldovino took the magical wand, they touched it with both their hands and thought of the Red Bloom Valley. In mere five seconds, the couple was standing on the beautiful grounds of the Red Bloom Valley. Both of them were mesmerized on seeing the beauty of the place. There was greenery all around, beautiful flowers, butterflies, soft chirping birds and a dense forest in front of their eyes.

Alvina and Baldovino’s task was to enter the forest and find the tallest mulberry tree to get its fruit shell. They held hands, took a deep breath and entered the forest. It took them too long to find the tallest Mulberry tree. To reach there, they had to go through a range of wild animals. They came across beautiful vegetation of the forest. They saw some rare species of birds and animals. The couple bravely overcame all the hurdles that came in their way. They were finally able to find the tallest Mulberry tree. The challenge did not end here. The Mulberry tree was not an ordinary one but it spoke. Yes! It was a speaking Mulberry tree. Alvina and Baldovino talked to the tree.

Alvina and Baldovino asked the tree for its fruit very politely. The tree replied, “You will have to give answer to two of my questions. Then I will provide you with my fruit.” Alvina and Baldovino told the tree that they are ready for the questions.

Mulberry tree’s first question was- “What is the difference between a wise man and a foolish man?”

Alvina and Baldovino went into deep thoughts. They knew that the answer to this question cannot be too simple. Finally they replied: “All humans have equal brains. The brains does not make anyone wise or foolish. Wisdom is defined by actions and not intelligence. People who do well for themselves as well as for others can be considered as real wise. Foolish are those who cannot think good for others and use their brains for unproductive work.”

The mulberry tree did not respond and asked the second question: “What is the best moral system?” Alvina and Baldovino’s answer was something like this.

“We will never truly be able to distinguish between right and wrong actions. The idea that you should treat others as you would like them to treat you is the best moral system. We should work according to our morals and should not worry about the consequences. Just work hard and let life take its own turn.”

On listening both the answers, the mulberry tree was really content and happy. He provided the couple with the mulberry fruit and wished them good luck for the coming challenges. Alvina and Baldovino felt very elated and moved further for the next challenge.

Now their task was to go to a fire emitting dragon and get the shell burnt by it. A very crucial and strenuous task. The couple bounded strength and progressed.

The dragon was to be found near a hot water lake in the middle of the forest of the Red Bloom valley. They found the lake but could not see the dragon. Baldovino whistled unknowingly and the dragon came out from a cave near the lake. The dragon was extremely fierce and angry. It seemed impossible for them to control the dragon and capture its fire boom. The dragon attacked them. Baldovino went forward to their rescue and a furious fight rolled between the two of them. They were clashing bitterly when the dragon suddenly looked into Alvina’s eyes. Magically, the dragon became still. It was hypnotized by the innocence in Alvina’s eyes. It actually got captivated by the chastity and purity that Alvina possessed. It was an entrancing view. The dragon could be controlled by Alvina and they got the fire boom and burnt the mulberry fruit shell with it. Alvina kissed the dragon and the couple left for the next challenge. The dragon wished them good luck for their following voyage.

Now it was the time for the inquest of Baldovino’s physical potential and vigor. The tiger nail was the next thing they had to attain.

They decided to find the grasslands in the Red Bloom Valley where most of the tigers were usually visible. They hid behind a tree near the grassland. After a long wait of three hours, finally a tiger came in their sight. It was their luck that the tiger seemed to be an old and aged tiger. It was easy to fight off an old tiger rather than a young one. Baldovino thought of a strategy and took a weapon in his hand and stepped strongly behind the tiger. His plan was not to kill the tiger but to put the tiger to unconsciousness and take out one of his nail. A fierce battle took place between the tiger and Baldovino. The tiger attacked Baldovino on his chest due to which he started bleeding. The tiger was old yet a bit strong. Baldovino was lying on the ground due to pain. On seeing this, Alvina started praying to her God. Suddenly Baldovino jumped and got up and made a huge kick towards the tiger and sat on the tiger’s back and pierced the weapon into its body due to which the tiger went unconscious. Alvina was so happy to see the whole scene and in excitement she ran to hug Baldovino.

Alvina said, “Baldovino! You are my hero.”

Baldovino said, “And you are my strength, Alvina”

Then they tore apart a nail from the tiger’s claw and stuck it to the burnt shell. Now was the time for which Alvina and Baldovino went through all these hurdles and complications. Time to get the fruit of their intense hard work. The sun was setting and the night was taking its shape. Baldovino took off his shirt and took the shell from Alvina’s hand. He was about to touch his chest with the shell when lightning stuck in the sky. Clouds started making a roaring sound. The atmosphere turned wild and tumultuous. Baldovino touched his chest to the shell. What happened next was heavenly magical and necromantic. Baldovino miraculously flew up in the sky. A divine shining light surrounded him from all sides. His body was sparkling like stars in the sky. It seemed as all the negativity in his body was turning into divine positivity. The scene was spellbound and wonderful. Baldovino gradually descended towards the earth. His eyes attained a light brown color and a mild warmth occupied his body. Baldovino took a pin and cut his finger and blood flew out of it. Baldovino was turned into a mortal.

Alvina and Baldovino were overwhelmed with an ecstatic feeling. Both looked at the sky and thanked their respective Gods and decided to spend the night in the forest and return to their hometown the next day. They reached their hometown the other day and Alvina took Baldovino to her home to make him meet her parents. Her parents were happy that finally their daughter had found what she desired from life. And then, Alvina and Baldovino lived happily ever after.

  • Beseech for service

    Beseech for service

Once lived a poor old lady Meera. She used to worship god without fail each and every day.  Meera resides within a small hut situated in a plane uncultivable land which is  isolated thus she has to walk a long distance even to fetch water for drinking and miscellaneous purpose.

One fine day walking through a thick dense forest in the hot summer season, she was carrying a heavy bundle of dry sticks in her head. She collected those sticks to use as firewood and cook food to feed her bed ridden husband, son and also her grandchildren. Due to the scorching heat of the sun she became so tired and was not able to carry the firewood. Somehow or the other the sticks fell down. Irrespective of her continuous try, she lost her optimistic thought to get those bundle of sticks in her head. Since the sticks were heavy the impuissant old woman was so much disturbed and said “Who will help me to get this bundle on my head?” .So she cried out in a loud voice  “Oh .. God please help this poor soul”.

Suddenly the god of all creations appeared in his own form in front of the disturbed woman and he asked “what do you want dear old lady?”

The old lady replied “God kindly help me to get this bundle on my head”.

The lord proprietor of everything, the powerful of all, the one with all knowledge, all beauty and all renunciation has appeared before her to give benediction, but the lady just asked for that bundle to get on her head.

This is what we are doing .We ask for a bundle in our head. Whenever we visit holy places to worship god we ask for all material pleasures of this world so that we become happy, our family remains happy, we get all wealth and enjoy all material things losing our memory that we are connected with god. This is our innocence or a stare of not knowing that pure devotional service and mercy are the only things in the world that should be asked to the supreme personality of godhead.

If we want something from god we should just blindly beg for an opportunity to serve the supreme. When people are engaged in any kind of devotional service to god they will be blessed by him and thus they will be able to meet all the daily needs.

To be born as a human is an opportunity given by him to show our love and sacrifice towards the almighty. The purpose of our birth should be understood and used wisely. The ultimate aim of all human soul is to serve the almighty lord and seek his blessings .If we are found as a dedicated servant of lord then we can seek his blessings and live happily with all the health and wealth surrounding us. Seek happiness just by serving the lord. Once tasted the joy of serving him enjoy the mercy showered upon you.

  • Money Demonetization!

    Money Demonetization!

Money Demonetization – An epidemic….but failed to defeat humanity……

A much appreciated initiative taken by our P.M. Narendra Modi, has definitely led to several consequences which is being faced by middle class families. The demonetization of 500 & 1000 note has been emerging as a major problem from economical, political and social point of view. I was also the one included in those middle class family who was facing problem but paytm and online payment had helped me to a greater extent.

This was something very serious and sensitive issue which each of us were facing but being a social animal how one could imagine their life without celebration. While everyone was busy and involved in cut throat competition of getting the new notes and many died because of shock at that time I realised that humanity is still alive in this world. This incident was really heart touching that made me realised that whatever may be the situation, good work continues with the good person in the world.

I was very excited today as it was the birthday of my flat-mate. But I was worried too as I was not having enough money to buy the surprise cake for her. Everything was going fine but this pre new year surprise by our P.M. was really horrible.

After office I decided to buy a cake for her. But thanks to my bad luck I was just having only 100 rupee in my purse and also I left late from the office then I had to go with my friend for some urgent work. So, undoubtedly I was getting late to get into the hostel, as our hostel timing was 10.00P.M. Beyond 10 P.M., Chota Chetan doesn’t allow us to get in. Chota Chetan i.e. our hostel uncle.

It was already 9.30 PM, I called a taxi then finally I reached to the area, where my hostel was. I went 2-3 shops for cake but some of them were not accepting card, and another bakery shop was not having enough cake. At this time, I was so irritated and was continuously cursing the decision of our P.M. The time was 9.45 P.M., now I was more worried as I was getting late for my hostel and also I was not getting cake.

Finally I went to the shop, nearest to my hostel. This shop was my last hope but I never visited there before this so I was worried about the quality and variety of cake. I saw few cakes then I selected the black forest cake for her which was looking very delicious from its appearance. Now the twist in the story was waiting. The cake was almost packed to be carried off. I was relieved when I found that the shop owner was accepting the card.

But thanks to my bad luck, the server was down, so the payment through card was unsuccessful. Now I was about to lose my temper as I was already getting late for my hostel and the cake was also important for me, so I could not leave that.

Then suddenly, shop owner asked me to take the cake. So I told him that I don’t have enough cash and my card is not working so how could I take the cake?

His answer was – You can take this cake, you can give me money whenever I will have it. My anger and irritation melted in a second after listening this. But it was not at all justified from my side to take something without actually paying for it. I then asked him to keep any of my atm card or ID Proof as a  guarantee but he refused to take that also.

He finally told me – Beta! Take this. We’re here to serve you. It’s a national crisis which all of us are facing. If you would have money then definitely you would have paid us. I understand your situation. It is important for you to take the cake. So take it and pay us whenever you will have the money.

Finally I agreed to take the cake but I asked him to note down my contact number in the case if I forget to give money. So he replied – Your contact number is not required, I know you’ll come and pay by yourself. He also added if you’ll not find the cake delicious, then don’t pay us the money.

I was so pleased that I decided to give him the last 100 rupee note which I was having with me at that time. I reached hostel then we celebrated my flat-mate’s birthday. We ate the cake and believe me it was the most delicious cake I had ever eaten. I think the humanity and kindness of the shop-owner had added more sweetness to the cake.

This incident made me realised that humanity is still alive. No situation can stop the good deeds on this Earth. May be problems are the phase that we all have to face to prove the presence of good humans and humanity from time to time. And this incident was one of them. After a week I got 500 new note, I went to the shop again and paid him the money and thanked him for the delicious cake. Now I am eagerly waiting for another birthday of my friend so that I can have another delicious cake from that shop.

  • SILENCE OR WORDS

    SILENCE OR WORDS

This Story is about the cliches, the society has towards different carrier paths.

Aanya entered Hp Hewlett showroom .Her Dad accompanied her.

    Dad-“Hp ke laptops dikhana”

The man counting the bundles of note told “Are Sunil dekh Customer ko kya chahyea, main aara hun jara”

    Sunil-“Hello Sir,Education kya hai aapka”

    *Dad remained silent*

Aanya  picked her phone up and started speaking to it without the phone showing any behaviour other than lying on the grim sooted table with it’s pale and ignorable silence.

Dad-“Are koi bhi jo accha ho,aur middle class family ke liye suitable ho.Aur haan 2-3 saal chal sake”

Aanya made the phone lie again on the table.

Sunil-“Education bata dena sa purpose pata chal jayega na”

    *Stoic Silence*

Dad answered with a cacaphony high pitched tone-“Arts”

*there was an exchange of quick glances with a facetious smile between Sunil and his mates*

The number which flashed on Dad’s phone seemed to be from the Law Farm where he used to work .Dad waived to Anya .

Dad-“Suno ,Main 2 minute me aara hun”

Aanya hurriedly picked up her  sound and static phone  which was resilient towards making any sound today –“Shakshi, you know what! The ppt which is to be made by us is done by me.The slides are well prepared by me and I will just come up tomorrow at your house to discuss if we could do some editing to make it more eye-catchy.Ya,ya ,absolutely, the Excel-Sheet is well prepared and even I have done all the assignments on it.Sure, tomorrow I shall come to show it to you.I know these weekly assignments!duhhhh ……It just makes  us so uncathy and uneven with our own “the life”They seem to be gulping all our time.Nevertheless, these are something  which keeps us embarking on the path of Computer wonders and  readily keeping us trimmed with the world.”

Dad re-entered the showroom which had a temperature risen by the the ever boiling issue of Education via Arts.

Aanya stopped blabbering to the unheard voice on her phone.

    Dad-“Haan to ,Sunil!Dikhana jara”

Dad’s voice seemed to have no recognition in the shop.Sunil was busy with another pair of customer whereas other staffs were keeping themselves occupied by their official recognition of the Lunch Time.

After five whole minutes,Dad tried with a berserk voice and gave Aanya a smirk.

Aanya tried to be indifferent to her Dad’s presence. Her eyes glued to her ever resting phone which seemed to be unobedient to her.

Dad-“Sunil,dikha do jara, der ho raha hai mujha”

This time Sunil returned to Dad with a casualness.

Sunil-“Are,huhhh…..dikhana kya hai ,koi bhi le lo.Graphics ka koi kam to hai nai inko.Infact Computer ka vi kya kam hai jyada!Under 15,000 hi ho jayega.2 models hai,koi vi le lo”

Aanya clinched her fists.Chewed her lips.Tightened her shivering socks.Sighed heavily.Lifted her head up in total unrecognition of everything .

*She reached down from where she started*

The glib talk with unheard Sakshi about MS Office could not make her feel pride in studying Hindi Literature in Delhi University.

    *Dad remained silent*

Dad went out without waiting for Aanya to pace her speed with the world who gives total recognition to Engineer’s and Doctor’s and remains ravelled towards anything else.

  • Hate and Love

    Hate and Love

In life, we often come across people we instantly like, people we instantly hate. Human tendency is to create opinions about people. But these opinions often change. This story is about how two young people who instantly take to hate each other fall in love through the delicate moments that situations bring them into. It’s true that hate is the mirror of love and this story tries to bring that into the spectrum of the reader’s mind.

They hated each other since the moment they had met. She was from London and he was from upstate New York. One would think they would get along well. He was from a family of bankers and she was from the league of hoteliers. One would think they would pair up pretty well. But apparently, that wasn’t the case.

They became hardcore rivals since the moment the first question was asked in the mathematics class. Scholars by birth, each of them with their own brooding ego raised their arms to answer it. They gave each other the stern, dark look that steadfast competitors give each other. She arrogantly ignored him while he superciliously pretended he hadn’t noticed her. They both failed pretty badly in their act of pretence because their cheeks were glowing an annoyed shade of red.

‘Yes, Ms. Waters’, the professor said.

Irene stood up to her full height, 5 foot 7 inches, her dark brunette hair falling till her waist, her spectacles sliding down her nose and her ego resting high up on her head. She looked at her peers with a look of triumph on her face and confidently answered the question, giving a bit too many details. Impressed, the professor appreciated her and bided her to sit down. With an identifiable smirk, she settled back into her seat, but not before she had given him the most sarcastic smile she could muster.

Ryan was pretty disappointed that he wasn’t given the chance to illustrate his knowledge but he knew he would have to wait his turn. He just glared at his notebook instead. After a detailed explanation of the topic, the professor left the class. Irene got up from her seat and made her way out of the classroom with the heavy stack of her notebooks, her sack half falling off her hand. Ryan’s eyes followed her, as did most of the class’s. He noticed the entire class staring at her back. Hastily, he picked up his bag and quickly made his way out.

As Ryan walked into the physics laboratory, their third hour for the day, he noticed Irene sitting on the 5th table, with annoyance clearly visible on her face. As his eyes scrolled down the list for the year’s laboratory partners, he perfectly understood the reason for her rage and the same anger boiled up inside him.

Table No. 5: 1. Irene Waters.

    1.     Ryan Winchestor.

He stared at the two names for quite a while before he was able to make himself walk to their appointed table. Plopping down on the seat beside her felt like he was betraying himself. Almost as if he was breaking the promise he made himself. The promise he had made the moment he had seen her-that he would one day show this woman her level, show her that she is nothing. He looked down at the sheet kept on their desk. Thankfully, they didn’t have to work together that day.

They didn’t utter a single word to each other during the entire two hours that they spent in the lab, at the same table. Everyone just concluded that the hatred must be in their genes or that both of them were so incomparably intelligent that either both of them had to become lovers or sworn enemies. Apparently they had mutually chosen the latter. Little did they know what life had in store for them.

As soon as the bell rang, Ryan left Irene with her packing and haughtily banged out of the lab. Irene didn’t even spare him a second glance. She just packed at her pace and left for the locker room without a word to anyone. By that time, the two of them had become an interesting topic for gossips and also the centre for many staring eyes. However, neither of them had time to get involved in those college controversies nor did they care.

Later that day, Irene strolled into the canteen to find that all the tables were taken, except for the one beside the dustbin, which was normally empty. She picked up some fruits and salad and made her way to the lonely table. As she scanned the canteen, she noticed a big group of students from her class sitting at a far table. They all looked away as soon as her eyes met theirs. She just smiled to herself and looked on. The canteen was full of unknown sophomores. Some bored, some overly enthusiastic.

Peeling off the cover, she dug into the salad. That’s when Ryan walked in. He bought himself a sandwich and looked around. He spotted Irene, gave her an annoyed glare and walked straight out. That’s when she could take no more. She dumped her food into the dustbin and busted out of the canteen. She ran into the grounds with the one thing that could calm her anger – As you like it, by Shakespeare.

Dropping down on a rock below a tree, she opened the book to the page where Orlando meets Ganymade and read as tears streamed down her cheeks. She couldn’t understand why everyone hated her so much. A million questions came to her mind. Why did she have to endure everyone’s stares? Why could she not be accepted the way she was? Why couldn’t she be like those popular girls who had hundreds of people swarming around them?

The bell rang in the distance and she hastily picked herself up and ran into the corridor. Quickly splashing some water into her eyes, she walked into the classroom. To her relief, he wasn’t in any of her classes for the rest of the day. When the final bell for the day rang, she strolled back to her car in the parking lot. As she roved her Porsche out of the drive, she saw him speed down the road in his Ferrari.

Ryan broke through the evening traffic, swinging his huge car through the tiny alleys. He was angry, but didn’t know exactly why. After all, Irene didn’t say or do anything that could potentially hurt him. But, he just thought that maybe it was because his mind had accepted that finally he had met his equal – both in intelligence and ego. Still, his heart and brain were continuously at war. His brain commanding him to be her rival, while his heart convincing him that they could be friends.

The days flew by and the hatred and anger just seemed to grow along with time. Two people, from different countries, from different family backgrounds, but with similar ego and identical intellect, had grown from being strangers to being worst adversaries. They couldn’t stand each other at all. The time they had to put up with each other during the laboratory periods was the most dreaded time for both of them. They hardly talked and pretended that neither of them noticed the other.

However, it is said that genuine hatred makes one spare so much time thinking about the hated that they become an integral part of their life and are missed when they suddenly disappear. And that is exactly what happened between Ryan and Irene. The vacations dawned on them and the college was closed for two long months. Irene went back to London to her family to spend time with her beloved while Ryan went to France with his parents. Irene’s father decided that she needed some refreshment and so they flew to Paris to attend a ball they had been invited to.

On the day of the ball, wearing the most amazing blue evening gown, her hair braided up, Irene walked into the ballroom looking like a princess. Admiring eyes stalked her every move as she accompanied her father while he introduced her to various dignitaries and guests present. Everyone seemed to know and respect her father and they all adored her. But, she got bored pretty fast.

‘And this, Irene, is the world’s leading bank’s director, Mr. Winchestor,’ her father said.

The name rang in her ears and her head shot up. She looked at the man – 6 foot tall, with dark black hair, all suited up with an appropriate dinner jacket and sparkling black shoes. Ryan was a carbon copy of his father, except for his blue eyes – which must be inherited from his mother, she supposed. And she was right, because right beside Mr. Winchestor stood Mrs. Winchestor wearing a beautiful green gown and an antic hat.

‘Hello Mr. Winchestor,’ she said. She was surprised that she rather liked the two of them. They were all sweet and polite. A complete opposite of their son, she decided. But, then she gave it a second thought. Was Ryan that bad after all? He had never said anything bad to or about her nor had he ever insulted her. She wondered why she hated him so much. Or did she hate him at all. Maybe it was just envy. Maybe, her mind had accepted that she had met her equal.

‘I would love to have dinner with you today, John,’ Mr. Winchestor was saying, ‘We have to discuss the implications of our new venture on both our firms.’

‘Yes, I understand Brian. But, I have promised my daughter all my time on this vacation. So, only if she doesn’t mind, my family will happily accompany you,’ her father said.

    ‘I don’t mind’ Irene spoke.

‘Very well then,’ said her father, looking rather surprised. ‘How about meeting at The Ritz at 8?’

    ‘Suits us’ said Mr. Winchestor.

The evening wore on as the music went from slow to fast and then slow again. Irene was asked to dance by countless bachelors but she simply wasn’t in the mood for a dance. She settled at a counter and ordered a coke. Her parents were lost in the crowd. As she drank the coke, she glanced around. She was shocked that she knew nobody. However, everyone seemed to know who she was. Because just as she turned to order another coke, a voice behind her called.

‘Ms. Waters, would you care to join your Harvard adversary on the dance floor?’

The voice was unmistakable. Even though Irene hadn’t talked to him much, she could have recognized his voice anywhere on this planet.

She whirled around and came face to face with the speaker and saw her worst fears come true. Ryan Winchestor – her worst enemy was standing right there in his black suit, with a tie and well made-up hair, looking like a handsome gentleman – asking her to dance with him.

She was rendered speechless. She just stared at him wondering what to say. He looked into her eyes and whispered, ‘Don’t worry. We are still enemies,’ he chuckled. ‘This, I’m doing on my dad’s command. And let me add, they are watching us right now; just don’t turn to look.’ Irene laughed on her stupidity that she thought Ryan was really asking her to dance, and on her dad’s childishness. She gave Ryan her hand and they graced the dance floor.

As they twirled and stepped around, Ryan noticed how lean and beautiful Irene was. How her long gown ended just by her ankles, how her heeled shoes made her almost as tall as himself, how her dimples made up for the world’s most prettiest smile and how her brown eyes creased every time she smiled proving the genuinity of that smile. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed all this back in college. But, now that he had, it was hard to hate her.

Irene laughed and smiled all through the dancing. Ryan seemed to be a wonderful dancer. She smiled every time he whirled and lifted her as if she was as light as a feather. She saw a bright smile alighting Ryan’s face every time she smiled. And the most amazing part was that his eyes and dimples showed that he was genuinely happy.

They danced for about half an hour before the music drained out. Laughing and smiling, they made their way down from the dance floor.

‘You’re not so bad on the floor.’ said Ryan, chuckling. ‘Well, you too are not as bad as was expected from my stark enemy.’ Irene smartly replied.

‘Ohh, stark.. I caught my cue, ma’am,’ said Ryan bowing sarcastically. ‘Have a nice evening.’ And he pretended to leave. ‘You too, Mr. Rival.’ Irene said, giggling.

That made Ryan turn around, ‘Ms. Rebel, I actually thought you enjoyed the dance. Even though I asked you just merely because my dad forced me. But, I rather thought I charmed you.’

‘Well, Mr. Rival, I’m very hard to charm and a rather good actor. So, when I noticed our fathers watching us carefully, I had to show that I’m pleased. Otherwise, I’m a pretty tough challenge,’ Irene nonchalantly mocked.

‘Challenge, huh… Challenge accepted Ms. Rebel.’

‘Yeah yeah.. I know I mesmerized the gentleman in you, but Mr. Rival, I’m sorry, there is nothing for you here’ Irene taunted.

Ryan laughed mockingly, ‘Mesmerized? I’m pretty tough to engage Ms. Rebel. Not so easy there.’

The clock had struck 7 and so they parted ways but not before Ryan kissed Irene’s hand just like any British gentleman would do and Irene smiled and told him how much fun she had.

Both of them got late for dinner. When Ryan entered the dining hall, a waiter laid him to the appointed table where his parents were dining with the Waters. He settled in one of the two empty seats and waited. After a short while, a few drinks and chats about the weather, Irene entered into the hall. She caught his eye, the moment she entered. A long dazzling peach gown, sparkling diamond earrings and her hair falling down her back, she walked with a grace that made her seem like a goddess. All eyes in the room seemed to be fixated on her as she made her way to their table.

Ryan pulled the chair for her to sit and whispered as she sat, ‘Mesmerized indeed, Ms. Rebel.’ She smiled and secretly blushed. She looked at him and instantly fell for his charm. He looked like a true gentleman. With a white shirt, black coat and trousers, a dark tie and polished shoes, he was indeed the most handsome man sitting in the dining hall right then. She leaned towards him and whispered, ‘Charmed as well.’

    ‘Challenge won’ he replied smiling.

Through the dinner, the fathers discussed about their firms while the mothers reviewed every other item available on the market. Ryan and Irene talked about college, life, football and their dreams. And their friendship grew stronger and stronger. They realized how much they had missed out on happiness just by being enemies. Both their hearts knew that they had found their equals, that they could not hope to find anyone more suited to themselves than each other.

When the dinner ended, the two of them reluctantly bid their goodbyes but promised to meet the following morning before their respective return flights. That night, before sleeping, both of them accepted to themselves that they had been wrong in their original judgments about each other, having realized the fact that they were indeed similar yet unique. They had never let their hearts rule over their brains, but now, both – their hearts and brains – were screaming the same thing, they were better together than away.

The following morning, as decided, Ryan met Irene at her doorstep and they started walking down the road towards a tiny yet famous cafe for breakfast. They greeted each other a good morning and walked on in a comfortable silence. As they reached the bridge over the river Seine, Ryan turned around to face Irene. He took her hand and looked into her eyes and uttered three simple words which made all the difference.

    ‘I love you.’

Irene just looked into Ryan’s deep blue eyes and wondered in her mind – what took him so long.

‘Ms. Irene Waters, I, Ryan Winchestor have fallen deeply and irrevocably in love with the one woman I truly hated, with the girl who I imagined to be egoistic and rude, with the lady who I thought was utterly over smart. But..’

‘Enough with the exaggeration of my displeasing qualities I think,’ said Irene, smiling.

With a hearty laugh, Ryan continued, ‘But… I came to realize that she was just a mirror of myself, in almost every aspect. I cannot hope to find a more perfect young woman than you. I wish to spend the rest of my life looking into those brown eyes which seem to withhold the deepest secrets and desires which my heart wishes to share.’

Irene looked at him and whispered, ‘I’m not flawless, Ryan Winchestor.’

‘But, you are, Irene. You are.’

And they just stood there, looking into each others’ eyes, and thinking about their past and future. Two people, from different countries, from different family backgrounds, but with similar ego and identical intellect, had grown from being strangers to being worst adversaries and finally to being the most loyal and beautiful lovers.
