  • The Roach man

    The Roach man

True my existence never mattered to anyone. But when one morning I turned into a roach and my family found me missing, it did upset them at all. And in those 24 hours of metamorphosis I lived to change the way I had lived as an uncared part of a regular family.

It was November 25th, when one night I slept under two layers of cozy blankets, to prevent the excessive cold which I was suddenly feeling. All night I was feeling too sleepless. My nose was closed my ears were experiencing buzzing noise and my eyes were apparently more sandy than usual. I woke up from a really bad dream on the morning of 26th, and forgot about the dream within five minutes of waking up. Still, waking up after a bad night’s sleep was not enough for me. A bigger nightmare was my reality when I saw myself in the bathroom mirror.

I checked the mirror twice before finally grossing out. It turned out I was shrunk to half my actual size and somehow 4 pair of legs grew out of me. I realised how my face extended into antennas and also the the wings at my back. They were all part of my body then. When I rubbed the mirror twice and once my eyes, I found out that I was in a situation where my body was terribly changed into a hideous creature which I myself hated so much.

Then my door knocked open and while still in the bathroom I heard my little sister walk in. I was concious that she might see me in that state but no! She came in.. took my t shirt and walked out. For half an hour I thought about how will I show myself to the others. My size further shrank and my new size was just over one meter at that point of time, which made me fear for my life too.

Then again I heard someone coming upstairs. So I started to look something for my defense, just in case someone comes to look for me and finds a big cold blooded beatle in my place, even one misunderstanding would get me killed at these crucial hours. Finally my mind came up with a hopeful solution, I thought I should try speaking. So jokingly I said I am the lord of roaches. To hear my human voice, made me more than relieved to know my speaking abilities were not threatened by this transformation. I spoke the words as fluently as ever. Then I thought I should rehearse to reveal my identity in front of the mirror. Somehow managing to shift a chair in the bathroom I spoke, ” hi! Mom, dad, it’s me rahul.”

Suddenly the door knocked open without a warning, so I burried my pitiful self under layers of blankets as an instant response to the sudden threat. It was my mom and she brought my breakfast thinking I was ill and left without asking anything. Till evening I remained in that very tragic shape. Surfing google to lend me some instant cure. I read Kafka and camus but found no cure. I wanted to go downstairs and see what my family was doing but I remembered I fear them now. But what was more heartbreaking was infact that noone came to see that I am not in the room.

By the end of the day I realised no one was intrested in knowing if I am alright. Every one was just busy doing their daily chores. As If I never existed. It was tough to imagine how my beloved family for whom I have worked head over heels in day and night out of attachment are now a potential threat and does not even care about me. In that empty hours of chaos I introspect and recieved a big lesson of life too that you were born alone and you will be alone in your grave. So I came to conclude that I myself need to remind them of my existence. I lionheartedly flew downstairs and sat on my sister’s fleece jacket. She screemed and ran to mom, shaking me off. Few minutes later mom came with a folded newspaper in her hands all she wanted was to kill me. So I dodged her and had a dip in my father’s hot coffee. It was just like a hot water bath but a little too delicious. So my father was also after me then. I flew to the top of curtains and then slipped under the cramped cracks under the sofa. These were the perks of growing up in the same home as I knew almost every possible hideout. I had option to speak but my motive was to catch everyones attention. Though this was a risky task still I did it to regain my lost position in the family. I regret the moment I allowed my family to take me for granted. So I went out of my hideout and ran to my room.

My sister shouted in her annoying voice, ” mom see the roach is going to Rahul’s room”.

Locating me all of them ran after me again carrying dangerous weapons such as newspapers and brooms. I ran so fast that day that if I had done it while I was human I would have certainly won a gold in the Olympics. Saving my life where my own family was showering brooms on me I finally managed to squeeze my tiny body under the door and enter my room. After my my family came looking inside as well. I hid myself under the bed. While my mother and sister were busy searching for the roach, my father pointed out that I was missing. Now the roach search was over and in the middle of it Rahul search started picking up it’s ground. They looked for me all over the place but I was still missing.

Judging by their disappointed faces, I sneaked out again this time to reveal myself. They were sitting with backs towards me. As I was about to tell them my identity, sudden uneasiness arose in my head it started aching. It became too unbearable that I shouted. All of them tilted their heads to see me. I saw them and then towards me, I was back to my normal self. They asked me where was I gone. And I answered, ” to get some attention”.

  • Love marriage

    Love marriage

His eyes were pink, heart melting, afterall it was the big day for the girl of his dreams as she was getting ready for her wedding the same night. He stood behind the curtains to see her before going away from his memories forever. She saw him too in her mirror, but could not gather enough courage to turn around and make an eye contact to ask him, why he could not stand up for her at the time when she needed him the most…

Both knew in their hearts that life wouldn’t end without each other. Both of them were very sane human beings so none will commit suicide even if they part. But they also knew that it will just be a normal life. Nothing like the fairytale they had always wished for their future. It will be a life, less than than death, a plain ordinary life.

Sitting on a beautiful chair, the bride to be continued to adore her hair, her hands, her lips, one by one and her lover maintained his distant glance at her all this while. She wore a beautiful red lehnga and a gorgeous cream dupatta. Added the darkest shade of black kajal to compliment her big brown eyes. Seductive red lipstick and and golden highlights completed her bridal look.

Just after finishing her makeup she looked into the mirror, but before herself she looked at Armaan looking at her with mouth wide open. So she didn’t bother to look at herself. She judged her look by her lovers reaction. Both were equally burning in an inextinguishable flame of silent remorse. For her the regret was choosing the wrong man and for him it perhaps was to let her go like this. But nothing could be done now, when things have gone too far. She rose up from her chair and proceeded to the wedding escorted by all her family and friends.

She dressed herself like a femme fatale not for her husband but for her lover. Not to get anyone’s attention but to kill those eyes who were attending her all this while. She was successful in her mission and not finding him anywhere again knew he couldn’t bear it any longer. Now happy at her victory and tortured by his memories she sat against the pit of fire and gave her seven promises to the new man in her life. He too must be having some charm, but she wasn’t prepared to acknowledge that. Her mind was still running behind a coward, who left her months back. Her thoughts were still painted by his colours. She was falling weak on her knees also aware of the fact that since she had decided to move on so there was no going back available to her any longer. At the end fate has had her way and again defeated the goddess of love by making the two lovers unhappy.

It was saddest moment for this girl, whereas people often quoted it to be the happiest moment of a bride’s life. At this moment two lovers parted for good. At the same moment a thousand memories burned with the holy flame. And this very moment an innocent girl’s heart shattered like numbered broken pieces of a glass. How could she not cry at the painful hour of dying dreams?

She wanted to cry, but her makeup was much costlier than her feelings for a lost relationship. She hid her sorrow behind her beautiful smile. She didn’t wanted to waste a single second of her life for a person who has given her up to perhaps a far better stranger. Yes! She got happily engaged that day to a person who will be there for her but the only irony will be that she will suffer the same fate which many forlorn lovers suffer when it’s all over.

Then something crossed her mind, and she came to realise her surroundings. The bubble of imagination surrounding her head finally blasted and she as if out of a nightmare lifted herself up. She knew past is gone and future is unseen. So the only option left was to enjoy the moment. Afterall it was her wedding. That day she laughed a lot, half to cover up her sadness and partly to let her spirit know she owns herself. Her husband watched her happy face from behind his sehra and smiled to see the real beauty of his future wife.

The ceremonies for the night ended cheerfully without any snag. And it was time for the bride to leave her parent’s home to start a new life. With a smile on her adorable little face she sat inside the car with her husband. He off her a handkerchief to wipe her tears off her face. As she held it in her hands she was taken aback by shock. She rubbed her eyes and looked again at the piece of cloth to check if her vision is not decieving her but it was not. Sameera turned her face towards her husband and what she saw then was the epitome of dream come true. The man she was sitting with in the car, the man she married the previous night, the man who was staring her while she was dressing herself was none other than her long time lover Arman.

It took her almost five more minutes to believe that she has really married the prince charming of her dreams. Out of pure joy she cried wrapping her lover in a warm embrace. She thought they have lost each other forever but goddess of love won again by playing her tricks brilliantly.

There they renewed those seven promises on the back seat of their car as per their memory. And promised each other to never let go, no matter how difficult the situations are. This is we say love always finds a way. And this should be the way of the world if we want to live happily ever after.

  • Family reunited

    Family reunited

He turned down the window sill hopelessly missing his family. The same family who,  he was told by many,  have abandoned him on the gates of a remote orphanage. Nobody knows the reason , or who they were but Somil was determined to quest for it. For him it doesn’t matter, why they did it?  He doesn’t even expect them to accept him again but he really wanted to know the Why associated to his own  existence.

He had a new family and now.  Mr. and Mrs. Gill took Somil in their loving abode just an year ago, because he had a certain resemblance to Mrs.  Gill. They too had a tragic story to tell. Having lost their own child during world war 2 in another country, by providing for a war victim they wanted to make up to their first child somehow, they decided to not have another child. So luckily Somil got a new family who care for him just like their own son. He often felt bad for Mrs. Gill’s loss and curses how his own mother was too heartless to abandon an infant on road.

Somil willingly works in his new dad’s factory from nine to five just like the other ordinary workers. Everyday at seven o’clock he would free himself from the days work and goes up into his attic and study his gathered clues. His new mom is affectionate enough to send him dinner climbing the frail attick stairs each day. This was all to sum up Somil’s life from an out siders perspective.

One day Somil was in his study when his mom climbed up, but instead of just fulfilling her duty to deliver dinner to her beloved son, she took a side stool and curiously enquired, ” so where has your search reached. He didn’t bother to shut the windows when he was alone but he got up to shut the window for the old lady. Then he responded to his new mother,” it’s going quite good, I have interviewed a few people over phone and I am getting a lot of information to work upon.”

Mrs. Gill smile at the innocent child’s hardwork. She cheered him up with a pat on his shoulder and decided to let the child finish his work without distraction from her side. Somil too continued working and dialed a number on his phone. Somil had put the phone on speaker and Mrs. Gill got up to leave Somil alone again. But she had taken only two steps when a familiar voice responded the phone call, which made her slow down.

Somil greeted the lady on the phone call saying, ” Hello Mrs. Ghosh, I am Somil, my orphanage provided me with your number claiming you brought me to the orphanage.”

Mrs. Ghosh said in a slighly tout voice, ” but I am not your mother child, I clearly conveyed this to the orphanage manager as well, years ago…. ”

Mrs. Gill heard the whole conversation. Somil painfully smiled at his new mother but failed to notice that she was already in tears. After he cut the call downhearted because he was hopeful that this was the last loop to know about his real family. He finally saw Mrs. Gill’s blue wet eyes.

He rose up nervously from his chair and asked in desperation, mother, why are you crying? What happened? ”

Mrs. Gill tried holding her sorrow of 5 long years of separation inside her, but how could this be possible when she had finally met her lost son. By then Mr. Gill also reached the attick realizing his wife has not been back in the kitchen for so long. Then with happy tears Mr. And Mrs Gill announced that their adopted son is actually their real child, who they think died during the world war.

She narrated the full story thus,” when I heard Somil talking to Mrs. Ghosh on his phone, I was struck by the familiarity of this lady’s voice. I recalled her to be our our landlady and also that she wanted us to pay a month’s rent before leaving the country. But war broke out so instantly that we had to packup in emergency situations. During the journey she must have stolen somil for the sake of her revenge. And as we reported the incident to the local police, she must have made up the entire story of finding you on the orphange gate.”

This was it, Somil’s only family filed an FIR against Mrs. Ghosh and she was soon taken in custody. Somil too realized that his parents were such nice to him as an adopted son so keeping any grudges any long would be stupid enough. The heavy burden of losing their first and only child years back was lightened by this joyous reunion. And in the end they all lived happily ever after just like it happens in the fairy tales.

  • Man of hights: Selfie death

    Man of hights: Selfie death

Wuu jenson was a selfmade man. From riches to streets and then from streets to castle he made his journey quite smooth at a very young age. He was an achiever and an inspiration before his death. He had lots of big titles to his credit but most importantly a selfie king as the world remembers him now.

Wuu belonged to an upper middle class family. He married Lucy for love and lost his family in the process. His mother still loved him but his father had cut all his contacts to the newly married couple. Mother use to send him money for his education and sustainance as he married too young. But she died too soon and left wuu to surronded by misery.

Wuu jenson was penniless and had a family to feed by the time he was just 21 years of age. He did a great deal of hard work to make his name as a renowned acrobatic champion and recieved much praise. But, all this was not enough to feed his family and obviously for the luxurious life which wuu always wanted for both of them.

One day he was practicing yoga early in the morning when an seemingly brilliant struck his senses and it changed the entire flow of his life. What happened was, he use to watch youtube channel for learning some new meditation form about which he recently heard from his wife. That day while watching a vedio, he realized he can also start his own youtube channel and show the world the skill he had learned in acrobatics. He was also hoping, that his channel would also assure a good flow of income for him. He was good in his sport but not too cool to catch the eyes of the crowd in general, compared to the already established youtube channels, who were the best. But he was too impatient and in need of immidiate gains.

His channel was established during 2000 and till 2002 november it scarcely survived gathering 700 followers. He was looking for something different to snatch thousands of viewers for his vedios. On the birthday while of one of his old friend Wuu visited him after a very long time. They climed at the rooftop of his twenty eight story apartment and he started showing them his new acrobatic skills. In the middle of this he did some moves standing on the corner of the side wall. It was risky and he was filmed by his friends over their.

Selfie fever was catching up those days and both the friends took a risky selfy right there. And posted that on internet. This vedio of wuu, went viral within an hour and as expected thousands of people followed him and appreciated his skills.

After that day. This journey never stopped. Wuu use to take risky selfies and post them on his channel and in not much time he was a youtube celebrity with lots of monetary gains. His financial status changed drastically and his confidence in himself too levelled up.

For few more years he kept posting vedios of him taking challenges. He would not use any form of safety while performing and started posting his pictures from the recorded hights at the most unsafe places. People would not stop asking him to have mercy on his life and he would not stop having the frenzied lust of adventure and money.

From Tokyo sky tree to Burj khalifa he was ready to take a selfie challenge anytime and any how. It seemed he did not fear hights instead hights feared him that what will he conquer next. He was always ready to be dared.

He was just twenty six, when the famous rooftopper was filming a 100,000 yuan selfie dare from a famous entertainment agency. The building he was on was 62 storey slippery glass building in China. He was not nervous a bit, atleast it never showed on his face untill the first warning sign. The live streaming stated filming him going to the top of a huge building top with his selfie stick. He hung himself at the side of the roof with out any protection rope or other safety equipments, as part of his challenge. His family watched at a distance with their heart in their mouth. Local media had already recounted the extensive risk involved, multiple times, but he did not listen to them at all. Then as he was preparing to take the selfie, he must have realised the risk and did not took the selfie stick in his hand for a while. He tried to tighten his hold with his firm palms while hanging, his hands were constantly slipping and he was loosing balance. Then he pushed hard and tried to lift himself. May be at that point he wanted help but the bid was to great to lose. So he just did one last effort with his feet but his shoes slipped on the glass building. He lost all his strength in the process he looked at his hands while placing his foot back at the glass wall he lost it once and forever.

His father watching tv. broke into tears with sheer regret. He too realised how much he loved him. At that moment he was ready to die in wuu’s place. His wife was in shock at how bad the events turned out. She had always trusted his capabilities but it was unexpected for her to see her husband losing on to the challenge and losing his life as well.

It was a tragic end of a hero. He was recorded falling off the building. No one knew his fate. No other vedio featured for a month. Then his wife confirmed his death. No doubt he left a big amount behind him but his precious life was lost his fame too was gone. Only his mistake was left behind as a lesson for others.

This was how the selfie king died, under his own deception of being the king of hights.

  • Pizza wars

    Pizza wars

There were literally one million people eating pizza that minute all over the globe, but I am more than a 100 percent sure, no one ate pizza like I did with jacob on that wonderful day.

Hi! I am Sandra Gilbert, a new high school kid and an intern at a local content writing office. I was always a spoon fed, naive and obedient person, which clearly defines my relationship status, if you are a clever reader. I had no girl friends either, reason being, girls back in my college days were big time snobs in my opinion.

Then right in the middle of my collage I found my Mr. Perfect. We shared so many things in common that I could never sit and count them completely in one go. He and I met in a dominos restraunt. I still love to remember that day over and over again.

I was so damn hungry that I would eat the whole table but having mercy on my digestive system I decided to order pizza only. The staff boy came within seconds to me because there were just one or two more people seated in the restaurant that day. My order was simply any veg pizza. He note that down in calligraphy, may be to stay occupied on a non busy day.

Then arrived Jack Spinslaw, the most famous student of my grade, on the counter. He had a reputation of not indulging with girls. I wasn’t attracted to him at all, but somehow I found it interesting to watch him talking to the staff person on the counter. Strangely the staff boy pointed at me, and seemingly aggitated Jack too gave me a scary look. But this does not mean that I was afraid, I was just concious. I wanted to know his mind, though I ignored his attentions for that moment.

He started walking towards me. Stopping right next to my table he then asked me with a smile,” hi! Can I have the pleasure of having your company?”

I just wanted to shout out loud to him that, what does he actually wants from me. But those words remained stuck at the back of my tongue, all thanks to my polite upbringing. I replied, ” sure, I remember we are in the same school. ” he completed it saying,” and same grade”. And I further added, ” and we share same bus for home as well”.

Then in a buttering manner he said,” by the way, I am flattered to know that the most beautiful girl of my school notices me”.

I unexpectedly blushed feeling butterflies in my belly. Then started talking about each other and our families, it seemed like our talk will never end. We both were so comfortable with each other, I couldn’t have ever imagined that an introvert girl like me could pull a talk so much with out any external help. He was also surprised, as he told me the same thing about himself. But it was just the beginning we talked so much and didn’t found single thing which was uncommon about us apart from our genders. Apparently we were new best friends, and I was cherishing the fact that my best friend is so hot and famous.

Then after 25 minutes of long waiting time, my pizza was ready. My name was called at the counter, so I got up to recieve the order. But Jack insisted to bring my order which I allowed with a bit of a struggle.

When pizza reached my table I was about to drool. It’s aroma was the most desirable smell of the day. It was a beautiful extra cheese pizza with olive toppings which was one of my favorites. It looked as delicious as the chocolate fountain looked in the Charlie’s Chocolate Factory. I was looking at the pizza just like a lover lookes at his beloved on the romantic moon lit nights.

Then I remembered I just made a new friend and as he is sharing my table, so it would be impolight if I do not ask him for the pizza. At the back of my head, there was this conflict going on, if I should eat the pizza alone or offer him to share. In the end my manners won over my greed. I asked him out of courtesy, “would you like to share… ?” but before I could complete my sentence, he already picked a giant slice and said ‘thankyou’ .

Then I took one slice too. As I took 2 bites, he finished his slice and reached for the next slice. I wached that with a heavy heart. I rushed to finish my slice and took my next slice. But he picked a third by then. I hurriedly finished my own slice while in my head I was killing my new found friend with a sharp knife. I was so unhappy that he was about to eat that slice that I didn’t notice when I spilled a glass of water on the table. Table was possibly somewhat slant so water fell on his jeans and It almost looked like he peed his pants.

He quickly stood up, but in that hurry he dropped his slice of pizza. I was felt sorry both for this pants and the pizza. And I felt like only way I could repay him is by offering him the last slice.

He too laughed it off and assured me that he has taken it very lightly. Then we focused our attention to the last slice. He wanted me to have it. And I wanted him to have the privilege.

We were feeling a bond between us in those precious moments. We almost started harbouring feelings for each other which we both admitted. Then he confessed that when he first arrived at my table, it was just to share the pizza because that was the last pizza for the day. I felt somewhat offended but admitted, I didn’t wanted him to have the pizza because I was feeling so hungry.

After one minute of silence he started taunting me and blamed that I threw water deliberately on him. That was the point where I lost my politeness and decided to finish the pizza myself. But he stoped my hand in a very ungentlemanly manner. Then we started fighting over how dare he hold my hand like that. And the fight went on and on with a new topic of arguments every thirty seconds.

It is funny to recall but at that moment our hands were on the cond damp slice and we were arguing like childhood besties. In unexpected turn of events, neither of us wanted to argue yet wanted to find a way to talk and not let the conversation die. Afterall we were just fighting over the last slice of pizza which was not even the topic of fight. But it brought us closer. And we found love over that pizza war.

  • Movie Review: Hirune Hime:Shiranai Watashi no Monogatari (Napping Princess: The Story of the Unknown Me)

Movie Review: Hirune Hime:Shiranai Watashi no Monogatari (Napping Princess: The Story of the Unknown Me)

Dreams and reality often are separated by a thin line. This movie explores the idea of fading that line and dives into a wonderful world where you are lost in the true meaning that defines reality. The story begins with the start of preparations for Tokyo Olympics 2020. With the dream sequence of the main character placed just right into the frame. With that being said, let us go right into the in depth analysis or category by category review of the movie.

Disclaimer: May contain some spoilers. The review is a personal opinion.

Art: A rating of 8.5 out of 10 does justice to the art of the movie. The movie looks spectacular, with great visuals and eye catching effects. The artwork, especially the designs of particular gadgets looks incredible. The intricate detailing in the designs of machines just puts another cherry on the top of this movie. The machines were designed very similar to the counterparts found in the real world. The typical artwork found in Japanese animations is seen all over the movie after all it is an anime movie. The detailing in each scene just makes us appreciate the animators a lot. They did a great job in the modelling and animating the gadgets and of course humans.

Story: Rating 9 out of 10. At first when you read the summary of the movie you will realise that it is just like any other children’s tale but after watching the movie it feels like it can be enjoyed by all ages. The story even if it seems a little childish, gives a very good outlook on life and makes us question what should we trust. The story begins with our main protagonist Kokone dreaming about a place called Heartland where everyone has to live by the King’s orders, your typical kingdom. But this king was obsessed with cars and the kingdom mass produced the cars. There are scenes which makes us hate the monarchy of the king. In this dream the main protagonist dreams herself as Ancien who is the daughter of the king making her the princess of Heartland. She has a magic tablet which can do wonders. Because of her powers a monster named _Colossal___ attacks the kingdom of Heartland. In order to keep the reason for the attack a secret, the princess is never allowed to leave her castle. This is all just the beginning of a great story. Up ahead, Kokone will find her old friend who will help her in her journey. The conspiracy behind her dad is solved by his daughter through this amazing adventure. The twist in the story is well placed but it was kind of obvious, yet still catches you off guard. The ending was heart warming and leaves you with good vibes.

Character: A rating of 7.5 out of 10 is pretty fair. There is so much potential with the characters. The main character who knew very little about her mother finally realising the truth by the end of the movie, the dad who saves her daughter from the danger, the grandfather who realises his granddaughter at the right moment and finally the most amazing was the dream of her mother caressing the daughter. These characters are to some extent very relatable. The dad’s character development after the twist was amazing as well. The seemingly inanimate gadgets showing a great deal of help really gives you a warm feeling.

Soundtrack: I will give a rating of 7 out of 10 for the soundtrack. The movie did not have a very catchy soundtrack that will make it stand out from the rest. But the soundtrack is pretty decent and goes well with the story.

Overall: I will give a rating of 8 out of 10 overall. It was a pretty enjoyable movie, with some morals to be learned in the end. The journey with the characters leaves you thinking what if your dreams come true? And how can you leave an imprint of yourself after your death like of the characters? It gives a sense of hope for the future and leaves you thinking about the new technologies that have been rising in the world now.

  • Dorset. Dover. Dartmouth.      DUNKIRK.

    Dorset. Dover. Dartmouth.      DUNKIRK.

“We can practically see home from here”.

“Seeing the home and going there isn’t the same.”

Christopher Nolan’s war epic ‘Dunkirk’ tells the story of a somewhat same situation. In the May-June of 1940, when the Gargantuan Nations have started battling against each other, 400,000 soldiers of the Allied Forces find themselves cornered in the Dunkirk beach of France. They can see home but it has become impossible for them to go back.

‘Dunkirk’ tells the story from three different perspectives- land (The Mole) for a week, the sea for a day and air for an hour in a nonlinear narrative. The history of human evolution has always been marked by wars and epic battles for territorial superiority. While most ‘War movies show the mainstream facet of the war, Nolan wanted to tell the story of the other side- the one about survival. There are very few conversations in the movie, let alone be any catchy dialogues but the fear could be seen on every soldier’s face- the fear of dying on an alien beach, surrounded by the enemy while the home is so near.

From the first sequence till the last, the background score kept intensifying and keeps the viewers literally at the edge of their seat. Hans Zimmer, the guy who has pulled strings for some of Nolan’s other works has surpassed his own works in a manner of speaking. And a movie with such impeccable music is only to get better.

The cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema has done some astounding work. The battle of aircraft to the landing of it against the backdrop of the sunset while having Churchill’s famous speech, it all takes your breath away.

Actors Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy were all impressive and since the movie didn’t devote to any singular protagonist, it’s only fair that all of them should be praised. Harry Styles surprised for being so much of an actor in his debut film and deserves all the applauds his way.

In a far-fetched conviction, one is to assume that Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk draws an inspiration from ‘The Guns of Navarone’ or the popular ‘Saving Private Ryan’. But it is not. It is not the story of rescuing one man or a group of people. Here cometh the major question- why isn’t there a protagonist? Where is a proper story? Who is the actual hero? For those who seek answer- In a war, each and everyone who gives his blood and sweat is a hero. And for the cinephiles- Not every movie needs a generic spread out story with a singled out ‘hero’. Dunkirk is one such movie. Even being an out and out fan of Christopher Nolan and having watched his movies countless times from an early age, I had always considered him a filmmaker for a certain section of people. While movies like ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar’ do rattle one’s mind every time he/she watches it, it isn’t for every kind of audience. ‘Dunkirk’ is one such movie where every layman could understand the perils of those 400,000 soldiers, sitting in a dark theater with every breath he/she draws and clearly marks his way as an auteur of our generation.

For people harping about Nolan’s marketing strategy, I have only one thing to say- a filmmaker venturing out to create Independent films while tasting commercial success is a rare achievement and inspires the upcoming generation of filmmakers.

  • Charlie Chaplin

    Charlie Chaplin

A day without laughter is a day wasted

Born on 16 April, 1889 in Walworth, South London as Charles Spencer Chaplin was not just a great comedian but a great person also. Charlie parents were estranged by around 1891 so he lived with his mother and brother in the district of Kennington. As his mother had no permanent source of income other than the occasional dressmaking and nursing that she did, so they were always living in the poverty and adversity. Charlie was then sent to a workhouse at the early age of seven as his mother was no more able to look after him.

We think too much and feel too little.

Charlie and his brother were sent to Norwood School in 1898, which was an institution for poor children. Charlie’s mother condition deteriorated as a result of developing a psychosis and then she was sent to Cane Hill mental asylum. She was in and out the mental asylum till her death in 1928. Charlie and his brother went to their father to live for some time. But he had became a severe alcoholic and then died two years later. In due course of time his brother joined the Navy whereas Charlie straggled the streets in search of food and a place to sleep.

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.

Charlie joined the Eight Lancashire Lads clog-dancing troupe and toured English music halls for two years. Although he was appreciated for his dancing style but he himself was beginning to show interest in performing comedy acts. He came into the world of theatre at the age of 14. He played a number of roles and was appreciated for it. Then one day, there came the first call of destiny for this young boy. Charlie act in the play ‘Sherlock Holmes’ was so publicly appreciated that he was selected to play the role in three nationwide tours. Charlie stayed with this play for two and half years till he was 18.

By the time Charlie’s brother had decided to make a career in acting and had become a star in a prestigious comedy company. He also managed to secure a role for Charlie in the play. Although Charlie started himself with smaller roles in the play but he went on to star lead roles by 1909.

Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles.

In April 1910, his lead role in ‘Jimmy the Fearless’ was highly appreciated and he got a lots of attention from the public as well as from the press. Then he started off by joining a touring troupe for two years. He was highly appraised by the viewers and this increased his popularity in North America.

Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself.

In 1914 Charlie was called up to act in a motion picture and he made his debut with the movie ‘Making a Living’. Although the Charlie did not like comedy used in the films but he hoped it would be a platform for more good chances to come in future. Then he was soon seen in his legendary character of ‘The Tramp’ in the movie ‘Kid Auto Races at Venice’. Charlie adopted the character of the tramp in all his next movies. But soon he was engaged into a disagreement with the director and was reached on the verge of being fired.

I remain just one thing, and one thing only — and that is a clown. It places me on a far higher plane than any politician.

But because Charlie was in demand that time he was given a chance to direct a movie with an assurance of $1500 in case it failed. But his movie ‘Caught in the Rain’ which was directed by himself became a big success. Gradually Charlie’s fan count was increasing and the comedy he did was becoming popular among the audience.

A man's true character comes out when he's drunk.

Charlie joined Essanay studio for $1,250 per week in late 1914. Here he released his movies, ‘A Night Out’, ‘The Champion’ and the best of them was ‘The Tramp’ (1915). At that time his popularity touched the sky. There was merchandise and comic strips of his characters sold in many shops and he became a cultural icon in America. When he renewed his contract, he became one of the highest paid artists in the world when he agreed to work with Mutual Studios for an astonishing $670,000 per year.

“To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!" – Charlie Chaplin

Charlie success continued with films like ‘The Kid’, ‘The Gold Rush’, ‘City Lights’, ‘Modern Times’ and ‘The Great Dictator’. The character played by him was liked by the people and appreciated all over the world. His movies ran to packed audiences in more than 50 countries. Although Charlie came under many controversies later career regarding his personal life but his impression will remain forever and cannot be replaced in the next 100 years of world cinema. Charlie was a global icon who has the ability to relate with the common man and make anyone from a child to an old aged person laugh from the bottom of the heart at his various actions.

  • Quentin Tarantino : Another Name of Violence

Quentin Tarantino : Another Name of Violence

Violence is one of the most fun things to watch.

    – Quentin Jerome Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino was born on March 27th, 1963, in the city of Knoxville, Tennessee. His upbringing was relatively simple and straightforward. He was born to a musician father and a strong, independent mother. He had to quickly relocate himself to California after his parents separated early in his life.

From the age of two onwards, he spent his early life in the suburbs of Los Angeles.

He was greatly fascinated by cinema at an early age, so he dropped out of high school at age fifteen to make an acting career. He started taking classes during daytime and watching classic movies by night. While he was struggling to survive, he got his first job as an employee at the Video Archives rental store near his home. It resulted in one of the most creative film consumption periods of any person working in Hollywood today.

During his career at the Video Archives, Tarantino watched thousands of films and built a immense knowledge of cinema and also formed his creative yet homage-filled style at the same time. From western flicks and historical movies to kung fu, Tarantino's knowledge of cinema became an important aspect of his style, influencing stories and designs in his future creations.

Tarantino meet his future collaborator Lawrence Bender at a party and after it he started writing his first screenplay.

His first immediate success was The mega-violent and street-smart Reservoir Dogs and it’s also bringing in over ten times his modest budget. This film was financed by an actor Harvey Keitel, who would then become one of the most valued recurring cast members of Tarantino.

When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, 'no, I went to films.'

    – Quentin Jerome Tarantino

Although Reservoir Dogs received the critical acclaim, but Tarantino wanted more and he set out to make a movie that would clearly define him as a director. After two years, his second film, Pulp Fiction, was released to universal acclaim. The film was a huge financial success and established Tarantino as a new Hollywood filmmaker that combined style with meaningful story.

After it many film hit but no one like the Pulp Fiction.

A partnership with cult favourite director Robert Rodriguez resulted in From Dusk Till Dawn, a bizarre vampire movie that wasn't a hit amongst critics. Soon Tarantino received critical acclaim once again for his first non-original script, the hit blaxploitation homage Jackie Brown, which reignited the career of former star Pam Grier.

From a struggler to on top of the world, Tarantino spent the more recent years of his career on the film projects that he was most interested in. He made a two part series based on the character of 'The Bride', a revenge-seeking bride which he invented with Uma Thurman while directing Pulp Fiction.

Later he created what be the world’s best revenge film, the hilarious and somewhat disturbing Inglourious Basterds, a bizarre take on World War II.

He also spent his time to helping international directors gain exposure in the United States, using his name and reputation to release a range of independent releases in major cinema chains.

With a career that's produced both critical acclaim and commercial success, Quentin Tarantino is a rare ambassador of both artistic integrity and bankable skills in the film industry.

An ambitious self-educator, his success isn't the result of advanced training or an extensive education, but a desire and motivation to succeed that pushed him past his peers.
