  • The Dove and the Hunter

    The Dove and the Hunter

Once there lived a hunter he was very mean person. He moved here and there in the jungle in search of birds and other small creatures. He was a very cruel man and looks like a Yama, the God of death. He was a very heartless person so all his friends and relatives abandoned him for his cruel behaviour.

In the same jungle there lived a pair of doves. They have prepared a beautiful nest in the top of a big banyan tree and they lived there happily.

One day the hunter reached the same tree and finding the female dove alone he caught hold her. He immediately trapped the female dove into a cage and then began looking for some more hunting. Suddenly a strong storm started which is followed by heavy rains. The hunter terrified by all this sudden changes and started searching for shelter to save him. He moved here and there but he could not find any shelter. After some time he found a big tree, as he was shivering in rain and cold, he immediately took shelter under the tree. This the same tree where the female dove he had caught lived.

After some time, the rain started to stop and the storm also ceased. The sky started to clear. But it was late night, so the hunter decided to spend the night under the tree. He started praying to the tree, “O spirit of the tree, or whoever lives here, I want to take shelter under this tree for tonight. I am drenched completely in the rain and suffer from cold and hunger. I cannot go away to any other place in this situation so please take shelter me here and protect me for the night.”

At the same time, in the nest above, the male dove was very worried about his wife as she had not returned. The storm and heavy rain also increased his worries for her wife. He said, “I am very disappointed and worried for my wife who has not returned home yet. Our home seems empty without her. I am too much worried as the storm was so strong and the wind blow so fiercely, and it is already late in the night. Please God save her.”

The female dove could hear her husband worrying from above the tree and so she called out to him. She said, “Dear, I am being held by the hunter who has taken shelter under the same tree. He trapped me in a cage finding me alone. I want to tell you something more that will be for your own good.”

The male dove surprised after listening her wife and he said to her to explain all the matter. The female dove explained, “Dear, The guest is always God. If anyone comes to your house for shelter, one must do his best efforts to him. This hunter came here to take shelter under this tree to protect himself from cold. He is hungry also. Please don’t hate him for his cruel deeds to caged me. Instead, welcome him in our home because he wants shelter for the night under your protection.”

The female dove continued explaining, “My dear husband, this is not the fault of the hunter that he caged me. But surely it’s all the result of my past deeds. Misfortunes like poverty, disease, detention and even disaster come to someone’s life as a result of his own deeds. So please don’t hate him and welcome him according to our culture and tradition.”

After hearing the words of her wife the male dove touched by her virtuous guidance. He immediately flew down and reached the hunter. He said to him, “O my friend, Welcome to our tree. Please don't worry about anything as you will be safe here. Stay in this place as long as you want. Tell me how I can help you.”

The hunter impressed by the dove and became happy to have a friend. He said to the dove, “Dear dove, Thank you very much for such warm welcome but please do something to help me from this dreadful cold.”

Immediately the dove flew to far place and returned with a piece of burning coal. Then he climbed up the tree to drop some dry leaves. Within no time the leaves began to burn. He said to the hunter, “Sir, Please warm yourself from this fire and you will be fine soon. I am an unlucky person for not being able to provide food to my guest. As you are my guest and you are very hungry so I offer myself to you. Please accept my sacrifice and make a meal out of me.” And then the dove flew into the fire which killed him.

As the hunter was very hungry and so he could not refuse to accept his offer. But at the same time he was moved by such kindness. His heart was filled with pity and he began to thought, “A man who is cruel always to other persons and done evil actions, he ultimately pays for his misdeeds and evil actions. I am also such a person and certainly go to hell for my misdeeds which I have done for so long. But this dove has righteous example, and taught me a lesson of sacrifice.”

He continued, “Now onwards I will lead a disciplined and well being life. I will leave all my evil actions and promise to sacrifice all my unwanted pleasured of life.” Then within few moments he threw away the cage, which opened the gate of the cage and released the female dove. When the female dove free, she realised that her husband was already dead and was burning in the fire. She immediately began to scream, “What I will do without you. There is no meaning of my life without you. I have lost all interest in life"

And then the female dove flew into the fire and killed herself. After her death, the female dove met her husband in heaven. He was transformed into a heavenly creature, sitting into a chariot in costly ornaments. The female dove realised that she had also assumed a divine form.

After that day the hunter left his life as a hunter and converted into a sage. He passed his days as a sage and one day when he saw a wild fire in a forest, he decided to sacrifice his life to apologise for his past deeds. Thus he paid for his misdeeds and was relieved of his sins. At last he went to heaven with great joy.

  • Frogs that rode a Snake

    Frogs that rode a Snake

Once there lived a snake named Mandavishya nearby a mountain. He was very old due to which he was unable to get his food by preying frogs.
One day he was very hungry and there were no food near him. He began to thought, “Now I became too old to hunt for food and if I did not get any food it became very weak to me. I will not be able to live anymore without food. I have to think some solution for this problem.”
Suddenly an idea struck in his mind. According to the plan he went to the nearby pond, where a number of frogs lived. As he reached there he relaxed near the bank of the pond pretending that he has no intention to hunt. He behaved as he had nothing to do with the frogs.
After seeing him at the bank of the river the frogs started to ran away, but as the snake was not hunting, so they gathered at one place and reached the snake. One of the frogs said to him, “O snake! Why do you not hunting today, though it is your behaviour.”
Then the snake started pretending and replied, “Now I have no desire for food, as I am an unlucky person.” The frog asked the reason for this, and then the snake explained him, “Dear, last night when I was moving here and there in search of food, but I did not get any food, so I bit a Brahmin's son in frustration of not getting any food. Then the Brahmin got angry and cursed me that from now onwards I shall be not able to prey any frog else I have to serve frogs. I live my life what frogs offer me to live. Thus, I am here, to serve any frogs who want my services. I can also give a ride on my back to any frog who want to do so.”
The frogs get surprised and he reached the kings of the frogs. When the king heard this news, he approached the snake along with his ministers. The king asked him that the news was really true. On being assured by the snake that he approached no harm to him, the king decided to take a ride on the snake’s back first. As the king sat on the snake’s back, he rode the king around the pond very carefully, so the king was very entertained. All the ministers even the other frogs also ride on the snake’s back one by one and they were very delighted also.
The snake too done his job carefully and proved himself a good rider by exhibiting many styles of crawling. All the frogs and especially the king of frog were very happy. They jumped and leaped all the way of returning home.
The snake thought himself that he got succeed in his plan. So the next morning he pretended to be very weak and ill and even crawled slowly. On the other hand the king of frogs was very eager to start his morning with a ride on the snake’s back as last day. As he reached the snake he came to know about his health. He asked him about his health, the snake replied, “Sir, I am feeling well today. I am too weak to even crawl. Though I have not eaten anything for many days, so must need some food to eat to get some energy to give a ride to you.”
Then the king thought for a moment, then consulted his ministers and then decided that they must serve the snake with one frog a day to keep him healthy and strong. After heard this the snake was very happy, because that was what he had planned for. The snake praised the king of frog for his kindness and sympathy, and then gave him and other frogs a ride on his back.
From that day the snake gave ride to the frogs everyday and then got a frog to eat. In this way within few days the snake gained much strength and became very healthy. On the other hand, the number of frogs decreasing day by day and the king of frog was very disappointed on realising the frogs were decreasing in numbers and there were only a few remained.
The frog’s snake cannot understand the real motive of the snake behind all this even now.
One day a big black snake approached the bank of the pond. When he saw the excited frogs hopping and jumping in joy and riding on the snake’s back, he got very surprised. Then he asked the snake the reason. He said, “O friend! Why are you carrying frogs on your back? They are our food, then why are you doing so?
Then the old snake explained everything to the black snake. He continued, "I have enjoyed many different tastes by eating many different frogs here. I have getting this easy way of life, and enjoying it here."
As thus time passed away, the snake had started eating even the lager snakes, the king’s ministers and the king's relatives. Finally one day he ate the king also and thus, all the frogs of the pond finished.

  • Of Crows and Owls

    Of Crows and Owls

Once upon a time, a number of birds lived in a jungle. All the birds – the swans, cranes, parrots, cuckoos, owls, peacocks, doves and the others decided to meet. They wanted to discuss upon a most important topic. All the birds gathered but unfortunately no crow had reached yet to join them, but they could not wait any more.
As they collected they discussed, “The Garuda, who is the king of all the birds, is always busy in serving his master. He has neither the time nor interest to concern about us. So there is no point in having such a king, who does not protect his position. He remains at the position of king only for namesake.”
And then they continued discussing, “Let us choose a king amongst us who is perfect for the position of the king.”
Then all the birds started looking at each other. They suggested many birds and at last the characters of owl attracted everybody. They discussed that the owl was powerful, had very impressive characters and most importantly he could even see at night, when we all were most unsafe. So they all agreed that the owl would be perfect king for themselves.
They all agreed and then cried loudly, “From now onwards the owl should be our king! Let us prepare for the crowning at once.”
Thus, as decided for the crowning of the owl, the birds collected water from the holy river, collected 108 holy roots of tree and then prepared a highly beautiful throne. They decorated the whole area beautifully, even spread the ground in front of the throne with tiger skin. They invited many Brahmins which when reached the place started praying and chanting through holy books. They started beating the drums and sang songs of joy. They started dancing in front of throne. All of the atmosphere full of joy and happiness. They prepared the owl for crowning.
At the same moment when the owl was reaching the throne for crowning, a crow arrived there. As he reached he asked unusually, “Please, tell me the reason of this great gathering and this generous celebration. What happening here?”
In reality as the crow was known for his smartness, so the birds decided to explain the reason of this vast gathering to seek his opinion.
They explained the crow, “O dear crow, as our King Garuda has no time to seek our problems, he always busy in serve his master. So we all decided to dethroned him and have elected owl as our new king. So here we gathered for his coronation, please joined us and provide us our opinion also.”
After heard this the crow smiled and replied, “Okay my dears, but in my opinion I would not support the crowning of the owl as our king.”
They all get surprised and asked the reason for the same. The crow explained, “Dear, as we birds are known for their beauty then why such an ugly king, as like owl. Look at him, how he ugly amongst all us. He looks so mean with his crooked nose and peep eyes. Think, how would he look if he was angry? We have the peacocks, swans, nightingales, pigeons and so many more birds who look so beautiful. The owl is blind by the day also then who look after ourselves. I undoubtedly advise you against his crowning.”
The other birds started discussing taking into account his points, and then the crow continued with his arguments, “Think, what we all gain from electing Owl as our king? We already have Garuda as our king. The only point out his name would keep our enemies away! Garuda is our best king as always. It is no need to elect a new king and dethroned the Garuda.”
On heard the crow’s logistic reason the birds started considering, “The crow is right, the reasons which he has given are also rights. So the entire reason of our gathering serve no purpose. Lets as think about the matter again and meet some other time.”
After then, one by one all the birds flew away. The Brahmins also started to leave from there. But the crow still sitting on the branch of a tree. The owl and his wife were not understand the reason of this disturbance, so they were still waiting to be crowned as king and queen.
The owl said to his wife, “What is happening here? Why all the birds left? Why is not the crowning ceremony start up till now?
Then his wife replied, “As I understand, the crow put a blockage in the crowning ceremony. He definitely told all the other birds to do so, thus all the birds left away. We have the motive behind this all. We should return home, too.”
On hearing this all, the owl got very disappointed. He started shouted on the crow, “You are a sinful bird. I never harm you in any way, and yet you put hindrance to my crowning ceremony. From today, I end all friendly relationship with you. From now onwards, we are enemies and nothing else.”
Then the owl left with his wife, to return to his home. The crow was left alone. With everybody else gone, the crow decided to leave too. While he started flying, he thought, “Why did I do all this? My advice to the birds was not necessary. And it is because of my advice that crows will always have the mighty owls as their enemies. It’s all because of me.”

  • The Wedding of the Mouse

    The Wedding of the Mouse

Once there was a beautiful hermitage near the bank of the river Ganga. A number of saints lived in this hermitage peacefully from many years. The saints were disciples of a Guru Yadnyavalkya, who was always remained under meditation. The Guru Yadnyavalkya was a great saint and also followed a strict self discipline.

One day, while he was bathing in the river, a hawk flew over with a mouse in its claws. Suddenly the mouse fell down from its claws directly reached into the hands of Guru Yadnyavalkya. When the Guru noticed that the hawk was still flying above and if he left the mouse alone, the hawk caught the mouse again. So he decided to not left him alone and put the mouse on a leaf of nearby banyan tree. When the hawk fled away the Guru again went to take a second bath to purify himself.

When the Guru returned from bath, he used his powers to transform the female mouse into a beautiful small girl and then took her to the hermitage. When he reached the home, he said to his wife, “My dear, accept this small girl as our blessing of God, as we do not have a child of our own.

The wife agreed and accepted the girl. The girl started growing in the hermitage under the care and observations of the guru and his wife. He gave her knowledge about science and ways of life. Both the Guru and his wife loved her very much and have proud on their special child.

Days passes away and then time reached when the girl reached a marriageable age. One day the Guru’s wife discussed with him about the marriage of their daughter. They decided to give it a serious thought, as she was a special child and so deserved a special husband.

On the very next morning the Guru, using his powers ordered the Sun God to be present before him and then he said, Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.” The Sun God did not say any word but the daughter said, “My Dear Father, although the Sun God lights up the entire world but he is unbearably hot. I cannot accept him as my husband. Please look for a better husband for me.”

The Guru surprised as her daughter’s words and said, “Who might be better than even the Sun God?"  Immediately the sun advised him, “Guruji, you can seek for the King of Clouds. He can cover me and my light, so he superior to me. He is perfect match for your daughter.

The Guru agreed with the Sun God and immediately called the King of Clouds by using his powers, and said, “Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

The daughter immediately said, “Father, the King of Clouds is very dark, wet and too cold. I cannot accept him as my husband. Please look for a better husband for me.”

The Guru get shocked and said, “Who might be better than even the King of Clouds?" then the King of Clouds advised him, “Don’t worry Guruji, you can seek the help of Lord of Winds. He can blow me away so he is superior to me.”

Immediately the Guru, using his powers called the Lord of Winds and requested him, “Please accept my daughter’s hand. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

Suddenly the daughter said, “Father, the Lord of Winds is too fast and never stay at one place, he keeps changing his direction always. I do not wish to marry him. Please look for a better husband for me.”

This time the Guru worried and said, “Who might be better than even the Lord of Winds?” then the Lord of Winds advised him, “Guruji, you can seek the help of the Lord of Mountains. He is tall enough and even superior to me, for he can stop me from blowing."

Then the Guruji immediately, using his powers, called the Lord of Mountains, and said, "Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

This time even the daughter replied, “Father, the Lord of Mountains is too hard and rigid also. He is immovable also, how can I manage with him. I do not wish to marry him. Please seek a better husband for me."

The Guru wondered on her daughter’s excuses and said, "Who might be better than even the Lord of Mountains?" Then the King of Mountains suggested, "Guruji, do not worry, you can seek the help of the King of Mice. He is superior to me, for he can make holes all over me."

So the Guru, using his powers, called the King of Mice, and requested him, "Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.” When the daughter saw the King of Mice, she became very happy and shyly agreed to the marriage.

Then the Guru transformed her daughter to a beautiful female mouse and then married his daughter with the mouse.

  • The Cunning Mediator

    The Cunning Mediator

Once there lived two partridges (quail-like birds) in a certain tree in a jungle. Jungle was very deep and many animals lived there. One of the partridges lived on the branches of the tree while the other lived inside a hole, at the foot of the tree. The partridges were good friends of each other, spend many hours with each other. They enjoyed the company of each other, shared many stories and events of their lives. In this way both were lived happily with each other. Time passed away in this way.

One day one of the partridges went out with other friends in the jungle in search of food. When he did not return back home even at sunset the other partridge started worrying about him. He thought, “Why has the partridge still not returned home today? He did not ever do this. Has he been trapped by some hunter or may be killed? What happened with him? How can a lived without him? Definitely there is some reason behind his not returning home even at sunset.”

The partridge did not return home even the next day and the day after. Many days passed away but he did not return home. The other partridge kept worrying about him for many days and then he also gave up hope of his friend’s return.

One night a rabbit came to the same tree and saw an empty hole at the foot of the tree, so he decided to take shelter inside. He entered the hole and rest there. As the partridge had given up hope of his friend’s return, he did not say anything to the rabbit on occupying the hole.

After few days the partridge returned home. When the other partridge saw him, he asked him reason for not returning to home. He said him that he had gone to a place where there was plenty of food to eat. I lived there many days and had grown fat but he missed his friend very much, so he returned home back.

When the partridge saw a rabbit had taken over his house, he shouted on him, “O Rabbit! This hole is my home, and you have taken over during my absence. It’s not right to occupy some other home in his absence. I warn you to leave my home immediately.”

But the rabbit disagreed with him and said, “When I reached this place, I found it empty and so I made it my home. Now this is my home and I am not leaving from my home.” Then the partridge and the rabbit started to quarrel. After some time the partridge understood that there was no point in arguing with the rabbit, he said to the rabbit, “O Rabbit! You appear that you did not know the basis rights. Let us approach someone knowledgeable and holy person, who have well knowledge about holy books. Then he will decide who is right and who is wrong, and therefore who have the right to live in the hole.”

This time the rabbit agreed with him and as decided they went to look for a holy man to solve their problem.

At the same time a wild tomcat became aware somehow that they wanted to solve their problem through a holy person. So he immediately pretended as a well knowledgeable animal. Then he held a blade of holy Kusha grass in his paw and planned to stand at a place where he will be observed quickly. He immediately stood on the bank of a river with his eyes closed and started praying.

After some time the partridge and the rabbit reached the bank of the river, the rabbit noticed the tomcat and said, “This person looks holy and knowledgeable. Let us go and seek his advice.”

After heard this the partridge agreed with him and replied, “Yes, let us seek his advice but we should be very careful with him as he is a wild cat by birth and a natural enemy of both of us. He may harm us so we speak only from a distance not come near to him.”

As decided, they approached to the wild cat, but stood at a distance. They said, “O Holy person, please help us. We have a dispute between us, please solve our dispute. And advice us who is right in view of the holy books. If you consider one of us has done crime then you can eat him as well.

The wild tomcat replied, “O my friends, I have left the furious life of killing anyone as it leads to hell. Now I am in the path of reaching the God by non-violence. Non-violence is the very essential for reaching the heaven. I shall not harm any of you. However, I will hear both of you and solve your problem with the knowledge I have.”

Both the partridge and the rabbit impressed with him. Then the wild tomcat continued pretending, “But I am old, and cannot hear you from that distance. Please don’t fear! I do not harm even a mosquito or a bug. Please come close to me, and explain the whole matter. I will try to solve for problem.”

By all his saying the wild tomcat won the confidence of both of them. Both the partridge and the rabbit came near him and sat close to him. They started to explain the reason of their dispute. As they started explaining the wild tomcat began to thought that this the opportunity, I am waiting for. Within no time he jumped and captured on of them in his teeth and the other with his claws. He killed both of them and made a meal out of them.

    The Tale of Golden Droppings

Once there lived a special bird named Sindhuka in a huge tree on the top of a mountain. The speciality of the bird was that when her dropping fell on the earth, they turned into the Gold. He lived alone on this tree.

One day a hunter roamed to the top of the mountain in search of birds. After many hours when he was not able to catch any bird, he decided to take some rest under the huge tree on which the Sindhuka lived. Suddenly the bird discharged its dropping from the top of the tree, which turned into Gold as he fell on the earth. This all happening made the hunter surprised.

The hunter began to thought, I am catching birds from many years, but I never seen such a bird or even heard of such a bird, whose dropping convert into Gold. This is definitely a special bird, which I have to catch!"

Then he made a plan to catch the bird. He covered the tree with a net very carefully, which the bird did not notice and was caught. When the bird trapped into the net, the hunter put him into a cage and started travelling towards home. At the same time the bird thought how careless he was, that he did not notice the net and got trap.

On his way to home, the hunter thought, “If I keep this bird, I will become rich, and everyone will suspect on me. Someday, someone will come to know the truth of the bird, and then     informed the king about the bird and then I have to give it to the king. But if I present the bird directly to the king, then he offered me something precious in return of this bird.”

As planned he went straight to the king’s palace and told the king everything. He gave the bird to the king. The king became very happy after getting such a special bird whose dropping convert into Gold. He called his servant and ordered him to take care of the bird and to treat him as a royal bird. The king said, “Take proper care of this bird. Put him in a luxurious cage, and give him plenty of food and water."

Suddenly, one of the king’s ministers requested the king, “O King, How can a bird’s droppings turn into Gold? It’s impossible! How can you trust this hunter, who have no knowledge? I request you to open the cage and let the bird go away, and punish this hunter for giving such false information.”

The king gave a thought over the words of his trusted and wise minister, and then ordered the guards to arrest the hunter and release the bird.

No sooner as the bird had freed, he flew up and reached at the top of a nearby gate and sat there. Suddenly he discharged his droppings which turned into Gold that surprised the king and his ministers. They both got shocked and realising that he made a mistake then the king ordered his guards to catch the bird. But the bird flew away in the sky and he promised himself not to be careless again, and flew off where nobody can catch her again.

The Brahmin, the Thief, and the Demon

Once there lived a Brahmin, named Drona, in a certain town. The Brahmin left all the luxuries of life. He did not wear good clothes, did not eat delicious food or did not practise any lavish means. He followed rigorous practices of worship even during cold, hot and rainy seasons. He did not take care of his health so due to this he became very thin and weak. His hair and nails grew very long due to not maintaining them.

One of his followers offered him a pair of calves. He took care of the calves very much and fed them properly, so in due course of time they grew very fat. He loved them very much.

One day, a robber noticed the calves of the Brahmin and thought, “I shall steal these fat calves from him.” so he made a plan to steal them.

At night, as the robber returned with a rope to steal them he met a devil in his way with a very horrific appearance. As the thief saw him he got frightened and asked him, “Who are you?

The devil replied him, “I am a devil. I always speak the truth and hate the liars. Introduce yourself!"

The robber frightened with him and confessed, “I am a thief. Now I am on my way to steal two calves of a devoted Brahmin.” The devil impressed by him and then they both became friends. As they reached the Brahmin’s home they entered into the home and hid themselves. The Brahmin was at home and went to sleep. The devil and the robber waited for the Brahmin to fall asleep, so they got the opportunity to complete their works.

As soon as the Brahmin fell asleep, they demon came out of hiding and reached the Brahmin to eat him. The robber began to think if the Brahmin woke up when the devil went to eat him, his work will not complete. So he asked the devil to wait till he tied the calves with the rope and left from here.

But the devil did not agree with him and said, “If the calves start making sound during your stealing them, the Brahmin may wake up and escape from him and his purpose will not fulfil.” They both then started a heating argument, and due to this the Brahmin woke up.

When they both saw that the Brahmin woke up, the robber started complaining to the Brahmin that the demon was planning of eating him up. On this, the devil also complained to the Brahmin that the robber was planning to steal the calves from him.

After hearing all this the Brahmin understood the entire matter, and immediately he started praying chants. Hearing this, the devil ran away immediately as fast as he could. Then the Brahmin took out a stick and chased away the robber. In this way the Brahmin got rid from both the devil and the robber.

  • The Brahmin and the thieves

    The Brahmin and the thieves

Once there lived a Brahmin, named Mitra Sharma in a small village. He was a deity of Fire- God and worshiped daily. One day during rainy season, when the sky was crowded with clouds, he wanted to conduct a certain sacrificial ritual. So he went to a nearby village, to meet a follower of God and to request him for a goat that he will offer it as a sacrifice to the Gods.
As the Brahmin reached, he requested the follower of God, “Son, I want to perform a sacrificial ritual at this prosperous time. So I came here to you, please give me a well fed goat.” The man agreed with him and gave the Brahmin one of his best goats. After that the Brahmin started his journey to his home.
The Brahmin carried the goat on his shoulders so that he did not have any problems in controlling the goat on his way. As he covered only a few distances, three thieves followed him at a certain distance so that the Brahmin did not notice them. They were very hungry and they knew that the Brahmin was alone with his goat.
They started discussing, “We will save ourselves from this hunger, in this rainy season, if we can got success in cheating the Brahmin and steal the goat.” So they made a plan to cheat the Brahmin, in order to gain the goat for themselves.
According to the plan the first thief stood in the path of the Brahmin with a road in his hand. As the Brahmin reached him with the goat on his shoulder, he said to him, “O Brahmin, why are you carrying a dog on his shoulder? What is the reason that you behave so foolishly.” On hearing this the Brahmin got very angry and he replied him, “Can’t you see the difference between a dog and a goat? Are you blind? Can't you see I am carrying a sacrificial goat?"
Then the thief thought he played his part and said to him, “Please don't get angry on me. It’s your goat, you may carry it anyway as you want. Please continue your journey.”
The Brahmin continued his journey but as he covered a little distance, the second thief approached him. Then he said to the Brahmin, “O Brahmin, how foolish you are! How can you carry this dead calf on your shoulder? Shame on you!"
The Brahmin got very angry and shouted on him, “Can't you see it is a goat and not a dead calf? Are you blind totally or you lost your mind? Then the thief replied to him, ““Please don't get angry on me. It’s your goat, have it anyway you want it to be.”

When the Brahmin had gone a little further, the third thief approached him and said, "O Brahmin, This is highly shameful for you do something like this. Why do you carry a donkey on your shoulders? Shame on you! Put him down, before anyone sees you doing this!"

This time the Brahmin began to think that how can the three persons not see that he was carrying a goat? He thought that he must be carrying a goblin, which is changing shape all the time. He terrified, put the goat down and ran away home.

The thieves had succeeded in their plan. They caught the goat and killed him to feast on him.

  • The Elephants and the Hares

    The Elephants and the Hares

Once there lived a big group of elephants in a jungle. They lived deep in the jungle at a certain place near a pond. They enjoyed the water of the pond, so there was no need to go outside this place. They all lived happily there.

After some time, there came a time, when there was no raining took place in that area and the pond started to drying up.  The elephants worried about the drying up the ponds, so they reached to meet the king of the elephant. They said to him, “O King, we do not have enough water anymore, as the pond started to dry up. Some of our young ones are on the verge of death, if we do not find some better place which have sufficient amount of water, we may lost them.”

After heard this, the king began to thought and then said to them, “I remember knowing a place where there is a very big lake at a time. It must still be full of water. We can go there.” The other elephants became very happy and decided to go there in the next morning.

Next morning they all started their journey to the lake. They all travelled for five days and five nights and finally reached the place. There was indeed a big lake, full of water which satisfied the elephants. When the elephants saw so much water in the lake they started jumping into the water and played there.

There were a number of holes in the earth near the lake, where a group of rabbits lived. The holed destroyed all of sudden because of the elephants. A number of rabbits were trampled under the elephants. Some of them died and many others were seriously injured. But the elephant gave no attention towards them. Rabbits could not do anything to stop this misery, so some of them ran away to save their lives.

In the evening when the elephant left the lake, the rabbits that had run away started gathering at one place. They assembled in sorrow and discussed, “Oh dear! These elephants will come here every day, due to lack of water at any other place. We must think a permanent solution to get rid from all this or many of us will get trampled tomorrow. But what can be do against these elephants? We must leave this place to save our lives.”

All the rabbits agreed but one of them disagreed and said, “Dear friends, this is our ancestral home. We must not leave this place. If we can get success in frightening the elephants, they ran away and never return to this place. I have a plan for this. Although we are small rabbits but we are capable of doing this.”

The rabbits agreed with him, and then he explained his whole plan to them. As planned, a rabbit sat on a hill which was on the path of the elephants. After few moments the elephants came there. The rabbit shouted from the hill, “You wicked elephants! I stop you to enter the lake. This lake belongs to the Moon- God. Go way from there.” The king of the elephant and other elephants stopped for a while. The king of the elephant would not dare to anger on the rabbit if any God either. He asked the rabbit what message the small rabbit had for him.

The rabbit replied, “I am the messenger of the Moon- God. He has sent me here to inform you that he prohibits you from entering his lake. Yesterday, many rabbits were injured and many of them were died due to your visit. The rabbits live under the protection of the Moon God, and he is very angry with you. If you want to survive, you should not enter the lake again."

The king began to think for a while and then said, “If it is right. Then tell me where your Moon- God is. I will go away with my friends, once we have asked for his forgiveness.” It was the evening time, so the rabbit said to him, “The moon God has come down already to his lake to console the families of the rabbits who got killed yesterday. If you want to meet him come with me.”

The elephants agreed with him. He led the king of the elephant to the lake where the reflection of the moon clearly seen in the water. As they reached there he said, “He is very angry today, so please bow to him quietly and leave. You must not disturb him in his meditation. Otherwise, he will be angry with you too.”

The king of the elephant got shocked on seeing the moon in the water. He believed the rabbit and bowed the moon silently and left the place with all elephants. And then the elephant lived happily there after without any disturbance by the elephants anymore.

  • The Tale of Two Snakes

    The Tale of Two Snakes

Once there lived a king named Devashakti. He remained very disappointed due to his son because he was very weak and thin. Day by day he became weaker and thinner. The king called all the well known physicians from far off places but they could not cure the king’s son as there was a snake inside his stomach. The physicians tried all types of treatments but they could not succeed.

The prince was also frustrated by himself and his father’s sadness due to his illness. He fed up totally to his life. So he decided to go away to some other place. One night he got success to run away and he reached to another kingdom. He started living in a temple and ate from whatever alms he collected from the people.

This new kingdom was ruled by a king, who had two beautiful young daughters. They both were raised with the best of learning. Every morning they reached her father’s room and bow at their father’s feet to seek his blessings. One of them said to his father, “My dear father, we got all the joy of the world due to your blessing.” And the other daughter said, “O king, one can only get the things which are destined for one’s actions.”

The king was happy with one of his daughter but the comment of the second daughter made him angry day by day. One day he got so angry that he ordered his ministers, “Take her away and marry her with anybody you meet outside the palace. Let her enjoy the fruits that are destined for her actions.”

The ministers followed the king order and they took out the princess outside the palace, but they did not find anybody outside the palace. When they reached the temple they saw the young prince living in the temple. They reached him and then they both were married.

The princess was a religious girl, and she regarded his husband as her God. She was very happy with her marriage. They both decided to travel to a different place of the country, as it is not suitable for them to make the temple as their home.

On their way, the prince became very tired and wanted to take some rest under a tree. As he was getting weaker and weaker every day, he could not walk long distances. While the prince rest under the tree the princess decided to buy some food from the nearby market. So she left to the market, and when she returned, she saw a snake coming out from a nearby hole and her husband still sleeping. As she reached near her husband to alert him, she saw another snake coming from her husband’s mouth. She hid herself to keep a watch on them.

The snake from the hole said to the other snake, “Why are you hurting this young prince? You risk your own life too. If the prince drinks soup of cumin seeds and mustard, you would die for definitely!"

Then the other snake from the prince’s mouth replied, “Why do you guard two pots of gold which you do not have any need of? You risk your life, too. If someone pours hot water and oil on the hole, you would die definitely!” They both started a heated argument in this way. After few moments they both went inside their respective places, but the princess had already heard all the discussions and she known their secrets.

She then act accordingly and gave her husband a soup of cumin seeds and mustard and the snake present inside his stomach died. Within few hours, the young prince began to recover and regained much strength. After that, they poured hot water and oil on the hole of the snake and then another snake was also died. They dug out the two pots of gold that the snake was guarding.

After few days the young princess recovered very much and they also have two pots full of gold. They lived happily ever after.
