  • Money Can’t Buy Happiness

    Money Can’t Buy Happiness

It is about the greed and it’s consequences on human relations.

A boy named Raghav was born in a middle class family in a small town in Bangalore.     As he grew, he wanted expensive toys and clothes. He wanted to eat in expensive restaurants, and have a luxurious car to travel. But due to the only income of his father, the family always had to compromise. His mother told about how hard his father worked to turn his status from poor to a middle class family.

She told her that his grandfather was not as supportive to his father as his father was to him. His grandfather wanted his father to work in his fields, grow plants & cut crops in the season of harvesting. He managed to study by himself along with doing the field work as per his grandfather’s wishes. He passed the government examination for bank in his fifth attempt and became a clerk in a government bank.

His salary was not enough to satisfy his family’s all needs. His mother was understanding as she had seen how his husband worked hard to change his days. He didn’t care for what he himself wanted. He would rather think of getting something bigger and better for his son.He had even got Raghav’s admission in a good school, spent on his tuition fees and also did a part time job in order to make his son’s future bright.

Hearing all this from his mother, Raghav thought of working harder than his father. Since his demands were not fulfilled, he decided to work as hard as he could to become a rich businessman and live a lifestyle as that of rich high class society people.

He thought to himself of how could he do this. And a voice from within said to do something successful people do. He read Steve Job’s biography, Ratan Tata’s journey & many such entrepreneurs who worked day and night to make their future bright. He started doing marketing internships to improve his skills. This helped him a lot in working towards his dreams and turning them into reality. He became ambitious.

He did his schooling from  the same school and graduated from a government college in Bangalore. During his graduation, he learned more business skills. He filled an application to go to the USA for MBA. His application was approved and he went there.

Raghav , after graduating from a college in Bangalore went to the USA for higher studies. He completed MBA from USA while doing a part time job along with his studies. He learned the business skills and techniques from the top businessmen in many workshops. After his MBA and studies, he worked in multinational company as the manager. He earned  lot in that company. Then he thought of expanding his own business in India. With the same thought, he came back to India and started with a small business in sports products. Gradually, his business expanded in Bangalore as well as many metro cities of India.

His business expanded more and more. He hired many employees in his company. They had their own brand name now. He had his own MNC in Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai including his own city & stores in every mall of the cities and thus he became one of the top young entrepreneurs in India who inspired many youths.

During all this, he got married to  beautiful Lady named Radha. After two years of marriage, she gave birth to twins. Both were little naughty but cute. As Raghav was rich now, he looked forward to his sons not lacking anything. They both had expensive toys, they used to have monthly trips to the USA, the UK and around the world too.

They studied in an expensive school, grew up to be richer than they were born since the business expanded with a great speed. Raghav had all the skills one needs to run a successful business. Growing in such an atmosphere, his both sons became greedy.

Both of them didn’t study rather waste their father’s each penny earned with so much hard work and dedication to make his son’s lives easier than he had. Each of them grew jealous of one another. They wanted money & property. Both demanded their shares in the entire property of their father.

Both of them got equal part of the property. But Raghav and his wife were left with nothing except sorrow, grief and loneliness. Both sons  got their houses that were no more a home   without parents and money but none agreed to keep Raghav and his wife with him. They were left alone in a big house. His wife died due to the disputes of her sons for the property. She couldn’t live with that pain in her heart. Now he was left all alone in that house. Then he realized what his father used to tell him. He told him that time is money. He would have spend some time with his sons teaching him the proper need of money. He realized that there’s nothing that can satisfy one’s greed. Only need can be satisfied.

His sons had  their own business which  was not as successful as his father’s business. They could not realize their mistakes until their deeds came back to them.  They had the taste of their own medicines .Hence time passes and one learns so many mysterious facts about life.

  • Never Break Trust

    Never Break Trust

Once in jungle there lived a Monkey with his family. A father monkey, a mother monkey and a baby monkey. Nearby the same jungle there was a river. In that river there was a crocodile. The crocodile and its family were all alone.

As we all know that crocodile is very harmful and it can harm us to a very great extent. So likewise the monkey and his family were also very afraid of the crocodile. But one day when the monkey and his family was sitting on the banana tree the crocodile came under the tree and stared at the monkey. The monkey was very afraid and started jumping from one tree to another tree. The crocodile was also following him and finally when the monkey stopped jumping from the trees the crocodile who was staring the monkey now started to talking with him. The crocodile shared with monkey that the crocodile is alone and wants to do friendship with the monkey and his family. The monkey was all shocked but then the monkey did friendship with the crocodile.

Now as the monkey and crocodile became friends the monkey was now not afraid of the crocodile and they have now become good friends. Every day the crocodile came to monkey and they would share the things with each other, play with each other and have fun. The monkey would climb the trees and throw the banana’s down. The crocodile would have the bananas. The monkey also would give some bananas for the crocodile’s family. The crocodile would than take the banana’s home and give it to the family. They would happily have it.

One day the crocodile and its wife had an evil thought in their mind. The bananas are so sweet, if the monkey and its family members are having the bananas everyday their heart must be much sweeter than the banana’s. So they decide to kill the monkey and its family member one by one and eat their heart. So the crocodile and the family thought of a plan.  They will call the monkey home by some way or the other and kill him and then likewise they will kill all the family members.

So one day when the crocodile went to the monkey while they both were having banana’s the crocodile invited monkey at their place and said to come with the crocodile. Monkey was little confused and told the crocodile that how can the monkey come to their place as he can’t swim and the place where the crocodile lives is on the other side of the river. Crocodile said monkey not to worry as he will carry him on his back. Monkey thought for a while and agreed. The Monkey sat on crocodiles back and they both swam the river, while they were crossing the river, the crocodile said the monkey that they are going to kill the monkey and are going to eat the heart as it is so sweet like the banana’s that they are having every day. So monkey was very much afraid and thought of a plan. After some time Monkey said the crocodile that he can’t have his heart as it is on the branch of a tree. The monkey said the crocodile to take him back and then they can have the monkey’s heart and come back. The crocodile agreed and they both went back.

When they reached banana tree the monkey hastily climbed the tree and asked the crocodile to leave as now their friendship is broken. He trusted him so much. He was like a true friend to him but by doing this he has broken his trust and now they can’t be friends anymore.

The Moral we get from the story is never break any’s trust, especially the one who trusts you completely and with all the heart.

  • THE TRUE GENTLEMAN

    THE TRUE GENTLEMAN

Gentleness is innate. It is reflected not in the complexion or appearance of a person. It is reflected in the deeds of an individual. A true gentleman is a paradigm of human qualities. He is endowed with benevolence, magnanimity, integrity of character, honesty and empathy. He is humble, polite and is a true portrait of kindness and virtues.

I was travelling in a train. In a berth beside me, a woman was travelling with her kids and lots of luggage. She was talking to another woman, who was a stranger. They both were busy gossiping and telling each other about their family affairs, sharing their joys and sorrows and complaining about their in-laws. Sometimes, they would burst into laughter and on the next moment, silence would fall heavily over the two ladies. Their kids were playing. When both of them were chatting and giggling, one of the ladies saw a man on the above berth who was listening to their gossip intently. The woman got suspicious of him. He looked like a rogue with unshaved beard, dark and thick mustaches, beady, pretending eyes and sanguine nose. He looked exactly like a devil.

At the next station, the woman got down to purchase something from the vendors. Suddenly, the man also got down. This made the lady more suspicious. She, at once, looked inside her berth and saw that her suitcase was missing. It contained gold jewellery. She was greatly astonished. Then, she remembered that when she was telling the other woman that she was on her way to Jaipur and was going there to attend her brother’s wedding, the man was listening very carefully. She was sure that it was the same man who had stolen her suitcase and no one else. I was observing what was happening. I thought to help her but my parents always instruct me not to talk to the strangers while you are travelling. So, I remained sitting at my place. I had to get down at the next station.

Finally, I reached my destination. Since, the train arrived before time, I was waiting for my parents to pick me up. I saw that the lady also alighted at the next station and lodged a complaint with the railway police. Nothing happened. She was sobbing and telling the police that it was her brother’s wedding. She was waiting at the station only with a hope of getting back her suitcase. I could see her children also crying along with her. But the lady looked so worried, looking here and there with all the thoughts muddled up in her mind. Then, she suddenly saw the man whom she took to be a trickster. It seemed he was coming towards her. She became tensed and grabbed her children. He approached her with a smile. He returned the suitcase to her telling her that the other woman she was talking to, was a trickster. He also told her that he alighted halfway of his journey because he had seen that woman getting down with the suitcase which was not hers. The woman thanked him and also apologized him for taking him as a trickster. He was a true gentleman.

Meanwhile, my parents arrived and I described them the whole incident that happened.

The crust of the story is that we should not judge a person from the circumstances as the circumstantial evidence is not adequate for the judgement of a person. The moral we derive from this story is that we should not judge a person by his appearance, but by his deeds.

  • Beseech for service

    Beseech for service

Once lived a poor old lady Meera. She used to worship god without fail each and every day.  Meera resides within a small hut situated in a plane uncultivable land which is  isolated thus she has to walk a long distance even to fetch water for drinking and miscellaneous purpose.

One fine day walking through a thick dense forest in the hot summer season, she was carrying a heavy bundle of dry sticks in her head. She collected those sticks to use as firewood and cook food to feed her bed ridden husband, son and also her grandchildren. Due to the scorching heat of the sun she became so tired and was not able to carry the firewood. Somehow or the other the sticks fell down. Irrespective of her continuous try, she lost her optimistic thought to get those bundle of sticks in her head. Since the sticks were heavy the impuissant old woman was so much disturbed and said “Who will help me to get this bundle on my head?” .So she cried out in a loud voice  “Oh .. God please help this poor soul”.

Suddenly the god of all creations appeared in his own form in front of the disturbed woman and he asked “what do you want dear old lady?”

The old lady replied “God kindly help me to get this bundle on my head”.

The lord proprietor of everything, the powerful of all, the one with all knowledge, all beauty and all renunciation has appeared before her to give benediction, but the lady just asked for that bundle to get on her head.

This is what we are doing .We ask for a bundle in our head. Whenever we visit holy places to worship god we ask for all material pleasures of this world so that we become happy, our family remains happy, we get all wealth and enjoy all material things losing our memory that we are connected with god. This is our innocence or a stare of not knowing that pure devotional service and mercy are the only things in the world that should be asked to the supreme personality of godhead.

If we want something from god we should just blindly beg for an opportunity to serve the supreme. When people are engaged in any kind of devotional service to god they will be blessed by him and thus they will be able to meet all the daily needs.

To be born as a human is an opportunity given by him to show our love and sacrifice towards the almighty. The purpose of our birth should be understood and used wisely. The ultimate aim of all human soul is to serve the almighty lord and seek his blessings .If we are found as a dedicated servant of lord then we can seek his blessings and live happily with all the health and wealth surrounding us. Seek happiness just by serving the lord. Once tasted the joy of serving him enjoy the mercy showered upon you.

  • United we stand and Divided we fall

United we stand and Divided we fall

The story has three characters inside, helpless father and his three sons.

Once in a village there lived a man who was a farmer. He had three sons. All of them quarreled among themselves every time. They even did not take care for their father and did not listen to anyone’s advice. In village also whenever anyone gave them good advice all of his three son’s started fighting with them. They did not like each other at all. They fought with each other all the time. They fought even on the matters that were of not so much importance. Their father was very much frustrated with them and did not understand what to do.

This was not liked by their father and whenever he tried to tell them anything they were not ready to listen to him. No matter how much he tried to convince them and explain them anything they were not ready to listen to their father. Their father tried to do this so many times but all of his efforts were in vein. His sons were not ready to listen to anything. He became helpless, worried and thought what would happen to his family once he dies as he is already old aged and would not live more now. He wanted to see all his live together happily.

So out of frustration one day when he was passing by the village he met a wise man and explained him the whole scenario. The wise men gave him one plan and told him to execute the same. Their father took advice of a wise man and executed the plan given by the wise man and which they both had thought in their mind and called all the three sons in his room. He gave each one of them a stick and asked them to break it. They brook it easily. After that their father gave them bundle of sticks and told them to break it. It was not possible for them at all to break that bundle of stick. After everyone was done with these task, their father explained them the importance of unity.

Their father explained them it is easy to break you and your unity when you are alone but when you are together it is not easy to separate you. Even the hardest battle can be won by you when you are united. Like when it was easy for you all to break an individual stick but when you were given a bundle of sticks it was difficult for you all to break it. So like that when you are together no one can break you or your unity but when you are alone it can be easily done by anyone. So never fight amongst yourself and stay united. After that all the three sons lived in peace and unity and their father was happy to see them live happily together.

The moral that we get from the story is it is easy break a family or friendship of the individual’s when they are alone but when they are united it is difficult to do so.

Mani signed the receipt and sent the courier boy.

    20161217_105249

Gautham,” sir, what is this, somebody has sent you gift…!”

Mani saw the sender’s address; it got addressed in the name of Sheela.

Mani said,”Sheela..!! Hmm, which Sheela is this…?”

Gautham,”oh sir, then you know more than one person named as Sheela…!!! Sir…it seems you have a lot of girlfriends also..?”

Mani,” these are all nothing man …for my talents…the world has not recognized me”

Gautham,”sir, you will be famous in the world soon sir”

Mani,” Ok let us see what has our Sheela sent us”

Mani tore the top sheet of the parcel cover and opened the parcel.

    “Boom!!!”

A Bomb exploded with a large bang.

Mani and Gautham got torn into pieces by the heavy explosion of the bomb.

    20161217_123040

The room was spoilt and full of gasses. On seeing this, a gatekeeper ran and came to the spot and found bits and pieces of the bodies of Mani and Gautham.

Gatekeeper shouted,” Help! Help! Sir somebody come to help”

A man who was passing by that building came running towards the gatekeeper.

    He asked, “What happened?”

Gatekeeper said,” Sir I am innocent, a courier boy delivered a parcel”

Gatekeeper said, “And after he went, a bomb exploded and they are dead!!!”

The man said,”Ok then inform the police”

Gatekeeper said,” Sir I am new to this area…could you please call the police”

The man said,” Hmmm…Ok, I will do it for you…!”

Gatekeeper said, “Thanks sir…please do it”

The man took his mobile phone and dialled the helpline to police.

The call got answered,” hello..!! May I help you?”

The man said,” sir, there is a Bomb blast here”

    Police said,” what…!!!Bomb blast…where…?”

The man said, “In 10th avenue, srilekha Nagar”

Police said,” ok we will be there within 5 to 10 minutes…and by the way what your name is?”

    The man replied,”Sharath”

    Moral of the Story:

Truth is like fire; it will burn itself out and spread everywhere. Every action of a human being has a universal reciprocation. For all good deeds a human does, it will be resulting with good rewards. If a man plants saplings, and waters it to grow as a tree, his son or family may get fruits from that tree at a later stage. If a man fires a hut of a neighbour, he will get a backfire one day or other.

  • A Man with Intellectual Mind and Optimistic Perspective: Stephen Hawking

A Man with Intellectual Mind and Optimistic Perspective: Stephen Hawking

An inspirational journey of a man who could not walk, talk or move, but his working mind changed it all.

“Quiet people have the loudest minds.”

The man behind the above quote completely justifies what a quiet person can do. Stephen William Hawking, a name who has brought revolution in the world of Science is a true inspiration for the world.

He came to life on the 300th death anniversary of Galileo i.e. 8th of January 1942 in the country who ruled India for years, England. He was a part of a scholar family who attended the prestigious University of Oxford where his mother Isobel Hawking studied philosophy and His father Frank Hawking was into medicine. He was grown up in an environment where a research scientist was a casual thing to be.

Little Stephen was never a topper in school. He did his college from renowned Oxford and Cambridge University.

He had a quality number of friends and preferred Classical music over everything. Being a sharp mind since childhood, he used to create complex board games. He had a deep passion to study Mathematics but unavailability of the course at the Oxford University made him take Physics and further went on to study Cosmology.

A great man in making was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Motor Neuron Disease) at an early age of 21, when he was about to finish his Physics degree at Oxford. He used to bump into things, fall unintentionally and became cumbersome. The disease affected his nerve cells and his body slowly wasted away. Doctors never expected him to live long enough to complete his Post graduation.

Dejected and depressed by his situation, Stephen fell in love with a girl named, Jane who gave her something to live for. They soon got married and Stephen worked on Physics inventing the idea of space-time singularity in a black hole. Stephen soon lost his ability to walk and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He had to undergo a severe operation where his voice was removed and 24 hours nurse care became a must. He was on a life support system that time, but his will to never give up brought him back to life.

His slurry voice was no longer with him and he found it difficult to communicate.

Software named Equaliser was brought up by a computer expert Walt Woltosz. This program allowed a person to select words from a series, controlled by hand or eye movement.Later, David Mason fiited a synthesizer and computer to Stephen’s chair giving him a voice with American accent.

“A brief History of Time” is an international best seller on Physics and his theories. His genius mind and work have won in numerous award and honours. He has a mind of a genius and calculations are a simple work for his mind.

At an age of 73, Stephen has become an inspiration for everybody. He has accomplished his unique dreams being dependent on prosthesis, a synthesiser or a computer system. He is a living example of what a man can do with his mind. Comparison to Albert Einstein is the best compliment he could ever receive for his singularity theorems. Although he cannot walk, cannot talk but in his mind he has been free.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. If you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.”

  • A DECISION THAT WAS NOT HIS

A DECISION THAT WAS NOT HIS

This story is all about a boy who wanted to make his parents happy and in the course of doing so, he took a decision which not only made him suffer but also his parents. There is also a concept of lack of communication between parents and child is shown. Had the boy told the parents about his ambitions, the situation could have been better.

The alarm clock rings at 6:00 a.m. but Raunak is still sleeping. Alarm clock again rings and this time he gets up hurriedly. His eyes are red and he is looking so weary and tired. He gets up and goes to college within 10 minutes without even having his breakfast. This routine was not new to him. It has become his daily routine. Late night studies, skipping breakfast, seriousness all the time has become the part of his life.

He was not like this years before. But a decision has made him so. He was cheerful, a mischievous boy who knew how to enjoy every seconds of his life. But something happened . Something which made him an altogether different person. A boy who loved laughing at times had forgotten to laugh. A boy who loved nature once preferred to live in dark now. This all happened after he took a decision .

Just a year back, when 12th board results were announced ,Raunak's parents were so proud of him. Afterall he was the topper of his school. All his relatives and friends congratulated him. He was overwhelmed too.

But soon his happiness disappeared when one of the reporters asked his father -"what are the future plans of your son?"  to which his father replied -"my son will be an engineer."

Listening to his father's reply Raunak almost broke into tears. This was not he had dreamt of. His desire was something else. He wanted to be a writer. Writing was like a love for him. He was also the creative head of his school.

His father wanted him to be an engineer but never bothered to find out what he wanted.

The whole night, Raunak had been thinking about this. He wanted to tell his father about what he wanted to do but he was equally scared too. He always wanted to make his parents happy. He thought what if I tell my father that I don't want to be an engineer, what will he say? Will his dream of seeing me as an engineer would break? He thought and thought and without getting answers to any of his questions, he felt asleep.

The next day, he went to his father with a strong desire to tell him that he want to pursue Eng(Hon) rather than going for science. But when he was about to enter the room he heard some voice. His father was saying to his mother -"our son has made us proud, soon he would be a great engineer and I am waiting for that day. You know I always wanted to be one but somehow I couldn't fulfill my dream. Now our son will fulfill my dream. I feel immense happiness."

When his father had finished saying, he noticed Raunak standing at the door. He called him and said -" thank you son for giving us these moments of joy and happiness."

He stood there silent and hiding his sorrow he said -" dad, your dreams are mine now. I will make sure that it gets fulfilled."

Saying so he came back to his room. With a heavy heart he decided to go for engineering but deep within he knew it was not what he wanted. He knew this decision of him would make his parents happy and thus without thinking of anything else, he finalized his decision of studying engineering in Kota.

This was the decision which made him isolated and also a different person. A decision where he didn't follow his heart and dumped his dream of becoming a writer. He did not gather courage to tell his father how much he hated physics and that maths always scares him. He just couldn't stand for what he wanted and as a result he landed up in Kota studying a subject so meaningless for him.

Early days of his college were not so bad. But slowly and gradually when the pressure of studies, assignment increased he was finding it very difficult to cope with the situation. Many a times he cried regretting his decision. He wished he could tell his parents about his decisions and ambitions.

After returning from college he headed for tuitions and was awake till 4:00 in the morning. Sleepless nights has taken away all his spark which he used to have once. Raunak soon realized that he should escape from this life.

There again he took a DECISION.

Next day, the sun shone bright but the life of Raunak was not at all bright. The decision which he took was…. to end his life and free himself from every complicated situations.

Previous night, he had slept and he was still sleeping. For the very first time, there was peace in his face as he was sleeping. And sooner we realized that he wasn't sleeping. He had done something. Yes! he had committed suicide leaving behind unfulfilled dream of him as well as his father. There was a note too.

    "Dear mom and dad,

From the very beginning, I wanted to be a writer and thus had planned to do English honors but on the day of results, I got to know that you want me to become an engineer. On that day itself my dreams were shattered. I had promised myself that I will never let you down and that's why keeping aside my ambitions, I followed what you wanted and pursued engineering.

Dad, these subjects never fascinated me. I was not at all enjoying studying. These were the boring subjects but still I tried.

I worked hard and was very focused towards my studies but the results again showed me how poor I was.

I am giving up dad. I am giving up. I know it's a cowardice act to give up but that's all I could. I am sorry dad. I am sorry that I couldn't fulfill your dreams and also I lost your faith in me.

  • The Importance of Hard Work

    The Importance of Hard Work

Out of the three children that Mr. And Mrs. Patel had, the youngest Vineet had always been their favourite.  Vineet had an older brother and an older sister, Ayush and Riya. They were twins and both of them had started primary school a few months back. Vineet was still in elementary school. He had made lot of friends in school and enjoyed going there and learning new things.

While Ayush and Riya had to get good grades in order to get gifts from their parents, Vineet didn’t have to do a thing. His parents showered him with gifts without any reason. He was the apple of their eye. Ayush and Riya did feel sad, seeing their parents give special attention to their younger brother, but they never complained about it. They accepted everything as they were presented to them.

But slowly Vineet started to think that he would get whatever he wanted. Every time he would go up to his mother or father with a request for something, they would fulfil it almost immediately. It seemed as if they were ready to get the world at Vineet’s feet. At Vineet’s growing demands, his parents started to realise their mistake and decided to teach Vineet that gifts only came through hard work.

So one day while on a trip to the mall, Vineet spotted a stylish remote controlled racing car on the window of a shop. When he asked his father if he could buy it, for the first time his father refused. He explained to Vineet that his brother and sister had aced their exams at school and that is why he had promised them gifts this time. He promised to buy the car next month if Vineet get good grades in school.

Vineet had never imagined that his father could refuse. So he became angry. He yelled, cried and stomped around and refused to budge from his place.

His parents had to literally drag him home. He refused to eat dinner or talk to his parents. For the next seven days Vineet was a ball of anger, shouting, crying and yelling at everyone. When things were getting worse, Ayush and Riya decided that they would have to talk to Vineet.

They quietly crept into their little brother’s room and found him perched on his bed, angrily colouring a photo of a car. They went and sat on the bed. Vineet ignored them. Riya softly called out “Vineet?” At this Vineet looked up at them coldly and was just about to cry out when Ayush started speaking. He explained to Vineet how much their parents loved him. He reminded him how they never said no to his requests. He wanted Vineet to understand that to get something, he needed to earn it. He would have to prove that he was worthy of the car. Vineet listened to them quietly and nodded his head occasionally.

Slowly he realised that his siblings were right. He also realised that he would have to work hard to earn his reward just like his siblings did.

On understanding his mistake he hugged his brother and sister and thanked them on making him realise his faults. Then he went downstairs and stood before his parents. He looked at them and said “I am sorry papa. I am sorry Ma. I understand that I have to work hard to get a reward. I understand that gifts don’t come for free.” He wiped his tears and continued, “I will never do this again. I promise to get a good grade in class so that you are happy and then I can earn my new remote controlled car.”

At this his parents were overjoyed. They realised that their little boy was growing up. They also appreciated the efforts of Ayush and Riya and praised them. After all, there was no other joy than earning gifts through hard work.

  • Lying is a Sin

    Lying is a Sin

It was a pleasant evening when Prakriti went shopping with her mother.  Her birthday was almost here and she was excited about the new dress she would be getting from her mother. Today was Friday and the coming Wednesday was her birthday. Her mother had brought her along to buy things for the party. She had invited all her friends from elementary school, after all she was about to turn five! She would be a grown up.

Prakriti had been yearning for a new pink dress, which she had seen at a big store the month before. She was sure that she would look like a princess when she wore it. She wanted her mother to buy her that dress so that she could wear it during her birthday party and show it to all her friends. So after having finished shopping for the party, she dragged her mother towards the store with the purpose of buying that pink princess dress. Oh how excited she was!

She almost skipped into the store with her mother behind her and went straight for the pink dress. She pointed towards it and said “I want this dress, Ma” Her mother smiled. She went forward and took the dress off the rack and turned to look at its price tag.  Instantly, her mother’s smile dropped and she looked sad. She turned back to her daughter and said that she didn’t have enough money to get the dress Prakriti wanted.

With so much money already being spent on the party, it would be impossible for them to afford this expensive dress.

Prakriti was devastated. She didn’t know what to do. Now what would she tell her friends? She had already told them that this was the dress she would buy for her birthday and her friends had seemed so excited! Even though her mother bought her a dress, it was nowhere near as beautiful as the princess dress. Dejected she returned home quietly and didn’t say a word to her parents. Both her mother and father were heartbroken that they couldn’t make Prakriti’s wish come true, but couldn’t do anything to fix it.

Next morning Prakriti left for school. The entire way she thought of various things she could tell her friends, about why she couldn’t buy the dress, but she came up with nothing. That is the reason why, when her friends asked her about the dress she lied to them. She said that she would be buying it today and that she would most definitely wear it on her birthday. Her friends seemed to be satisfied with that information but Prakriti felt uneasy. She had lied for the first time in her life and she hated the feeling.  She decided that she would have to convince her parents to get that dress for her somehow. She just had two days.

For the next two days, Prakriti tried various ways to convince her parents to get her that dress, but they simply couldn’t. They didn’t have the extra money to. Finally Prakriti’s birthday arrived and she had no other choice than to wear the other dress during her birthday party.  When her friends arrived with gifts Prakriti was momentarily distracted from her sadness. But suddenly her best friend Ayesha said “Prakriti, where is your princess dress? You promised to wear it. Why aren’t you? “

At this Prakriti’s mother gave her a questioning look. Prakriti hung her head and replied “I don’t have it.” Her friends immediately started shooting more questions about the dress. It was then that her mother realized that Prakriti had lied to her friends. She gave her daughter a disapproving glare and left the room. Prakriti immediately excused herself and ran after her mother. She couldn’t bear to see her mother so disappointed.

She tugged on her mother’s arm. “I am Sorry Ma. I shouldn’t have lied to my friends. I should have told them the truth. I understand now. I do love this dress too!” she said pointing at the dress she was wearing.

Her mother dropped to her needs and hugged her daughter. She wiped Prakriti’s tears and said “I promise to get you that dress next month. But don’t ever lie again? Understood? You end up hurting yourself in the end.” Prakriti nodded her head vigorously and gave her mother a kiss on the check. She went back to her friends and told them the truth. Her friends didn’t seem very angry though. They hugged her and asked her to forget about the princess dress. They complimented her on the dress she was wearing and Prakriti glowed with happiness.

On her fifth birthday, Prakriti learnt two important things about life. The first thing was that gifts when given from the heart meant more than anything else in the world. The money didn’t matter. The other thing that she learnt was that lying was a sin. It would never give her happiness. So she vowed to be on the side of truth for the rest of her life.
