  • Let’s not forget to thank

    Let’s not forget to thank

Instead of saying I can’t do it, keep trying with a will to improve. Instead of saying he’s better than me; ask yourself what you are missing. Instead of cribbing over things you do not have, thank god for what more you possess than others.

Mr. Seth was writing the formulae for finding out the perimeter and area of a square. As soon as his chalk clinked the last word, in came Keshav, huffing and puffing. The clock read 7:08 AM for the whole class to know the fact that he was 8 minutes late. Being not on time once or twice in a while was acceptable as of course students had the best excuses that saved them from the teacher’s ruler prints on their palms; “Mom woke me up late, I took time to have breakfast as the milk was too hot, I had to wait for the water to be boiling in the geyser because the morning was very chilly.” But Keshav never made any of these excuses. Maybe because he wasn’t fortunate enough to acquire a simple and typical morning routine just like all of us.

Keshav walked back home and waved to his friends in the school bus with the meek hands that were on the receiving side of a wooden ruler for 4 straight days now. Keshav never took a rickshaw or a bus to his home not only because he couldn’t afford it, but also because he just wanted to reach the filthy place he called his house as late as possible. He hated the cramped one bedroom white walled flat which was shades of red by now thanks to his dad’s gutka habits. He couldn’t sleep at night owing to the pleading cries that children made in the congested area when their frustrated and drunk parents came back home and hit them. A father is supposed to and morally bind to be your saviour, the one who looks out for you at every step and supports you, takes care of all your basic needs emotionally as well as financially and spoils you once in a while. But at times, Keshav wished to have been an orphan instead.

It was 6:00 in the morning and Mr. Seth was starting to sweat in his grey jogging tracksuit. He decided to opt for a different path that day, a longer one to test his stamina which was well built by now, thanks to his wife who was determined to make sure he set foot out of the house at 5:30 sharp to lose those extra kilograms. Choosing the other route was a great decision taken by him because not only did it prove that Mr. Seth’s endurance had indeed been built well by now, but it also made him realize that the reason his student was always late was very well justified. That day, in the morning, on an empty street, on a cycle which was a size too big for a mere boy of 12, Keshav was pedalling from house to house distributing milk packets with the same hand that burned when the cold plastic touched the scale scars. Keshav was financing his own education while his dad was busy gambling and smoking weed.

When Keshav entered the classroom after Mr. Seth had written the names of all the planets in the solar system, he knew he would be punished yet again but this time showed his left hand to the muscular teacher to hit upon as he knew the right one could take no more. But instead of receiving a beating, Mr. Seth handed over a Mango Bite toffee to him and closed his hand, signalling him to take his seat. Neither did Mr. Seth tell anyone what he saw, nor did Keshav or any other child question him upon such an unusual treatment.

There are hundreds of other children like Keshav who have the will to study but don’t have supportive and understanding parents. They want their children to die in the same dump that they were born in. You don’t need to look for them, they would be a witness to your eyes in every corner picking up trash, selling morning newspapers on roadsides and serving tea in dhabas. Little do we realise that a negligible gesture to us by parents like being treated with a candy, if offered to them can prove to be enough to make their whole day.

  • The blooming flower

    The blooming flower

It is the story of a girl who turns her weakness into strength and work towards her parents dream to make them come true.

There was a girl named Avni. She was from a rich family. She was born in 1945 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. At that time, girls were not allowed to go to school because they were not promoted as much as boys. But his father was very supportive. He wanted his only daughter along with three sons to be educated and have primary education. She used to go to school and there was no other girl except the daughter of the head of their village. And her mother had died when she was born as she was the youngest. So she didn’t know any household works. She was married in a very young age when she was just a teenager at the age of 14. She was married to an 20- years- old boy Anil who worked in his fields.

She didn’t have any woman in her in-laws house. They were not rich either. His husband lived with his father and two brothers in that house which was her only house as per the society. The society believes that after marriage, a woman’s only home is her in-laws house and that is where she is believed to live the way her husband wants her to be. It was an arranged marriage so they took time to understand each other. She managed everything by herself. She learned to cook, learn doing household works and many such things that a married woman in India is believed to do. Four years after her marriage when she became 18 – years -old, she was expecting her first child.

She gave birth to a boy after nine months.  In that period of time, everyone wanted a boy so that their business is carried forward in the society.

But Avni was of a different opinion. She wanted a girl as her baby. One of the reason might be the fact that she missed the presence of any woman in her small world and the second was that she wanted women empowerment in her society. Second child of Avni was born after three years and it was a boy too. But she didn’t lose any hope for a girl. She wanted her to be the face of change. But it wasn’t possible with those sons. She knew how women have patience much more than boys.

Third time, it was a girl. She named her Nikita. She was a very gentle child. She was very beautiful, fair complexioned and a little naughty girl in her childhood. Her presence in that home gave positive vibes all around. She was growing up in that home under her parents’ guidance. Though Avni was an open minded lady who wanted progress of women in society, his husband  Anil wasn’t of such views. He was rather against these views and wanted all women in his society to remain under control of the men who he believed to be  stronger  gender than men.

Avni and Anil had spent more than fifteen years together but there was something that started developing in their relationship as all this was happening. As the ideas differed  and so did the  thoughts so one of them wanted her daughter to be treated like her other sons but he didn’t want so.

Anil wanted her daughter Nikita not to intervene in any of the matters that created tension in their marriage life and do what other girls were supposed to do then.

But this really didn’t mean that he didn’t love Nikita. He loved her more than any of his boys as is the bond between a father and her daughter. This is the relationship that requires deep understanding. Sometimes it’s not expressed as it should be but it is really an amazing feeling to be loved and cared by her father for a daughter. Nikita felt same for her father. And Anil felt the same too but that feeling remained unexpressed. Anil was a good father but he was bounded by the notions of the society. He was afraid of the outcomes of doing something exceptionally great for a girl in a male dominated society.

Nikita was twelve years old and she was in grade two in a primary school. Avni realized that there was something to be done for Nikita’s education.

She is not as educated as she should have been as per her wishes. Her sister lived in Ranchi. She was Anu. Anu’s daughter, Radha studied in a better school and was about the age of Nikita. But she was more educated than her and was in grade 5. This made a  huge difference to the education of Nikita and her knowledge too. Avni then decided to get her admitted in the same school as Radha. Anu was ready to get her the best education as her daughter was taught.

This created a difference between Avni and Anil. They lived together but their was so much difference in between their ideologies that Anil decided something. He thought of parting his ways of life, maybe this was what destiny wanted from them. He thought of leaving Avni and making her daughter and sons with him. Avni didn’t agree to it. She was ready to leave Anil but didn’t want to leave her children with him. Nikita was really disturbed by the way her parents were thinking. Was it because of her or there was something else that was disturbing their relationship. A relationship that was made about fifteen years back was at the verge of being destroyed for such a small reason. When the decision was confronted before Nikita and his elder brothers, they were really unhappy. They kept on thinking of some way to get out of such a situation. The whole family was disturbed. They stopped talking to each other while dining and didn’t even sit together.

When this decision  came out openly, Nikita and her brothers told their parents that they don’t want to live either with their mother or father after they will separate. And the reason was that three of them wanted to live with both Avni and Anil. They were consoled that nothing would be disturbed after their separation. Those young children were also able to realize that their family will be disturbed. Their life would be upside down. Hearing to such a decision, both Avni and Anil decided to give up the thought of their separation. They thought and talk to each other about why they were actually separating and had come to such a decision. Only the reason of Nikita’s education was their big concern. Then Anil and Avni decided to shift in Ranchi. This  is what Avni wanted. She wanted her children to have good education and have a better future than they would have got after getting education in that small village.

Anil sold all of his father’s property in the village, got the money and shifted to a rented home in Ranchi. There, he got a job and got his children admitted to a government school. Nikita graduated from a government college. That had very good education. After that, she became part of government college as a lecturer after her higher studies.  She then thought something to herself. After earning money, she decided to take the permission of the government and get a school opened in her native village. She opened a government school in her village and the neighboring villages too. She was happy to do so as she didn’t want girls like her to suffer and compromise for getting education. She became a successful teacher and became the face of change in her society as per her parent’s wishes. The family returned to the village after that and lived happily together.

  • LESSON AT THE BACKYARD

    LESSON AT THE BACKYARD

When we were small children, we enjoyed everything because we did what we really loved to do. This story tells how Advik learned about life’s lesson from his six years old daughter.

“Oh! Darn it,” he said as the tea spilled out of that busy morning cup. He went into the kitchen to take wiping cloth.

    Just then the phone rang.

“Now one more! Who calls so early in the morning!”, he slapped the cloth on the table and took quick steps towards his room.

    “Hello!” he softens his voice.

“Advik, this is to remind you that you have a meeting today with a client. Do come on time. And Sir will come today to check the project,” answered one of his colleagues from the other side.

“Ah, yes I remember. Well, thanks. I’ll be on time,” he replied. He closed his eyes tightly with his hands and took a deep breath.

“So much work to do. Well, it is the same thing every day.” He recollected his strength and started again.

It was nine in the morning. Monday made him wore a formal black pant and white shirt and grey coat over it. As he combed his hair, his eyes glued at a photograph of him holding a trophy.  A gentle smile touched his lips and his deep dark black eyes craved for that passed time.

“Papa, I am getting late for school,” shouted her six years old daughter, Mahira.

    “Five minutes, coming,” he replied.

He took his car keys and they both got out of the house and sat in the car.

“When will Mummy be home?” asked Mahira.

“On Sunday dear! And yes, today Aunt Renee will come to pick you up from school,” he said as he drove into the busy streets of the city.

“Yay!” She swung her arms. “ Today no crosswords. I will make mud castle in her backyard,” she said.

“Oh!NO, NO you will only get dirty.”

She did not pay attention to his words as her eyes bugged out when she saw a Disney theme restaurant.

She peeked out of the car. “Papa look, so beautiful. Please! We should go there today for the dinner,” she pleaded.

“Sorry Dear, maybe some other day.” He drove again.

Green light signalled. She narrowed her eyebrows and clenched her fists.

He dropped her at the school and went to his office. Today was an important day for him as his boss would approve projects assigned to employees.

“Hey Good morning!” said his colleague and friend Rohan as he shook hands with Advik. “Let’s go and review our projects.”

Walking down the stairs Rohan told Advik about one of their college friends.

    “Remember Farhan, who played guitar?”

“Ah! Yes…,” nodded Advik as he took the tea from the tea machinery. “What is he doing nowadays?”

“He plays guitar at parties and shows,” Rohan said as he took cappuccino for him.

“I think he should switch to some real business, not much he would earn like that,” said Advik as he opened a blue file and started reviewing his work.

“But it was really exciting,” said Rohan.

It was two in the afternoon when their boss came for project approval. After going through myriad ideas, the project lead went to some other employee.

A brooding expression occupied Advik’s face. He went to his cabin.

“Hey! Congratulations, you are the assistant head,” greeted Rohan. Advik listened with an absent air and kept glancing at the computer screen. He rolled a pen between his fingers.

    “Hey! Are you listening?”

“I wanted to be the project head instead. I worked really hard for it. Anyway,” he said dismally and kept the pen and again went to have a cup of tea.

The clock struck seven in the evening. He pulled down the car at Reene’s home.

“Welcome, Advik!” greeted Reene, who wore a crop top and lungi skirt and a green ethnic turban adorned her look.

    “Hi Reene, how are you?”

    “Wonderful,” she smiled.

    “You seem happy!”

“ Yes, Today I designed a beautiful gown.” She swung her arms. “You must see it,” she said and went into the kitchen.

“Where is Mahira?” His eyes searched for her.

    “At the backyard,” she replied.

“Ah, she never listens, getting dirty again in the mud,” he rolled his eyes and started moving towards the backyard.

He saw Mahira sitting on her knee and when she stepped aside, he saw a small, rough but beautiful mud castle.

    “WOW!”

“Papa!” she ran towards him. “See, I told you I would make a castle today. How is it?” her eyes twinkled.

He took her hands and dusted all the mud. “It is really good. Well done dear!”

“Wait, some things are left to do,” she returned.

Reene came and stood beside him.

“Here is your tea,” she said as she offered him a cup.

    “Thanks.”

Reene took out a beautiful peach gown from the box. “Look at this,” she said.

“Mesmerizing!” he said bug-eyed, “Your client will get mad at this.”

“No, it is for you, gift your wife,” she looked straight into his eyes.

“But Reene ..” he tried to say something.

“I’ll be happier if she will wear it,” she said.

He looked at her and took a deep sigh. “Alright, I will take it. Really, thanks for this,” he said and hugged her.

They both sat on a wooden chair.

“So how was your day?” she asked.

“I am assigned as assistant head for a big project. Loads of work to do tonight.”

Mahira leaned forward to make the tea. “Oh! Great, you should celebrate then,” she said.

Advik just gave a frail smile. He was looking at Mahira.  “Today she was supposed to learn tables and – ”

“Oh God! Don’t make me mad.” Reene rolled her eyes. “She is just a child now,” she said.

“Yes, but you -” Advik tried to say something.

“ You know children’s minds develop faster playing outdoor,” said Mahira.

“Really!” Advik narrowed his eyes. “Yeah! She seem happy here,” he said.

“Yes, because she is doing what she loves and that’s why she is enjoying,” she said as she gave the tea to Advik.

    He raised his eyebrows quizzically.

Reene lifted her chin.“ You know, when we were small children, we were always happy. We fought to get our favourite toys. Played all day long but didn’t get tired. We did what we loved. And now we wonder what is missing? Why is it boring and tiring!?” she said as she threw her hands out.

Advik listened to her staring at the green grass, his hands folded. He tilted his head and pressed his lips and nodded as she smiled.

“I finished it,” Mahira came running.

    “Beautiful,” they both praised her.

“Now we can go home, Papa.”

Advik kneaded his eyebrows, loosen his tie and started rubbing his chin and said,“ Who will cook food, I am tired. I think we should go to this new Disney theme restaurant Reene. Will you join us Mahira?”

  • Is being Disappointed Necessary?

    Is being Disappointed Necessary?

Nupur’s sister Payal has suffered heartbreak as her boyfriend Rahul broke up with her for another girl. Nupur encounters a similar situation as she was going to her college. This makes her wonder if being dejected over loss of people in life, is necessary.

My elder sister Payal was crying. She  loved a guy named Rahul. They knew each other through a common friend. They had been together for 2 years and were happy in each other’s company.

Rahul was accepted by Maa and Dadda as well. ” You cannot get a boy like Rahul in your life.” They used to say.

But it happened that he began to date another girl named Sheetal who was his classmate in college.

One day he texted Payal didi,

‘ Nowadays circumstances are not permitting us to be together. You’re so busy in your internship that you have forgotten me and our relationship. So I have decided to break up with you. I have Sheetal now. She’s loves me a lot and  gives me priority unlike you. Goodbye forever.”

“Such a childish reason to have broken up.” I remarked then I counselled Payal didi,” If he can’t understand your priorities he has no right to love you. Forget him and focus on your internship. My friend’s sister was also in the same phase but she did a mistake. She was grossed in the thought of her ex that she went into depression. After all, career will make you self sufficient.”

“But Nupur, how can he do this to me.” She said with a sob.

Didi went on crying. I was not able to understand what was going on in her mind. Perhaps it was her broken love which was pestering her every now and then.

Maa-Dadda also counselled Didi. She had decided to go to work the next day. I knew one of her friend Shruti who went for internship with Payal Didi. I told her the situation and asked her to take care of Didi.

“I can understand your concern and as a friend I’ll take care of Payal. You need not worry.”

Next day I had to go to college. It was a winter morning and I become lazy during this time of the year. After receiving numerous reprimands of Dadda on time management, I left home for taking a rickshaw to the Metro station. After security check I rushed towards the platform. Train had reached. Since I was getting late I did not wait for the next train and boarded the waiting train. In that haste, I realized that I had boarded into the general carriage instead of ladies’ carriage. But it was so crowded that I gave up on the idea to move towards ladies’ carriage.

So I was standing at the door. Opposite to me there was a man perhaps he was about 20 years of age. He wore  jacket and jeans. He was talking with someone on phone.

“I have not made Meenakshi’s film. Please make her understand…”

“You were my best buddy, best bro. I thought you will understand my concern. I thought you had full faith on me when others did not. I didn’t expect this from you.” Then perhaps the call disconnected as he showed frustration. He bit his lips and looked up. It seemed to me he was hiding his tears. It’s something serious, I thought.

    Then another call came.

“I swear, I have not made that video. Meenakshi’s my friend as well. Why would I do this to her? Her parents are making false allegations.”

“No please listen babes..” That call disconnected. He hung his head in despair.

I could make up what might have happened. Perhaps someone made an obscene video of one of his friends and this guy was falsely accused.

I felt pity for this guy who was really disheartened by the recent events.

“Shall I talk to him? ” I asked myself,”  No, It would be like poking my nose in other’s business.” So I remained quiet.

I reached my destination. I hurriedly alighted the train, got out of the station and took a rickshaw to reach my college.

I had my Zoology lecture. That teacher is very strict in matters of punctuality. Luckily she was busy in some other work so I couldn’t face her scoldings. She came 5 minutes later and took the class.

My next class was after 2 hours. All my friends were absent that day. So I roamed around the college and went to the Amphitheatre of my college. There I saw the dancers of the Western Dance Society were practicing. I thought to pass my time watching their dance.

I saw a guy whom I had seen before. That jacket, those jeans. Oh! He is the one who I met in the Metro! I recollected. He was a dance instructor. Then I saw their dance. I noticed absolutely no sign of disappointment or worry on the face of the instructor. Despite the fact that he was wrongly accused and his friends had no faith on him. He was merely focussed on his work. I witnessed the dance and also the dedication with which the guy was doing his job.

Nobody could have thought what the instructor had gone through.

He taught for 2 hours. Then I saw it was time for my lecture. I was going back and the guy was also leaving until he noticed me.

“Hey! Did I see you in the Metro today?” He greeted me with a smile.

“Oh yes yes!” Even I gave a smile.

    “Are you in this college?”

    “Yes.”

    “Which course?”

    “Zoology, 1st year.”

“Okay. It was nice meeting you.” He shook hands with me and we both parted ways.

While I was going towards my class I was pondering over that instructor’s behaviour. I was filled with awe, the way he greeted me with a smile and his focus towards instructing the dancers as if nothing had happened. Then I thought about Payal Didi who was so dejected at the very thought of Rahul leaving her for some other girl. She was not willing to do anything and was getting depressed every moment. She went for work because we convinced her to. Salute to his diligence!

I returned home after the class having with me an example of how work is everything. I’ll tell her that “Work is Worship.”

People may come and go, they’ll try to satisfy their needs. It is important to be strong and move on.

  • FRIENDSHIP BARS RELIGION

    FRIENDSHIP BARS RELIGION

The story revolves around before Partition India when it was called a “Golden Bird”. All communities lived with harmony, without any conflicts. There was no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste or creed.

There was a village, Solapur of around 50,000 population and spread over an area of 50-80 acres at the border of Rajasthan. This village truly reflected the concept of a Harmonious India.

The story is about the friendship of two boys, Aslam and Rahul. Aslam belonged to a lower class Muslim family. His father was a semi-skilled labour. He worked as a labour at farms during crop season and otherwise, as a potter. Whatever he earned daily went into buying basic necessities for the family. While Rahul belonged to an upper class Hindu family. His father was a priest at the only temple of the village. That’s why, his family was a reputed family and everyone respected them. Whatever marriage, puja or function was organised.. he was invited there to perform required rituals.

Rahul and Aslam were fast friends.. lived as if were brothers and not just friends. Studied in the same government school and also in the same class. Both were very good at studies. Both were regular at each other’s home. Rahul would sometime even call Aslam’s mother, Ammi. Such was the cordial relationship between their families. The school did not provide senior secondary higher education, so they couldn’t study there after their high school. Both had grown up together, but now had to part ways as Rahul’s father could afford higher secondary education but not Aslam’s father due to poor financial conditions. Rahul went away but Aslam was left behind. This disturbed him and his family a lot.

Rahul’s father couldn’t see it as he knew that he had great potential to do something in life and would surely become something in life.

He knew that Aslam was determined to study. So he promised Aslam to provide higher education and thus, asked his father to send him out of the village. At first, he seemed hesitant but knowing his son’s potential, he agreed.

Rahul and Aslam went on to succeed well in their lives with Rahul owning a diamond jewellery business and Aslam becoming a reputed, A grade officer in tax department.

Once, Rahul got in a scam of tax evasion and came under scrutiny of the tax department. He was presented before Aslam. At first, none of them knew about the identity of each other. But as soon as they faced each other, both were elated and just hugged each other. Then Rahul narrated the whole incident that how he had been dragged into a fake scandal so that his reputation in the market is destroyed. Aslam knew about the honesty of his childhood friend and believed him a lot.

A committee was set-up to look into the matter and at the last, I was found that Rahul’s accountant was responsible for the whole incident and that he had been doing this for a long time. He fired him at that moment and thanked Aslam for his support and trust.

Aslam said,” Don’t be grateful to me. Your father helped me build my future. It is my responsibility to protect his son and protect his image if he is honest. I have just let off the debt I had of your father on me and my family. Thanks a lot to you actually. “

  • Believing Yourself

    Believing Yourself

This story relates to mostly all of us at some point in our life when we would have felt so low but this story would help you fight against that fear and will help you to trust yourself. This is the story of very simple girl Kavita. Being the youngest of all siblings she was pampered by everyone in her family. Anything she demanded was presented in front of her.

Although she was a daughter of a small shopkeeper but her father was very supportive and never let her feel inferior in any manner but he had only one dream for her was that he wanted to see his daughter dressed up in Police Officer’s uniform but he never imposed his dream on her. As she grew up she also decided to be an Officer of Police.

As she grew expectations of her family also grew as she was a bright student and everyone thought that she will become an Officer and make her family proud. But slowly and gradually things changed and she became more inclined towards sports. She gave importance to her studies too but couldn’t give 100%  attention to her education.

One day she went to a Saint with her family who had a lot of faith in him but she believed in herself and not in Saints. That day he insulted her very much in front of her family members because she simply said to him that, “I believe in making my own fortune and I know that the god is within me and he will help me whenever I need him. I don’t believe in just lying back in the couch and waiting for a miracle to happen instead I will give my best.”

Listening to all these words he got angry but didn’t show it and insulted her by saying that she can’t do anything in her life and becoming an Officer will never happen in her life. That day she decided to make her own destiny and prove to that Saint wrong especially in front of her family who gave up on her to be an Officer. So, she started to study harder and made her ficus clear. Her father believed in her and through his support and her hard work she became a reputed Police Officer and proved everyone wrong and that Saint too.

She faced failures too but those failures couldn’t stop her from reaching that point in her life where she wanted to be. So, this story just proved that having belief and confidence in yourself can take you to those heights where you would have imagined yourself to be.

    Always believe in yourself.

  • This Too Shall Pass

    This Too Shall Pass

There comes a point of time in our life when we believe that we are incapable of handling our problems. We think that we are stuck in a situation which we can’t get out of; A maze of sorts, which doesn’t have an exit. At this time, we should realize that every moment, be it good or bad, passes by soon enough. Though all of us are given our share of problems, no problem persists for long. We need to deal with them with courage, with perseverance, with hope.

“I’m sorry, but I’m afraid there is nothing I can do now,” said the doctor. My face turned pale on hearing this. “Your eardrum is going to rupture, and unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to stop it from happening.” The doctor looked at me, eyes full of pity and helplessness.

“Why did this have to happen to me?” I thought, feeling enervated and weakened by the tremendous pain in my left ear. “Why did it have to happen now?”  I couldn’t believe what the doctor said. The ground seemed to have been pulled from under my feet. I desperately looked around the clinic. The clock showed the time as 10 o’clock on that fateful Tuesday night. Conveniently, the clinic had a pharmacy section, where stacks of medicine were stored. “There must be something in here, some sort of over-the-counter painkiller, some sort of panacea that could ease the pain and prevent my eardrum from rupturing.” To my utter disappointment, there wasn’t any that could do the same. On the plus side, the doctor offered a mild painkiller to somewhat alleviate my pain.

The day had started off on a good note; It was a typical school day; I attended school like on any other day, met my friends, learned my lessons and came back home.

Nothing was out of place, except for the slight cold that I had caught the day before. Come evening, it was as if fate had turned the tables on me. Before one could even bat an eyelid, the peaceful, mundane day took a tumultuous turn. Around 7 p.m., I started feeling a sharp pain in my ear. Ignoring it initially, I went about doing my work. That was the first mistake. Before long, the intensity of the pain increased to such an extent, that I couldn’t stop tears flowing down my cheeks. My parents rushed me to the clinic nearest to our home.

The dialogue with the doctor had me feeling helpless and vulnerable. My parents paid for the medicine, and thanked the doctor. As soon as we got into the car to head home, I sat on the backseat with my mom, took the painkiller, and put my head in her lap. She stroked my hair, and consoled me, telling me repeatedly to be strong, and that this will pass soon. I cried and cried till I fell asleep. When we reached home, I feebly walked to my room, and collapsed onto my bed without bothering to change. My mom came in my room, and put a towel on my pillow. I slept on my side, with my left ear on the pillow.

As the night went on, the pain intensified. With the passing hours, blood from my ear dripped onto the pillow, soaking the towel with blood and tears, in the process. Thanks to the painkiller, there were moments where I feel asleep, but the pain was so unbearable that it woke me up at irregular intervals. My mom didn’t leave my side that night. Whenever I would wake up, my mom would whisper words of consolation and try to make me fall asleep.

Time after time, she would repeat her phrase, “This too will pass.”

These four words were what kept me going, what kept me strong. And she was right; those horrible moments; where I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, where the world seemed to be collapsing on me, did pass. When I woke up in the morning, the pain in my ears had reduced drastically, to the point where I almost didn’t notice it. My pillow was soaked in dried up blood and tears, a dark gift of the terrible night. I sat up in my bed, and was greeted by my mom, who was carrying a tray with breakfast for me. “Thank you mom, for last night,” I said to her. “I couldn’t do it without you and your kind words.” She smiled, and sat down to have breakfast with me.

  • FROM VEGAS TO VEGAN

    FROM VEGAS TO VEGAN

This story is about two friends meeting after four years. Vishnu stays in India while Nitesh is returning from Las Vegas. Vishnu is surprised by knowing that his friend has converted himself to vegan that too in Vegas.

It’s been half an hour since I am waiting for Nitesh, here, in our both favorite restaurant ‘The Khaanpaan’. As usually he is late again. The day is bright out here, the same I could remember as it was on our graduation day. It has been four years since that day, and even four years when I and Nitesh were together. That’s too long, but yes, we are meeting anyhow. Nitesh is coming here directly from the airport, he is returning from Las Vegas. After our Engineering he got placed in some IT company of the gambling city and I remained here. He was the most intelligent student from our batch. I was proud to be his friend. Before I tell you more about him let me tell you one thing, Nitesh was the first person who converted my vegetarian stomach into a meatatarian. It was not forceful but it was on my own wish, as I lost a bet of getting a girl’s phone number to him. The chicken was the first stuff which I ever ate that too in ‘The Khaanpaan’. That was the day when I got converted into omnivorous from herbivorous. Initially, it was difficult for me to accept, I always felt like I have got converted into some another religion, forcefully. But, the pleasant taste of chicken made me forget everything and I happily accepted my convergence. I never told this to my family as I belong to a Brahmin family, where eating animal is prohibited.

Since that day, it became our every weekend’s plan to visit ‘The Khaanpaan’ and get some chicken. Chicken tikka, chicken paneer, chicken tandoori, chicken lollypop, chicken this chicken that was on the top of the choice list every time. ‘’You give me one whole chicken, I will eat it all, including its bone”. Nitesh used to say every time. Chicken is the reason why I selected this restaurant for our meeting. Let him come then we shall recreate those moments.

“Hey Vishnu” I heard Nithesh calling my name. I turned back and it was him.

“Wow, you maintained your record of being late always,” I said happily. “Hahahaha, what should I do when all American flights are delayed’’ he said. “Well Vishnu, do you think this is the way we meet after four years?’’. I stood to embrace him.

As I moved forward to hold him even he moved forward but instead of holding him I punched him in his stomach strongly. “What was this for?’’ he asked. “Incase to remind you, the reason of my convergence”. I use to do this during college occasionally when we met. I do this for fun but not intentionally. He laughed, “you, still consider me the reason?’’. He said sitting on the chair. We both laughed the moment very hard. I sat after him and asked the waiter to come. “two special chai’’, I ordered. “Ahh! Thank you…but one without milk.” He changed the order. ’’So how are your days going with Infosys?’’ he asked me . “great…..it’s good to be there. Good salary and good learning environment even good girls around too. What about you?’’ I turned the question to him. He laughed and being to answer “Well! My bond with the company has come to an end, it was a great experience to be a part of a famous MNC in the Vegas. I am looking forward to work here in India”. He said. “How is Las Vegas?” I asked eagerly. “Pretty girls everywhere, lots of money in the city, very beautiful in the midnight. In short it’s amazing. We should once go together. ” He said. “Of course, who will not like to. ” I said.

The conversation started with our professional life, moved to personal life and further to the memories of college. People across our table started to look at us the way we were laughing. We were as if we are 10 years old children meeting each other since ages. Though we were meeting after four years but it just took four seconds to form the same bond which we used to have once. He was same as I saw him last time that made me proud. I was happy meeting him, even he too looked happy.

An hour passed talking. “Shall we eat something or just spend time talking?’’ he suggested.

‘’Of course, I was about to say that too, what would you like to have?’’ I asked while asking the waiter for order. “what will you like to have, sir?’’ the waiter said anxiously. “Chicken lollypop and chicken biryani, both two and rest I will say later”. “Wait wait!’’ Nitesh interrupted me “Vishnu, I no more eat chicken, I won’t mind if you eat. I shall order something else for myself’’. What the hell he just said right now, has he gone crazy. “What!! Are you kidding? That won’t be true. Come on, go on let’s eat it.” I said astonishingly. ‘’No, it’s true.’’ He said to me and turned to the waiter and said “we will call you in sometimes’’. “No problem sir’’ the waiter said and moved. I was continuously staring at him as if he has commented on my belief. “Vishnu, it’s been 2 years, for now, I have turned vegan’’ he said. I was completely speechless, for a moment I thought if he is the original Nitesh. “You are saying that now you are a vegetarian?’’ I said expressionlessly. “No, I am saying now I am a vegan’’ he corrected me. “Vegan? You got to be kidding. Being vegetarian was fine but are you saying vegan, what’s the problem with you? Do you have any health issue? That’s not possible, you cannot do this to you.’’ I said in one breath angrily.

“Cool down, I am fine. I know very well what I am doing” he said.

For me it was like, he was the one who took me to the brothel for the first time, we both selected prostitute for us and after everything, I got to know that the one which I selected is an AIDS patient.

I got very upset, the reason why I am omnivorous no more exits. I can’t imagine one who is coming from Vegas is talking in this manner. This might be the craziest thing happening in the world. Instead of getting addicted to drugs my friend has turned vegan, that too in Vegas. I don’t know why I felt that I have been fooled. He had not even forced me that day to eat chicken, now I feel like my best friend has betrayed me. This is hard to accept for me.

“Vishnu, what are you thinking? What’s the matter? ” he asked. I didn’t reply him. “And this is why I ordered the tea without milk, I feel happy on my decision. I am proud that I am vegan.” He said. “But how all this happened, had anybody forced you?’’ I said trying to be normal. I tried to control my internal anger to know the reason.

“All these happened in Vegas two year before. I visited a poultry farm to install some software device” he was speaking and I began to hear it patiently. “There I saw a group of hens inside fence pecking grains and communicating to each other, the same way we humans communicate. Meanwhile, a man entered the fence region and picked one hen from the group of many and took him out. As rest other hens ran behind that man in order to save her, but they weren’t able to do that. ”

His words were getting my attention. “Right after that, there was hustle bustle in the hen’s society. All the hens began to run here and there. Everyone cried.” He stopped speaking.  “So what? That’s how we get chicken in our kitchen. That can’t make you stop eating a hen.” I said.  “No Vishnu, that’s not the point, imagine we both are sitting here and having a nice conversation and some other creature come and pick me to eat, how will you feel knowing the next turn is yours? You can’t even save me or yourself.” He explained.

“Have you seen the red colored comb on the head of hen? What does it look like to you?” he asked. I kept quite. “Don’t you think they look like the crown, the same which the kings used to were of their head?” I was totally confused for a moment.

He looked crazy. “God had gifted them the crown by their birth. God has made them born kings and we are killing the kings appointed by the gods, aren’t we going against the god? In fact, the rooster is a vahana of ‘Bahuchara Mata’ the Hindu goddess.” he explained.

“But was Vegas a right place?” I asked. “You don’t need to see the place to awaken your mind, it may happen anywhere, just like some important discoveries were made in the bathroom. You know that too.” He said

“Screw you man, you are not same as you were. Something is wrong with you.” I said in order to prove him wrong. Though his explanation was correct but I was not ready to accept it. Today a Brahmin boy is no more Brahmin just because of him and he has suddenly converted himself to Brahmin. This thing was hurting badly in my heart. But my blame was worthless. I can’t stop remembering the first time when I ate chicken with him. “You could have converted to vegetarian then why vegan?” I asked. “I decided not to use any animal’s product because I don’t want to harm any animal only for my requirement.” He said. “What’s wrong with the milk, Nitesh? I don’t appreciate what you are doing.” I said.

“Come on Vishnu, only a child has full right on mother’s milk. If this is applicable to humans then why not for animals? How can I drink milk which is the right of a calf, the cow gives milk for her child, not to human’s child? You must think about it.” He said. 2.8 million Animals are killed daily only in America for the human requirement. Can you believe it? ” he asked. I said nothing.

“Little silkworms for silk, small bees for honey, elephants for ivory, lions for nails, snakes for skin are killed, don’t they have right to live. God has created man as a most intelligent creature in the nature but we are misusing are power. We are using it against god, we destroying the nature, for which we don’t have any right.” He continued speaking. “You can’t stay selfish. You can’t stay foolish. You can’t keep killing”. He said. “But what about those animals, which you have killed in the past?” I asked. “Yes, I will always regret about it. I did that in innocence. It can’t change the past but I in future I will never repeat it. I know I cannot bring their lives back but now I cannot take their life too.” He said.

“It all didn’t happen in just one day, it took time. Previously four animals were killed per week because of me. I tried bringing the numbers down every month. And now no animals are killed for me. ” He added.

“But what about me, it was you the one who made me addicted to it.” I said sadly. “I am sorry for that. I know that was the mistake which I committed. But the past is past incident it can’t be changed. You turned animal eater because of me. Some animals are killed only because of me just because you are a animal eater. I will regret it. I am sorry.” He continued “do you know sometime this makes me sad.” His eyes began to become wet. He was about to cry. “No Nitesh, I am sorry for talking like that. You are not the reason behind me. Please don’t blame yourself.”I said. “I can’t accept that, Vishnu. I should have not done that to you.” He said in the worried voice. “Forget the past dude, it cannot be changed, I am proud that my friend is a vegan. In fact, you are the first person whom I know is completely vegan. You are inspiration for us.” I said.

Today, I have again followed the steps of Nitesh and I am a vegan too. That days Nitesh’s word touched my heart deeply. Even I suggest you, try being vegan it will be a good feeling.

  • The Helpful Man

    The Helpful Man

This story is about an old retired man who had lost everything in the war including his son and his family, so he saw happiness in helping people and never hesitated to come forward.

“Do you need help?” asked an old man from across the street

“No, No it’s heavy, I’ll manage” I told him.

“Come on, I’m old doesn’t mean I can’t help.” While saying this, he walked towards me and helped me lift my furniture to my new apartment.

I recently got transferred to a new place, as a part of my promotion.

New city, new people. All strangers. Somebody coming forward and offering a help was a good start, I felt.

After his generous attitude, I offered him a cup of tea, as a token of thanks, but he refused and left. The next morning while strolling in my lawn, I saw him again – sitting on a chair in the sun. I rushed towards him and thanked him for the previous day and asked him if he would like to accompany me to the market as I was not familiar to the area, to which he happily agreed. While shopping I saw him helping almost everybody that he possibly could. On our way back I asked him why he was so kind to everyone. He replied that this was all that kept him busy and away from his thoughts.

Speaking the last word his eyes filled with tears but he somehow did not let them roll over his cheek. Seeing this I did not question him any further but wanted to ask many more questions about him and his journey.  Maybe this is not the proper time, I said to myself and hence kept it all together.

The following days saw him sharing his thoughts with me over a cup of tea, frequent meetings and sun-baths. This continued for some time. He would accompany me to the market, the store, helped me running errands etc. until we became very good friends.

One-day I invited him over lunch to my place. He was reluctant at first but agreed on me forcing. Post lunch I asked him about his life, his work, his family. The next moment saw him speaking his heart out. He had lost his son, his daughter-in-law and his grandson to the war and was left with no support system.

Wars always leave a deep and lasting imprint on societies. It affects not only those participating, but also the innocent and unconnected. The memory of death leaves us shattered, as it did to him.

Probably lifting my furniture by me would have reminded him of his grandson, around the same age he would have been then.  Life is not fair to everyone. While we complaint over small day-to-day needs, instances like these reminds us that our plight is hardly anything.

It is now like a home affair with him. Regular meet ups, quality times – talking and philosophy-ing, sometimes doing literally nothing. Just enjoying each other’s presence. I found a companion in this new city, and he, a family.

  • Turning one’s weakness into strength

    Turning one’s weakness into strength

It is about a woman who manages her husband’s business after his death with the help of her daughters.

This is the story many Indian women may relate to. The story of Ranjana Mehta who was married in one of the richest families of Surat, Gujarat. They had their own company in Gujarat, Ahmedabad. She already had a daughter named Naina. His husband wanted a boy this time as Ranjana was expecting a baby. Their second child was also a daughter. They named her Anu. They wanted a boy so that someone could carry on their business and expand it later. The elder daughter  Naina was three years older than her.

Both were admitted to a very good school. Naina was an intelligent girl. She was a good speaker who used to participate and excel in every debate taking place in her school. Though Naina being first child was loved more by her parents, she always supported her younger sister as well. She knew that Anu’s performance was always underestimated. She wasn’t as intelligent as Naina. She was rather interested in her creativity. Her potential in arts was appreciated by her teachers but not by her parents.   But Naina always trusted her potential and helped  her a lot in studies. Anu was interested in business as well. In every vacations, she devoted time in watching lectures of young and successful entrepreneurs. She had great marketing skills.

It was the time of their summer vacation. Naina was in 12th standard and Anu in 9th standard. Their father was returning from his business tour from Australia to India by his chartered plane. The plane crashed due to engine failure. Nobody in the plane could survive. This news shocked everyone. It made headlines in the country. The family went through a heavy distress. Her mother, Ranjana was left helpless all alone in the entire world of mean people. She thought to herself that how could she continue among selfish people without anybody’s support.

She took help of her brother who was good at business.

Though she herself had a great knowledge of how to work in the business since she was the owner of half of the shares of her company.

She helped his husband in the business and had learned a lot in that. Her brother helped her but with his selfish motives. He wanted some of the property from her sister’s wealth. His greed increased gradually. It was time to throw him out of the business. Ranjana did the same. She took over the business and became the head of the company. She started doing the business in her own way. It was too difficult to manage home and the business at the same time.

Anu had great knowledge of business. It was what she took interest in when she had been to London. She had the entrepreneurial aspect in. She always observed how her father did that and manage everything without any faults. Seeing her mother helpless, she started helping her in business. Naina supported them too and started learning as well as practicing the marketing and business skills.  Anu and Naina became the backbone of the company run by his father some years ago.

At a point in life when their father died, there was no hope that the company would exist and the business will exist. They just wanted to give up. But it was Ranjana who believed in herself. She worked the hardest to keep up the dreams of his husband and his name still alive by the name of the company which was ‘Mehta’s corporates’. Since her daughters helped her a lot in continuing the business run by his father, the company was renamed as ‘Mehta daughter’s corporates’. It was supported under Mrs. Mehta’s guidance as had been under Mr. Mehta’s supervision by all the workers and the corporate companies.

The business continued by the two daughters and their husbands later on made a great landmark in the history.

The profits were more than double and triple to what company was gaining, all showed signs of progress and both the daughters of Mrs. Ranjana Mehta lived peacefully with each other. The love for each other was stronger than the hatred and jealousy that grows among the sons of a rich man for the property and share in their father’s will.

The time and society has changed now. It’s not the time when girls used to cover their faces and were believed to do only the household works. They can now manage their professional as well as personal life in a balanced way. A man can only go and earn money but it’s a woman who manages everything with such an ease. Never underestimate anyone for what one blocks. It’s better to motivate one for one’s strength and inspire him/ her work for a better future. One’s knowledge can enlighten entire world want it is once noticed at the right time and in a right way.

    Stay motivated stay inspired.’
