  • Ideal General

Once upon a time, there was a jungle near the kingdom of Raja Shantanu. In the jungle, on one tree, the crow’s king and queen used to live. They used to be a very happy couple. Wherever they went, they used to go together. They also used to eat and drink together.

Once, they were both flying above Raja Shantanu’s Palace. At that time, the food for His Majesty was being made. Colorful, delicious food was being placed on their plates.

“Oh wow!! My queen, see how delicious that food looks,”, said the crow to his wife.

“Yes, I am watching. But what can we do? We cannot do anything other than watch this tasty food. Look how tasty that fried fish looks! It will be fun eating that,” the crow’s wife said while looking at the fish plate.

“That’s true. But what good is it to gaze upon something we cannot consume?”

“Yes, you are right, dear. How stupid we are. We are so unlucky that we cannot even get one small thing.”

Crow observed his wife, who was deeply contemplating something. He knew exactly what his wife was feeling. But what could he do? He sighed helplessly.

The couple was preparing to go food hunting the following day.

The crow then exclaimed, “Dear! We should consume the fried fish from the palace that we observed yesterday.”

“My king, why are you fretting over it? We should tell this to our general.”

Hearing his wife crow, he questioned why he was still worrying about it from the previous evening. But didn’t even think that his soldiers could do it easily. He was so thrilled that he immediately called the general.

The general bowed and replied, “Yes, your majesty, you called me.”

“See here, general, last night we saw very delicious food in the palace.”, Crow said.

“Then what would you like, sir?”

“We wish to have that meal.”

The general responded, “Your wish will be completed soon, my lord; please do not worry; I will personally go to bring the meal,” after being informed of this. By declaring that this general took flight with eight soldiers and headed for Raja Shantanu’s Palace.

The general entered the palace and looked around.

“You all go sit on the kitchen roof”, the general ordered his soldiers.

The general was contemplating strategy as he sat with his soldiers.

“Yes, then pay attention, my brave soldiers; nobody will give us this food, even if we beg for it. Remember that we are here to get food for the king. We will only get it if we snatch it, but we cannot do that as the king’s army is very powerful. His soldiers are guarding the kitchen. And everyone knows how much they hate us crows. People are alarmed when they see our faces.”

The general then made an effort to grab the attention of the soldiers serving under the king. The cook noticed the general at the same time. He left the food and went after him. The other eight soldiers were prepared to do their jobs as well. All the crows seized every morsel they could when the dinner plate fell to the ground. All this happened so fast that people near the plate were just standing there like statues.

The general, on the other hand, grew weary while flying, but he was pleased that his plan had succeeded. He realized he could not get out of the palace. He let the cook and the soldiers catch him because he did not want to end up dead. Crow’s general was brought to the king by the cook.

“Look, Lord, I have brought the sinner whose sin no one can pardon.”

    “What sin?”, asked the king

“This crow, my lord, is the sinner.”

    “A crow and a sinner?”

“My lord does not consider him to be a common crow; he committed a serious sin.”

    “What crime did he commit?”

“He dirtied your meal and let his friends eat it. What could possibly be a greater sin than that?”

“What did you just do, Crow?”

“Your majesty, I am the crows’ general. Our king wanted to eat the food prepared for you. I did all this to complete his wish. I am prepared to pay a price for my wrongdoing.

“Oh wow! General, you have great courage! You did not even give thought to your life in order to fulfill your king’s wish.”

The crow general remarked, “My king, every soldier’s objective is to fulfill his duty.”

“Excellent! I am so glad I got to meet you, Crow General. I am glad to let you go because I respect your courage.”

King’s statement stunned everyone in the room. As soon as Crow General was released, he took off in a flight.

  • UNNECESSARY CONCERN

There lived a washerman named Karpoorpatak in Gujarat. He had a donkey which carried loads of clothes for him, and a dog which guarded his house at night. One night the washerman and his wife were sleeping comfortably when a thief burgled their house. The dog and the donkey both were fastened by a chain to a stake in the courtyard. As soon as the donkey noticed the thief  breaking into the house, he said ,”Look ,friend! A thief is burgling the house of our master .”  “So what !” said the dog indifferently. “Fool ! Start barking loudly and wake up our master so that  he  could save his belongings from being stolen,” said the donkey angrily, ” now do you think it is my duty to explain to you your responsibilities? Why has the master kept you as his pet? Why  has the master kept you as his pet? Why do you think does the master feed you bread and milk everyday?”

”  Brother, donkey! Please don’t concern yourself about my responsibilities ,” said the dog ,” it is not proper to interfere unnecessarily and bully someone. Are you not aware how I got the House of my master day and night and how ungrateful my master is he has become so careless about me now that he does not doesn’t even give me food in time I have decided that I shall not perform my duties until my master has has stood some laws and that is just because he doesn’t care for me he considers me I’m a burden because he hasn’t borne any loss for a long time .Someone has a correctly said that the master doesn’t give a servants due unless he himself lands into some kind of problem.”

The dog ‘ s argument irritated the donkey .He  said , ” O  ungrateful one ! Listen ! A servant , who , puts up his demand before his master in the time of need,  is never considered loyal. You are contemplating your own profits and losses when our master is going into to land into trouble .” Then the donkey said again with bloodshot eyes ,” All right! You may  shirk your duties and responsibilities,. but I am not one who would remain a silent spectator at such a crisis.  I am going to awaken my master,” and saying this the donkey began braying loudly. The harsh sound produced by the donkey disturbed the sleep  of the washerman. He became very angry. He came out with a staff in his hand and began beating the donkey mercilessly . He beat  the donkey so much that his staff broke and  the donkey also died. Having narrated the story Karatak said, “Brother! This is the reason why I say that one must not act in haste and without thinking. It’s not advisable to interfere with others. Our duty lies in serving our king. We search for a prey and assuages his hunger first; and what we get is only in the form of leftovers. That’s all .Here lies our limit.”

“Anyway,”  said  Damanak, “Let us go and attend our king ; let’s see what borders him ,”saying this Damanak  went to the den of the lion and prostrated himself before him. Seeing Damanak the lion said  very affectionately, ” Why Damanak ! Where have you been all these day ?  “My Lord ! You are king of this forest. We  are very ordinary creatures .You hardly needed us. You seldom remember us, but we always remember you .” “No, no, Damandak ! You are son of our minister. How can I forget you? I have engaged you as my attendant for the only reason that you are son of my minister.” You have been our benefactor for generations together. I cannot thank you enough   for all that you have done for us. We always look for an opportunity to find favour in your eyes.”  “Yes, I agree with what you say,”  said the lion. The lion was indeed impressed. He  said, ” Minster, You are really very scholarly. What you say gives me a ray of hope. A minister like you should always remain with me.”

“What you say  is correct, my lord. A king and his minister should never part with each other .But I would like to ask you a question if it doesn’t bother you.” “Yes ,yes ,do you ask,”   said the lion. “Lord ! You had gone out to drink water from the river, but you returned without drinking water. What was the reason ?” “Yes, your observation is correct .But unfortunately I could not find someone trustworthy with whom I could share the secret.” “You don’t  consider me also suitable for this?” ” No ,no , it’s not that.” ” Then ,in that case, you can share the secret with me .””Yes,yes ,I trust you. Listen-in fact ,I am afraid ,some very dangerous animal has entered this forest.  I have heard the thunderous roar of that animal on the bank of the river. Perhaps he is destined to rule this forest in future. Because he is capable of  shaking the whole of the forest with his thunderous roar.” ” What are you saying ,my lord?” “I am telling you the truth. It’s not difficult to asses the might of the animal with those thunderous roar the whole of the forest begins to shake .Personally I am of the view that we must abandon the forest now.” “My lord ! I too heard the thunderous roar, but leaving one’s homeland is not as simple as you think. Elders have said that brother,  wife servant, community ,wisdom and self confidence are put to test only when there is a challenge.”

“Damanak ! I have explained to you my problem. I don’t know what is going to happen now,” “My lord! You would not have become nervous ,had you been worried .But you need not worry so long as we are with you. We are brothers, shall manage the situation. Please don’t be ill an ease, leave it us to unravel the mystery.” “Yes, yes, do everything you brothers can .From my side you two are absolutely free.” “Thank you, my lord! With your blessings we shall return only after we have traced his enemy.” ” Brother! This is politics. Politics says that it’s no sin even if one has to tell lies to make the king happy. It is necessary to be brave and wise if one wants to oblige someone. You may not be aware, but I know the reason why our king is so frightened.” “And what’s that reason?” “In fact there is a bullock who lives along the bank of the river. Our king has only heard him bellowing; he has not yet seen him and that is the reason he is so scared.” “If it was as simple as that, you should have made the king aware of it. What is the use of keeping him worried?” Damanak said, “Brother! No one is going to honor us if we solve a problem without ant difficulty. How will the king know that we are wise ministers? Our politics says that a king should not be allowed to become free from fear. And if you commit this kind of mistake you too will suffer like the cat did.”

“What’s the story?” “Listen, I shall tell you the story.”

The Saga of Emperor Ashoka: From Conquest to Compassion

Once upon a time, in ancient India, there lived a mighty emperor named Ashoka. He was the grandson of the great Mauryan Emperor Chandragupta and son of Emperor Bindusara. This historical epic follows the incredible journey of Ashoka, from a fierce warrior to a compassionate ruler.

Ashoka was born in 304 BCE, and from a young age, he displayed remarkable military prowess and strategic thinking. He was known for his exceptional skills in warfare and his desire to expand the Mauryan Empire. Ashoka’s father, Emperor Bindusara, recognized his son’s talents and appointed him as the Viceroy of Ujjain.

Driven by his ambition, Ashoka set out on a series of conquests, waging wars against numerous kingdoms and annexing them to the Mauryan Empire. His conquests extended the empire’s borders, making it one of the most powerful in the world at that time. However, despite his military successes, Ashoka began to feel an emptiness within his heart.

During his conquest of the region of Kalinga, a pivotal event occurred that forever changed Ashoka’s life. The Battle of Kalinga, fought in 261 BCE, was a brutal conflict resulting in immense loss of life. Witnessing the devastation and suffering caused by war, Ashoka was deeply moved and overwhelmed by a sense of remorse and guilt.

Haunted by the horrors of the battlefield, Ashoka renounced violence and embraced the teachings of Lord Buddha. He converted to Buddhism and became an ardent follower of its principles. Determined to bring peace and harmony to his empire, Ashoka implemented a series of groundbreaking reforms that would later be known as the “Dhamma.”

Ashoka’s Dhamma emphasized non-violence, tolerance, and compassion for all living beings. He abolished the death penalty, promoted the welfare of his subjects, and encouraged the spread of education and knowledge. Ashoka erected edicts throughout his empire, inscribed on pillars and rocks, proclaiming his principles and urging his people to follow a path of righteousness.

Furthermore, Ashoka sent emissaries and missionaries to neighboring kingdoms and distant lands to spread the message of peace and Buddhism. He actively supported the construction of stupas, monasteries, and universities, contributing to the flourishing of art, literature, and scholarship in his empire.

As years passed, Ashoka’s reign became synonymous with benevolence and justice. His empire prospered, and he earned the respect and admiration of his subjects. The impact of his policies extended beyond his lifetime and influenced generations to come.

In the later years of his rule, Ashoka embarked on a pilgrimage, traveling to sacred Buddhist sites across India and even to Sri Lanka. During his pilgrimage, he sought to atone for the bloodshed of his earlier days and to spread the message of peace and enlightenment.

Ultimately, Ashoka’s reign stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and introspection.
