  • The Monkey and the Crocodile

    The Monkey and the Crocodile

Once there was a Black-berry (Jamun) tree on the bank of a river. This Jamun tree full of sweet Jamun fruits all over the year. A monkey named Raktamukha was lived there on the tree as his home. He lived there happily by eating sweet Jamun fruits and passed his days by playing and jumping on the tree.
One day while the monkey playing, a crocodile named Karalamukha approached near the tree from the river to take some rest under the Jamun tree. As Raktamukha saw the crocodile from the tree he reached near to him and said, “O dear crocodile, you came under this tree to take some rest. As this tree is my home thus you are my guest now. Please take rest here and accept some fruits to eat.”
The crocodile became happy by monkey’s words. He agreed with him. Immediately Raktamukha plucked some fruits from the tree and threw them into the crocodile’s mouth. Karalamukha loved the sweet Jamun fruits very much and then he became friendly with the monkey. In the evening the crocodile left the tree after thanking monkey for his love and generosity towards him.
In this way the crocodile started coming to the Jamun tree every day, and within few days they both became good friends. Everyday monkey gave some fruits to crocodile to eat and they talked about for a long time and enjoyed each other company. They became good friends.
One day Karalamukha said to the monkey that he wanted to take some of the fruits for her wife to let her enjoy the sweetness of these Jamun fruits. Monkey agreed with him and he happily plucked some more fruits for the crocodile and her wife. Karalamukha collected those fruits and reached home. As he approached home he offered them to his wife to eat those fruits and then he narrated the whole story to her of his friendship with the monkey, who lives on the Jamun tree. The crocodile’s wife enjoyed the fruits very much on eating them.
She said to her husband, “O my dear husband, these Jamun fruits are as sweet as nectar. Think if the monkey eats these fruits every day, then he would be even tastier than these fruits. I want the monkey’s heart to eat, please bring it for me.
As crocodile heard this he surprised and said to her, “O Dear, what are you telling? It’s impossible, I cannot kill or deceive my friend for his heart. Even I cannot think about such a thing.” But his wife was not agreed with him and pleaded for the monkey’s heart. Even after her continuous efforts she could not convince the crocodile for doing so. Thus she stopped eating food and insisted that if he did not bring the money’s heart for her, she would die.
Crocodile became very disappointed. Although he did not want to do so, he was left with no other choices. So he made a plan to deceive his friend and to catch him. Then, he went to the monkey. As he approached him he said, “O my friend, my wife love the Jamun fruits very much. I told my wife about our friendship and as I told her about our friendship she became angry with me for not introducing you with her. Now she is very excited to meet you and she has invited you to our home for dinner. You are my friend, so please accept our invitation.”
The monkey agreed with him at once but the problem was that how could he go to the crocodile’s home? He could not swim. So they decided that he sat on the crocodile’s back and then he carried him to his home.
As decided the monkey sat on the crocodile’s back and then they entered into the river. Crocodile carried him to deeper into the water so that he killed him as he planned. At the very moment the monkey got much feared with so much water all around him. So he said to his friend to move slowly. Crocodile understood that he had to succeed in his plan and now the monkey was totally under his control and it’s impossible for him to escape from him. He thought for a while and decided to reveal his plan to the monkey. He said, “O my friend, the truth is that I want to kill you here for my wife as he wishes to eat your heart. She thinks that your heart’s taste should be even better than the Jamun fruits as you eat all the time.”
On hearing this the monkey thought for a while but he did not show any fear to the crocodile. Instead it he knowingly said to him, “O friend, that’s the matter. Why did not you tell me that before? It would be lucky for me if I could serve myself to your wife. You are my best friend, you have to tell me earlier. But I would not have my heart with me as I keep my heart in burrow of the Jamun tree. So we have to go back to bring my heart. Let us go back.”
The foolish crocodile did not understand anything and he believed him. He turned back and then they reached the Jamun tree. As they reached the monkey jumped down the crocodile’s back and immediately climbed up the tree and sat on the top branch. Thus he finally saved himself from the evil plans of the crocodile.
At the same moment the crocodile waited for the monkey and wanted to know the cause for this delay as his wife waited for him. He asked the monkey for the delay. The monkey answered him, “O my foolish friend, how can one take out his own heart and keep it in the burrow of tree. You are so stupid. You deceived me to kill me for his wife and in return I cheat you to save myself. This is a lesson for you for being so unfaithful with a friend. Now just go away and never return back.”
The crocodile understood that he had been tricked by the monkey, and he felt very guilty for his actions. He went away to never back again.

  • The Jackal’s Strategy

    The Jackal’s Strategy

Once there lived a huge jackal named Mahachaturaka in a jungle. He wondered into the jungle to get his food and in this way he lived his life.

One day as he wandered in the jungle in search of prey, he saw a dead elephant. As he saw him he became very happy because this dead elephant will provide food to him for many days. As he reached near to him and tried to tear the elephant, he was unable to tear the thick skin of the elephant. His all happiness soon turned into sadness. He tried a lot to tear him but all his efforts went into vain, and he frustrated very much.

Within few moments while he was trying his luck to tear the elephant, a lion approached there. When the jackal saw him he bowed immediately and said to the lion, “O my highness, I found this dead elephant here and then I keeping watching over it so that you can eat it. Please accept my offer and eat this as you want.”

As the lion heard this he refused to the jackal and said, “Dear, I eat only that prey when I hunt it myself. That is my nature, thank you for the offer, but I cannot eat it. Please you can have it for yourself.”

By saying so the lion went away from there. But the problem of the jackal remained same, he wondered how he can tear this elephant’s thick skin alone. It’s impossible for him to do so. At the same time when he was thinking a leopard approaching there. When he saw the leopard he thought, “I got rid of the lion by being humble, but now I have to be cunning in order to get rid from this leopard.

Thus the jackal immediately climbed on the top of the elephant and raised his shoulders humbly and said to him, “O uncle, you have come here to eat this elephant but it’s not possible because this elephant was hunted by the lion. He asked me to guard it till he returned and called him if anybody approached it.”

As the leopard heard this, he also noticed the lion’s foot print nearby and believed him. He began to shiver in fear. He said to him, “O my Nephew, please forgive me and don’t tell the lion that I come here. I must leave this place and look for food at other places.” By saying so the leopard ran away, after assuring the jackal not to tell the lion that he came here.

But the problem remained same as was. The jackal became very disappointed how he alone teared apart this elephant’s thick skin.

After some time a tiger approached there. When the jackal saw him he thought, “I fool the leopard by saying all rubbish, but the tiger is not a fool. In addition to it he has sharp teeth. If I convince him some way to tear the elephant’s thick skin, I can finally eat it.”

The jackal began to shout at the tiger, “O Tiger, It is a long time since I have seen you. Be my friend. You look very thin and hungry. Be my guest and eat this elephant while I keep a watch for the lion. The lion killed the elephant and ask me to look after it till he returned. I can eat it and don’t worry I will keep watch.”

As the tiger heard this he convinced by the jackal and he became very happy to found such food. He immediately jumped on the elephant and tore apart him by his sharp teeth. Just as he started eating the elephant, the jackal began to shouted, “Dear, here comes the lion, run away or hide himself. He about to reach.”

As tiger heard he feared and ran away as fast as he can.

Thus the jackal finally ready to eat the elephant. The tiger had provided him the opened elephant that he needed to eat it. Just as he was about to eat the elephant another jackal arrived there. He fought bravely with the other jackal and chased him away.

Thus he was finally able to eat the elephant.

  • The Cobra and King of Frogs

The Cobra and King of Frogs

A long time ago there lived a group of frogs in a well. Gangadatta was a king among the frogs who ruled over the frogs from a long time. But the problem is that his relatives and some of his friends always irritating to him and found fault in every small thing. He was fed up with them so wanted to move to a distant place. Thus one day he climbed up the water wheel in the well and then left the place. But he wanted to take revenge from them due to which he had to leave his kingdom.

One day when he was planning for taking revenge from his relatives he saw a cobra entering his hole. Suddenly an idea struck in his mind. He thought of a plan of having his friends eaten up by the cobra if cobra helped him. Thus he immediately reached to the entrance of the hole of the cobra and said, “Dear, I want to become friend of you. Please accept my friendship. I am the king of the frogs.”

As the cobra heard this, he realised that it was not the voice of his nearest or dearest one, but of his natural enemy. So he decided not to leave the hole and come out from it. He thought that someone might be trying to be fool him to catch him, either through magic words or may be flute or even other things. After some time the cobra answered him carefully, “Who are you? What nonsense do you talking about friendship? Don’t you know that you are my natural enemy? Can a timber and fire ever be friends?

Then the king of frogs relied to him, “My Dear, indeed your words are true. But the reality is that I want to take revenge from my relatives who suffered me for many years. So now I want to teach them a lesson for which I need your help. Please help me. I can lead you to the well, which is my abandoned kingdom and then you can eat as many frogs as you want to eat. In this way I take my revenge and you also get your food.”

As the cobra heard this he thought for a while and said, “Dear, a well is built of many layers of stones and I have no legs. Then how it’s possible for me to get into the well without legs.”He continued, “Even if I manage to get into the well then where will I able to sit into the well and eat the frogs as well is filled with water. It’s totally ridiculous, so just go away.”

But the king did not want to spoil his plan so he assured the cobra and said, “My Dear friend, there is a nice comfortable hole at the edge of the water where you can sit properly and eat the frogs. I assure you that I will lead you to the inside of the well and to that comfortable hole. Don’t worry for anything but you have to promise me that you will eat only my irritating relatives and not my dear ones."

The cobra began to think that he became old now and the offer was good for him so it’s his stupidity to go away such an offer. Then the cobra agreed to the friendship of the king of frog and he followed him. As planned the cobra reached the hole into the well and whenever he felt hungry he eat one of the frog among them. As days passed away the number of frogs came down and all the annoying frogs were exhausted.

One day the cobra called out to the king of frog and said to him, “Dear, there are no more frogs here to eat me, except your friends. I am very hungry please give me some more food to eat. You are my friend, please help me. It is you who led me here for fulfil his plan, now it’s your responsibility to provide food to me.”

As the king of frogs heard this he realised his mistake but now he could not did anything except watching the cobra to eat all his friends. Even all his close friends and relatives were eaten up, the cobra eat his son also. Days passed away and no more frogs remain in the well, the cobra was very hungry and wanted the king of frogs to give some more frogs to him.

The Gangadatta realised that all the frogs were killed except him who remain alive. He wanted to get rid from cobra so he made a plan. He assured the cobra that if he let him leave the well, he will give some more frogs from the other wells to him, so that the cobra would be able to satisfy his hunger. The cobra agreed with him and he let the king of frog to do so. The king of frogs went away from the well to never return there. The cobra was very anxiously waited for him for several days but he did not return.

After a long time of waiting, the cobra requested a female lizard that lived in the walls of the well, to request the king of frogs to return into the well as he could not live alone without his best friend. The lizard approached the king of frogs and conveyed the cobra’s message. The king of frogs replied her, “Dear Madam, please convey my message to the cobra that I will never return to the well again. He is a starving person, and a starving person can be cruel and go to any extent of misdeed.

Thus, the king of frogs saved himself, and the greedy cobra had died with hunger into the well.

They both divided their duties so thy properly took care of their cubs. The lion was responsible for hunting in the jungle to provide food to the lioness and the two cubs. Thus the lion everyday went out in the morning in the jungle and came back in the evening with food and then gave this food to the lioness, who then feed the cubs and herself. Till the lion returned in the evening the lioness took care the cubs.

Days passed away and they were lived happily. One day when the lion wandering in the jungle, he did not get any food till the sunset. So he decided to return home empty hand. As he returned, on his way he saw a baby jackal and finally he got food for his family. But the lion took pity on the jackal as it was just a baby. So he decided not to kill him and he carried the baby jackal live to his home to present the lioness.

As he reached he presented him to the lioness. The lioness said to him, “My dear, how can I kill this jackal as he is only a baby. How can I kill and eat this jackal that you have not killed yourself. We cannot kill this baby so let us raise the jackal with our own babies. They will soon like each other company and then become good friends.”

Thus the lion and lioness started taking care of the baby jackal as their own babies and raising him without making any discrimination between him and their own cubs. But as they grew up they behave differently opposite to lion and lioness expectations. They always fought among themselves. This was because the jackal belong to the different trait. But the lion and lioness overlooked their childhood actions.

One day when they were playing near their den, suddenly a wild elephant approached him. As the jackal saw him he feared and prepared to escape from there. But the young cubs moved towards the elephant to attack on him. The young jackal immediately said to them, “Don’t go near him as the elephant is a natural enemy. Come with me, let us go home immediately.”

The young lions then followed the jackal back to home but they were surprised by their brother’s cowardness. They laughed at him and made fun of him. They even mocked and narrated the story to their parents. This all made the jackal very angry. So he decided to take revenge from them.

After some time when the lioness saw him alone she talked to the young jackal. The jackal said to the lioness, “Mother, I am not inferior to them in any actions. May it be bravery, or looks or education or intelligence. Look at how they both insult me and made joke on me. I have promised myself to kill them and take my revenge.”

When the lioness heard these words she surprised, but she knew what to do next. She said to him, “My son, whatever you say is true. You are not inferior to them in anyway but you are a jackal and then you behave like your own species. You don’t know the truth that many years ago, I took pity on you and raised you among my cubs as my own son without any differentiation. But now you want to take revenge from them, I must ask you to leave this place.”

Then the lioness roared on him, “Jackal, Go away, and do not return again here, or I shall kill you myself. This time I am take pity on you. Return to your race where you belong.”

When the jackal heard this he feared and he immediately fled to find his own race and then he live among them.

One day when the Shuddapatta was wandering in the jungle in search of food for the donkey, he found a dead tiger in his way. As he saw the tiger an idea came in his mind. He immediately thought, “It’s a lucky day for me to get a dead tiger. If I will skin the tiger and take that skin to home. Then I will cover my donkey with the tiger’s skin so no one can identify him and then he graze in the nearby barley field after sunset without any fear. • The War of Crows and Owls

The War of Crows and Owls

Once there was huge banyan tree near a city named Mahilaropyam. It has numerous branches which were the home to a large number of crows. The king of these crows named Meghavarana.

Near the banyan tree there was a huge cave, which was home of a large number of owls. . Arimaradana was the king of these owls.

The crows were very disappointed because the owls, as they regarded the crows as enemies, they would fly and reached the banyan tree every night. And if they succeed in catching any of crows, they attacked on them and then killed them. As the crows could not see clearly in dark at night as owls so they could not do anything to protect themselves. And as the time passed away the number of crows began to decrease.

The king of the crows was very disappointed and called his council. The council had five ministers named Ujjeevi, Sanjeevi, Anujjevi, Prajeevi and Chiranjeevi. As they all approached the king, he said to them, “O my ministers, our enemy takes advantage by attacking at night and succeed in killing many of us as we cannot fight them in night to protect ourselves. We cannot attack them even at day time since we don’t know about their secret place. Our enemy is very dangerous and powerful and we have to decide what to do now. Please advise me with your views.”

As they all heard this, first the Ujjeevi said, “O king, as our enemy is very strong and determined, I advise you to make peace with such type enemy. Peace is the only solution of this problem.”

Immediately Sanjeevi began to advice, “O majesty, the enemy is not only strong but cruel also. They follow no rule of war. So there is no reason to peace with such party. Let us fight in a way to gain advantage from them.”

Then Anujeevi advised, “My highness, our enemy is stronger than us, so it will not be sensible to fight them. They are cruel also and have no moral values, so we cannot make peace with them. So I suggest we should move to a safer place to protect ourselves.”

Then Prajeevi said, “O king, I advice entrenchment. We will be safe only in our own home. If we leave our place, we will never be able to return our home.”

At last Chiranjeevi said, "Let us seek the advice of our friends and defeat the enemy with their support."

After hearing all suggestions the king of crows was not satisfied with them so he decided to took the advice of an old minister of his father named Sthirajeevi. He said to him, “You have heard all the suggestions given by my ministers, so please suggest me the right course of action that we should take to solve this problem.

Then Sthirajeevi replied, "Your highness, your all ministers have given suggestion according to nitishashtra and their suggestions are also good. But they do not serve the situation that we have this time. As our enemy is much stronger than us, we should adopt a path of conspiracy. So you will need to send spies to find out their weak points to defeat the enemy.”

The king agreed with Sthirajeevi and said to him to explain the whole plan. Then he explained, “King, as I advise you to employ spies, our enemies also must have spies. So let us pretend that I am a conspirator, and then start cursing me with cruel words. Beat me till I bleed. And this all mislead them to believe that I am their enemy’s enemy. Within this time, you all fly away to the safe Rshyamukam Mountain and keep deeply well-established till I join you"

He continued, “In the meantime, I will gain confidence with our enemies and learn about their weak points and then return to join you. Then we hit them to gain victory. Please do not worry about me, I can take care of myself, and in this way we defeat them."

The king agreed with the old wise crow and according to the plan they immediately started quarrel. The Sthirajeevi used abusive language which angered the other crows. And as the old crow continued pretending Meghavarana hit him badly. Sthirajeevi start bleeding and within no time Meghavarana threw him down the banyan tree.

After this, he said all crows to follow him, and then they all flew straight to Rshyamukam Mountain, where they he waited for Sthirajeevi to return – as was planned.

When the owl spies saw all this they immediately informed the king of the owls about the fight. As the king heard this he decided to attack the crows with all their strength after dark at night.

At night when the owls reached the banyan tree, they found that the crows had already left the place. Then all got very angry and started investigating that which direction the crows had flew to catch them.

At the very moment, Sthirajeevi began to make sound slowly to attract the attention of the king of owls. As the Arimaradana heard the sound of the crow he reached him and surprised after seeing him. Sthirajeevi started pretending and praising the king of owl and at the same time cursing the Meghavarana. He said, “Sir, I know the place where they all hide themselves. And as soon as I regain my strength to fly again, I shall take you that place.”

Arimaradana all had council of five ministers named Raktaksha, Kriuraksha, Deeptaksha, Vakranasa, and Prakarakarna. While Raktaksha, Kriuraksha did not believe Sthirajeevi and they wanted to kill him, but the others suggested that he might prove beneficial to us to locate the enemies. So the king of the owl decided to take Sthirajeevi to their cave to offer him a suitable place to rest.

But Sthirajeevi did not want to go with them to cave as he had other plan. So he immediately requested the king to allow him to make a nest at entrance of the cave. As he did not want the other owl to get aggrieved since he belonged to the enemy.

Arimaradana accepted his request and permitted him to make nest. He said to other owls to take care of him. Thus they started feeding Sthirajeevi with the choice of foods and within few days he regained his strength.

However one of the ministers of the king of the owls, Raktaksha learned about nitishastra and he warned his king of his doubts, but all his efforts went into vain because they all fell into deaf ears. Arimaradana was totally impressed on the flattery of the Sthirajeevi. Finally Raktaksha and few of his followers left the cave.

Within these few days Sthirajeevi had gathered a lot of twigs at the entrance of the cave on pretending to make a nest there. He was very happy that Raktaksha had left the place so there is no hurdle now in his plan. He waited till noon to silently fly away to Rshyamukam Mountain where all other crows waited for him.

As he reached the mountain, he said to Meghavarana, "Your Majesty, my task is finished but I do not have enough time to explain everything to you. I have collected a lot of twigs at the entrance of the cave where the owls were lived. They will easily catch fire killing all the owls inside the cave. Please follow mw with your all followers with a burning wood in your beak.”

As Sthirajeevi told them they all immediately followed him to the entrance of the owl’s cave. They dropped the pieces of the burning woods on the twigs and suddenly the twigs caught fire which Sthirajeevi collected there. As soon as the fire spread the owls perished inside due to fire and smoke. Sthirajeevi had indeed been constructing a funeral pyre for the owls.

Thus the crows got rid from their enemy and then they fearlessly returned to their Banyan tree. And with the help of Sthirajeevi, Meghavarana ruled justly thereafter.

  • The Dove and the Hunter

    The Dove and the Hunter

Once there lived a hunter he was very mean person. He moved here and there in the jungle in search of birds and other small creatures. He was a very cruel man and looks like a Yama, the God of death. He was a very heartless person so all his friends and relatives abandoned him for his cruel behaviour.

In the same jungle there lived a pair of doves. They have prepared a beautiful nest in the top of a big banyan tree and they lived there happily.

One day the hunter reached the same tree and finding the female dove alone he caught hold her. He immediately trapped the female dove into a cage and then began looking for some more hunting. Suddenly a strong storm started which is followed by heavy rains. The hunter terrified by all this sudden changes and started searching for shelter to save him. He moved here and there but he could not find any shelter. After some time he found a big tree, as he was shivering in rain and cold, he immediately took shelter under the tree. This the same tree where the female dove he had caught lived.

After some time, the rain started to stop and the storm also ceased. The sky started to clear. But it was late night, so the hunter decided to spend the night under the tree. He started praying to the tree, “O spirit of the tree, or whoever lives here, I want to take shelter under this tree for tonight. I am drenched completely in the rain and suffer from cold and hunger. I cannot go away to any other place in this situation so please take shelter me here and protect me for the night.”

At the same time, in the nest above, the male dove was very worried about his wife as she had not returned. The storm and heavy rain also increased his worries for her wife. He said, “I am very disappointed and worried for my wife who has not returned home yet. Our home seems empty without her. I am too much worried as the storm was so strong and the wind blow so fiercely, and it is already late in the night. Please God save her.”

The female dove could hear her husband worrying from above the tree and so she called out to him. She said, “Dear, I am being held by the hunter who has taken shelter under the same tree. He trapped me in a cage finding me alone. I want to tell you something more that will be for your own good.”

The male dove surprised after listening her wife and he said to her to explain all the matter. The female dove explained, “Dear, The guest is always God. If anyone comes to your house for shelter, one must do his best efforts to him. This hunter came here to take shelter under this tree to protect himself from cold. He is hungry also. Please don’t hate him for his cruel deeds to caged me. Instead, welcome him in our home because he wants shelter for the night under your protection.”

The female dove continued explaining, “My dear husband, this is not the fault of the hunter that he caged me. But surely it’s all the result of my past deeds. Misfortunes like poverty, disease, detention and even disaster come to someone’s life as a result of his own deeds. So please don’t hate him and welcome him according to our culture and tradition.”

After hearing the words of her wife the male dove touched by her virtuous guidance. He immediately flew down and reached the hunter. He said to him, “O my friend, Welcome to our tree. Please don't worry about anything as you will be safe here. Stay in this place as long as you want. Tell me how I can help you.”

The hunter impressed by the dove and became happy to have a friend. He said to the dove, “Dear dove, Thank you very much for such warm welcome but please do something to help me from this dreadful cold.”

Immediately the dove flew to far place and returned with a piece of burning coal. Then he climbed up the tree to drop some dry leaves. Within no time the leaves began to burn. He said to the hunter, “Sir, Please warm yourself from this fire and you will be fine soon. I am an unlucky person for not being able to provide food to my guest. As you are my guest and you are very hungry so I offer myself to you. Please accept my sacrifice and make a meal out of me.” And then the dove flew into the fire which killed him.

As the hunter was very hungry and so he could not refuse to accept his offer. But at the same time he was moved by such kindness. His heart was filled with pity and he began to thought, “A man who is cruel always to other persons and done evil actions, he ultimately pays for his misdeeds and evil actions. I am also such a person and certainly go to hell for my misdeeds which I have done for so long. But this dove has righteous example, and taught me a lesson of sacrifice.”

He continued, “Now onwards I will lead a disciplined and well being life. I will leave all my evil actions and promise to sacrifice all my unwanted pleasured of life.” Then within few moments he threw away the cage, which opened the gate of the cage and released the female dove. When the female dove free, she realised that her husband was already dead and was burning in the fire. She immediately began to scream, “What I will do without you. There is no meaning of my life without you. I have lost all interest in life"

And then the female dove flew into the fire and killed herself. After her death, the female dove met her husband in heaven. He was transformed into a heavenly creature, sitting into a chariot in costly ornaments. The female dove realised that she had also assumed a divine form.

After that day the hunter left his life as a hunter and converted into a sage. He passed his days as a sage and one day when he saw a wild fire in a forest, he decided to sacrifice his life to apologise for his past deeds. Thus he paid for his misdeeds and was relieved of his sins. At last he went to heaven with great joy.

  • Frogs that rode a Snake

    Frogs that rode a Snake

Once there lived a snake named Mandavishya nearby a mountain. He was very old due to which he was unable to get his food by preying frogs.
One day he was very hungry and there were no food near him. He began to thought, “Now I became too old to hunt for food and if I did not get any food it became very weak to me. I will not be able to live anymore without food. I have to think some solution for this problem.”
Suddenly an idea struck in his mind. According to the plan he went to the nearby pond, where a number of frogs lived. As he reached there he relaxed near the bank of the pond pretending that he has no intention to hunt. He behaved as he had nothing to do with the frogs.
After seeing him at the bank of the river the frogs started to ran away, but as the snake was not hunting, so they gathered at one place and reached the snake. One of the frogs said to him, “O snake! Why do you not hunting today, though it is your behaviour.”
Then the snake started pretending and replied, “Now I have no desire for food, as I am an unlucky person.” The frog asked the reason for this, and then the snake explained him, “Dear, last night when I was moving here and there in search of food, but I did not get any food, so I bit a Brahmin's son in frustration of not getting any food. Then the Brahmin got angry and cursed me that from now onwards I shall be not able to prey any frog else I have to serve frogs. I live my life what frogs offer me to live. Thus, I am here, to serve any frogs who want my services. I can also give a ride on my back to any frog who want to do so.”
The frogs get surprised and he reached the kings of the frogs. When the king heard this news, he approached the snake along with his ministers. The king asked him that the news was really true. On being assured by the snake that he approached no harm to him, the king decided to take a ride on the snake’s back first. As the king sat on the snake’s back, he rode the king around the pond very carefully, so the king was very entertained. All the ministers even the other frogs also ride on the snake’s back one by one and they were very delighted also.
The snake too done his job carefully and proved himself a good rider by exhibiting many styles of crawling. All the frogs and especially the king of frog were very happy. They jumped and leaped all the way of returning home.
The snake thought himself that he got succeed in his plan. So the next morning he pretended to be very weak and ill and even crawled slowly. On the other hand the king of frogs was very eager to start his morning with a ride on the snake’s back as last day. As he reached the snake he came to know about his health. He asked him about his health, the snake replied, “Sir, I am feeling well today. I am too weak to even crawl. Though I have not eaten anything for many days, so must need some food to eat to get some energy to give a ride to you.”
Then the king thought for a moment, then consulted his ministers and then decided that they must serve the snake with one frog a day to keep him healthy and strong. After heard this the snake was very happy, because that was what he had planned for. The snake praised the king of frog for his kindness and sympathy, and then gave him and other frogs a ride on his back.
From that day the snake gave ride to the frogs everyday and then got a frog to eat. In this way within few days the snake gained much strength and became very healthy. On the other hand, the number of frogs decreasing day by day and the king of frog was very disappointed on realising the frogs were decreasing in numbers and there were only a few remained.
The frog’s snake cannot understand the real motive of the snake behind all this even now.
One day a big black snake approached the bank of the pond. When he saw the excited frogs hopping and jumping in joy and riding on the snake’s back, he got very surprised. Then he asked the snake the reason. He said, “O friend! Why are you carrying frogs on your back? They are our food, then why are you doing so?
Then the old snake explained everything to the black snake. He continued, "I have enjoyed many different tastes by eating many different frogs here. I have getting this easy way of life, and enjoying it here."
As thus time passed away, the snake had started eating even the lager snakes, the king’s ministers and the king's relatives. Finally one day he ate the king also and thus, all the frogs of the pond finished.

  • Of Crows and Owls

    Of Crows and Owls

Once upon a time, a number of birds lived in a jungle. All the birds – the swans, cranes, parrots, cuckoos, owls, peacocks, doves and the others decided to meet. They wanted to discuss upon a most important topic. All the birds gathered but unfortunately no crow had reached yet to join them, but they could not wait any more.
As they collected they discussed, “The Garuda, who is the king of all the birds, is always busy in serving his master. He has neither the time nor interest to concern about us. So there is no point in having such a king, who does not protect his position. He remains at the position of king only for namesake.”
And then they continued discussing, “Let us choose a king amongst us who is perfect for the position of the king.”
Then all the birds started looking at each other. They suggested many birds and at last the characters of owl attracted everybody. They discussed that the owl was powerful, had very impressive characters and most importantly he could even see at night, when we all were most unsafe. So they all agreed that the owl would be perfect king for themselves.
They all agreed and then cried loudly, “From now onwards the owl should be our king! Let us prepare for the crowning at once.”
Thus, as decided for the crowning of the owl, the birds collected water from the holy river, collected 108 holy roots of tree and then prepared a highly beautiful throne. They decorated the whole area beautifully, even spread the ground in front of the throne with tiger skin. They invited many Brahmins which when reached the place started praying and chanting through holy books. They started beating the drums and sang songs of joy. They started dancing in front of throne. All of the atmosphere full of joy and happiness. They prepared the owl for crowning.
At the same moment when the owl was reaching the throne for crowning, a crow arrived there. As he reached he asked unusually, “Please, tell me the reason of this great gathering and this generous celebration. What happening here?”
In reality as the crow was known for his smartness, so the birds decided to explain the reason of this vast gathering to seek his opinion.
They explained the crow, “O dear crow, as our King Garuda has no time to seek our problems, he always busy in serve his master. So we all decided to dethroned him and have elected owl as our new king. So here we gathered for his coronation, please joined us and provide us our opinion also.”
After heard this the crow smiled and replied, “Okay my dears, but in my opinion I would not support the crowning of the owl as our king.”
They all get surprised and asked the reason for the same. The crow explained, “Dear, as we birds are known for their beauty then why such an ugly king, as like owl. Look at him, how he ugly amongst all us. He looks so mean with his crooked nose and peep eyes. Think, how would he look if he was angry? We have the peacocks, swans, nightingales, pigeons and so many more birds who look so beautiful. The owl is blind by the day also then who look after ourselves. I undoubtedly advise you against his crowning.”
The other birds started discussing taking into account his points, and then the crow continued with his arguments, “Think, what we all gain from electing Owl as our king? We already have Garuda as our king. The only point out his name would keep our enemies away! Garuda is our best king as always. It is no need to elect a new king and dethroned the Garuda.”
On heard the crow’s logistic reason the birds started considering, “The crow is right, the reasons which he has given are also rights. So the entire reason of our gathering serve no purpose. Lets as think about the matter again and meet some other time.”
After then, one by one all the birds flew away. The Brahmins also started to leave from there. But the crow still sitting on the branch of a tree. The owl and his wife were not understand the reason of this disturbance, so they were still waiting to be crowned as king and queen.
The owl said to his wife, “What is happening here? Why all the birds left? Why is not the crowning ceremony start up till now?
Then his wife replied, “As I understand, the crow put a blockage in the crowning ceremony. He definitely told all the other birds to do so, thus all the birds left away. We have the motive behind this all. We should return home, too.”
On hearing this all, the owl got very disappointed. He started shouted on the crow, “You are a sinful bird. I never harm you in any way, and yet you put hindrance to my crowning ceremony. From today, I end all friendly relationship with you. From now onwards, we are enemies and nothing else.”
Then the owl left with his wife, to return to his home. The crow was left alone. With everybody else gone, the crow decided to leave too. While he started flying, he thought, “Why did I do all this? My advice to the birds was not necessary. And it is because of my advice that crows will always have the mighty owls as their enemies. It’s all because of me.”

  • The Wedding of the Mouse

    The Wedding of the Mouse

Once there was a beautiful hermitage near the bank of the river Ganga. A number of saints lived in this hermitage peacefully from many years. The saints were disciples of a Guru Yadnyavalkya, who was always remained under meditation. The Guru Yadnyavalkya was a great saint and also followed a strict self discipline.

One day, while he was bathing in the river, a hawk flew over with a mouse in its claws. Suddenly the mouse fell down from its claws directly reached into the hands of Guru Yadnyavalkya. When the Guru noticed that the hawk was still flying above and if he left the mouse alone, the hawk caught the mouse again. So he decided to not left him alone and put the mouse on a leaf of nearby banyan tree. When the hawk fled away the Guru again went to take a second bath to purify himself.

When the Guru returned from bath, he used his powers to transform the female mouse into a beautiful small girl and then took her to the hermitage. When he reached the home, he said to his wife, “My dear, accept this small girl as our blessing of God, as we do not have a child of our own.

The wife agreed and accepted the girl. The girl started growing in the hermitage under the care and observations of the guru and his wife. He gave her knowledge about science and ways of life. Both the Guru and his wife loved her very much and have proud on their special child.

Days passes away and then time reached when the girl reached a marriageable age. One day the Guru’s wife discussed with him about the marriage of their daughter. They decided to give it a serious thought, as she was a special child and so deserved a special husband.

On the very next morning the Guru, using his powers ordered the Sun God to be present before him and then he said, Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.” The Sun God did not say any word but the daughter said, “My Dear Father, although the Sun God lights up the entire world but he is unbearably hot. I cannot accept him as my husband. Please look for a better husband for me.”

The Guru surprised as her daughter’s words and said, “Who might be better than even the Sun God?"  Immediately the sun advised him, “Guruji, you can seek for the King of Clouds. He can cover me and my light, so he superior to me. He is perfect match for your daughter.

The Guru agreed with the Sun God and immediately called the King of Clouds by using his powers, and said, “Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

The daughter immediately said, “Father, the King of Clouds is very dark, wet and too cold. I cannot accept him as my husband. Please look for a better husband for me.”

The Guru get shocked and said, “Who might be better than even the King of Clouds?" then the King of Clouds advised him, “Don’t worry Guruji, you can seek the help of Lord of Winds. He can blow me away so he is superior to me.”

Immediately the Guru, using his powers called the Lord of Winds and requested him, “Please accept my daughter’s hand. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

Suddenly the daughter said, “Father, the Lord of Winds is too fast and never stay at one place, he keeps changing his direction always. I do not wish to marry him. Please look for a better husband for me.”

This time the Guru worried and said, “Who might be better than even the Lord of Winds?” then the Lord of Winds advised him, “Guruji, you can seek the help of the Lord of Mountains. He is tall enough and even superior to me, for he can stop me from blowing."

Then the Guruji immediately, using his powers, called the Lord of Mountains, and said, "Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.”

This time even the daughter replied, “Father, the Lord of Mountains is too hard and rigid also. He is immovable also, how can I manage with him. I do not wish to marry him. Please seek a better husband for me."

The Guru wondered on her daughter’s excuses and said, "Who might be better than even the Lord of Mountains?" Then the King of Mountains suggested, "Guruji, do not worry, you can seek the help of the King of Mice. He is superior to me, for he can make holes all over me."

So the Guru, using his powers, called the King of Mice, and requested him, "Please accept my daughter as your wife. I wish you to marry her, if she chooses you as her husband.” When the daughter saw the King of Mice, she became very happy and shyly agreed to the marriage.

Then the Guru transformed her daughter to a beautiful female mouse and then married his daughter with the mouse.
