  • Interview with Ruskin Bond at The Kolkata Literary Meet

Interview with Ruskin Bond at The Kolkata Literary Meet

Ruskin Bond, an Indian author of British descent, is an eminent contemporary writer. He prolifically authored inspiring children’s books and was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award to honor his work of literature. Born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli, India, he was the son of Edith Clarke and Aubrey Bond.  He lives with his adopted family in Landour, in Mussoorie, India. The Indian Council for Child Education has recognised his role in the growth of children’s literature in India.

The Room on the Roof, The Blue Umbrella, A Flight of Pigeons, Rusty the boy from the Hills and A Handful of Nuts are the few of his books that make him a gem in the literary world! Ruskin Bond has also been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his works.

What catalyzed your interest in writing?

I was a bookworm since my childhood. I always used to read all my favourite authors’ books, and so, by the time I had finished school, I wanted to be a writer too! (Smiles)

Is nostalgia a better trigger for you than the reality of today?

I enjoy writing about the past, but the present is after all fashioned by the past. So, both are important.

Do you consider writing as the means to escape the harsh reality that life throws at us?

No not at all, because for me, writing has always been the harsh reality. Though, I never made much money from it! (Laughs)

    How would you describe yourself?

I’m round, pudgy, gregarious…comfortable with myself. (Laughs)

Has the Indian literary scene changed over the last few years?

Yes, it has changed considerably, partly because of these literary meets. Now more young people are wanting to be writers and are writing well. So, now there are far more writers than before , and there are far more publishing companies now. Although, publishing is looking up, book selling is going down for some reasons. Though there are contradictions there.

What are your views on censorship of books in India?

Over the years, we did not have many books censored in India. Books are censored for political, religious and various other reasons, where the authorities thought that it could be inflammatory in some regions. The book ‘Nine Hours to Rama’ by Stanley Wolpert portrays Godse’s life shortly before and after he had assassinated Gandhi. The book was turned into a film, but was never released. The book was also banned in India. But later when I got hold of a copy of the book, I thought that the book was perfectly harmless. Although the book is still not available, one can order it online and easily get it.

In ‘The Room on the Roof’, you portrayed how important friendship is in your life. What inspired you to write it?

I was only seventeen years old when I wrote ‘The Room on the Roof’, and took a couple of years to get it published too. Of course even then I had a full time intention of being a writer, but, what can you possibly write about at that age? You’ve got only fifteen to sixteen years of life experience. So, I wrote on my life but fictionalized my writing to a certain extent. When I had just gone to England, and was feeling very homesick for India, I started writing a diary. When I wanted to write something, I wrote on the diary, which later became the primary basis of my first novel. I took my story to several publishers out of which three or four had rejected it, until I finally found a sympathetic publisher to publish my story. Even then I had to write two or three drafts, before it finally got published. I worked harder on my first novel than I have done anywhere else. (Laughs).

Tell us something about your favourite poem and book that has touched you very deeply.

I like the poems of Walter de la Mare a lot. There is this poem [‘Fare Well’] by him which goes …” Look thy last on all things lovely/ Every hour. Let no night/ Seal thy sense in deathly slumber/ Till to delight / Thou have paid my utmost blessing.” This means that look around and appreciate everything you see, because you might see it for the last time. ‘Fare Well’ will always remain my all time favourite poem.(Smiles)

My favourite story is ‘Typhoon’ by Joseph Conrad. It is a very thrilling story. The story is about a storm at the sea, and there is a ship that is going from Singapore to Hong Kong in a typhoon. It was an old, rattled ship that could have perished in the storm, but the captain of the ship was single-minded and was determined to get to his destination, irrespective of the hurdles in front of him. But after he safely reaches harbor, he gets no reward or credits for that.

The captain did not care about awards and was satisfied with whatever he has done. However, I don’t like the long stories by Conrad, but his short stories are very good.

Some people claim to be Gods and God-men. What is your view on that?

When you are creating something, you are definitely not God. You can contemplate yourself as God-like, but not God. Humans can never become God.

In the film ‘Junoon’ (1978),alongside the craftsmanship, the language differed from the book it was originally written in. Do you believe that it affects the essence of the story?

‘A Flight Of Pigeons’ is obviously written in English, whereas the narrator in Junoon speaks in Hindi and a little bit of Urdu. I always write as simply as possible, so that when people read the book, can easily enjoy it. It was a story set in couple of decades back, and I didn’t want to make it too remote or too academic. But since films in Bollywood industry are largely made in Hindi, so the story had to be rendered in Hindi.

It is a common notion that an author receives great validation and appraisals if his/ her books are turned into films. Do you believe that in today’s time, movies validate an author’s creative work?

It all depends on the film. There have been some great films based on books and there have been some terrible films based on literary works. But as far as my own story go, ‘A Flight Of Pigeons’ is not one of my most successful books. Although this book was published by Penguin, it barely sold 1000 copies in the last 25 years…whereas some of my children’s books have been sold in lakhs. So, it doesn’t really mean that if a book is turned into a film, that it’s going to make the book a popular one. ‘A Flight Of Pigeons’ still remains one of my lesser known works, though it has always been one of my better ones.

Do you think that some more of your books could have been turned into movies, but did not happen?

Two or three of my books were filmed quite successfully, eg. ‘The Blue Umbrella’, ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ etc. Whereas, nobody knows that there were two stories filmed, and they were so bad that they couldn’t get any distributor.(Laughs) One out of those two films were called ‘The Last Tiger’, where they got a circus tiger to play a role in the movie. The tiger was so tamed that every time it got hungry, it ran back to its cage in the zoo. They couldn’t get the tiger to play it’s role. (Laughs)

Did you really meet the girl whom you have mentioned in ‘The Eyes Have It’?

(Laughs) I did meet her! Infact, I have met all the girls I write about! But unfortunately, I’ve lost most of them too. (Laughs)

Your book ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’ is very different from all the genre you usually write in. What inspired you to write it?

The character of Susanna was inspired from a real lady who lived in the outskirts of Chinsura. She was a very rich, wealthy lady, who was reported to have married 7 times. Most of those men who married her were fortune hunters and she claimed to dispose them in various intricate ways, such as by introducing a cobra in her husband’s bed and in similar ingenious ways. She was the female version of ‘Bluebeard’. She got rid of 7 terrible husbands.(Laughs) Although the storyline of the film (‘7 Khoon Maaf’) was changed in various ways. The film was not quite similar to the book.

You are the classic example of what Picasso had said,” It takes long time to grow young.” What keeps you motivated and gleeful at this age?

I guess it’s your nature and how you are born in that way, which remains with you even when you grow older. Although, I think that I am certainly more optimistic and cheerful person now than I was in my teenager years. In my twenties and thirties, I took myself very seriously…too seriously. (Laughs) But now I realize that life can be completely ridiculous at times. We become too philosophical as we grow up and start taking ourselves too seriously. When I was a boy in my twenties, everyone used to tell me that I was ‘too old’ for my age. And now they say that I am ‘too young’ for my age! (Laughs)

Do you believe that with the advent of e-books, the pure essence of physically holding a book and reading it, is somewhat tarnished?

The selling of books aren’t going down, but the means of selling are changing as more and more people are buying books online, resulting in some of the bookshops to close down. I won’t say that fewer people are reading. But you see, reading has always been in the minority part. Even when I was a schoolboy, only 3 students out of 30 would read books. And even in those days, there were no television or internet, and people still refrained from reading. But since now there has been a tremendous increase in the number of young educated people, so in terms of number, even the ‘small percentage’ of readers are very big now. This resulted the publishers to publish books and sell them, because now there is a larger market.

What is the one thing that is absolutely essential in order to become a good author?

Apart from having a creative mind, the primary thing in order to become a good author is that, you should have a good command over the language. Language is always important, because it is the means through which you are going to communicate with your readers. Whatever language you choose to write in, whether it is Hindi, English or Bengali, you should have a good mastery of that language. Once you gain the mastery of the language, you can easily experiment and play with words and create beautiful sentences, or even create an atmosphere and give effects. Mastery of the language is very important in order to create an atmosphere of the story.

    Your advise for aspiring authors.

I am at no position of advising them. Some are making more money than I am! (Laughs)

  • “The Enchanted Clearing: Amara’s Journey of Nature and Magic”

Once upon a time in a small village nestled deep within a dense forest, there lived a young girl named Amara. She had always felt a special connection to nature and spent most of her days exploring the enchanting woods that surrounded her home. Amara’s village was known for its vibrant culture and traditional festivities. Every year, they celebrated the Festival of Lights, a grand event where the villagers adorned their houses with beautiful lanterns and lit up the entire village. It was a magical sight to behold. One evening, as Amara was wandering through the forest, she stumbled upon a hidden pathway she had never seen before. Curiosity overwhelmed her, and she decided to venture down the mysterious path. It led her deeper into the heart of the forest, where she discovered a hidden clearing filled with the most extraordinary creatures she had ever seen. There were mystical beings with shimmering wings, mischievous sprites dancing in the moonlight, and talking animals conversing with one another. They welcomed Amara with open arms, sensing the pureness of her heart and her deep love for nature. Amara spent days and nights in the enchanted clearing, learning from the magical creatures. They taught her the secrets of the forest, the healing powers of plants, and the ancient rituals to communicate with animals. Amara’s bond with nature grew stronger, and she realized her purpose was to protect and preserve the beauty of the forest. Word of Amara’s extraordinary encounters spread throughout the village, sparking curiosity and excitement among the villagers. They began to visit the hidden clearing, witnessing the wonders themselves. The Festival of Lights took on a new meaning as the villagers incorporated elements from the enchanted forest into their celebrations. As time passed, the village and the enchanted forest became interconnected. The villagers recognized the importance of living in harmony with nature and adopted sustainable practices. They established a sanctuary to protect the creatures and the forest, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Amara’s story was passed down through the generations, becoming a tale of hope, unity, and the power of nature. It inspired many to reconnect with the natural world and appreciate the wonders that surrounded them. Although Amara’s story remained unpublished and unheard of beyond the village, its essence spread far and wide. People who encountered the forest, whether by chance or destiny, felt a sense of awe and wonder. They experienced the magic of the hidden clearing, a place where the boundaries between the human and mystical world blurred. And so, the story of Amara and the enchanted forest lived on, a timeless tale of a young girl who discovered her purpose and brought light to the lives of those she touched. It remained a secret, shared only by those who believed in the power of magic and the profound connection between humanity and nature.

  • A time travel to the past

Hello friend A Time T s, do you know I had an amazing incident with me that I had travelled 1,00,000 lakh years ago to past. Let me tell you the whole story. It was our summer vacation and we had planned to visit the place Japan. As my father had already booked our flight ticket.

So, when it was Sunday we woke up early in the morning and reached the airport and took of the flight to another airport and from there we went took another flight to direct Japan. And reached the Tokyo airport. So, then we took one day break because we were very tired and exhausted. So, the next day we went on a camping in am forest and we saw there a very big tree. There was also a big hole in it.

We went inside it and saw a mic that told us how much years ago we will go. So, I told 1,00,000 lakh years back. So very bright light came and we saw that we really came back to past as I have saw this type of images and things in my history books. I saw that it was very green as it has more trees and the the air and water was too clean . There were many kinds of animals like saber tooth tiger, mammoth, etc.

There were also some people who were hunter-gatherers. They were living caves and were using tools made up of wood, stones, bones, etc. When we saw much things we came back to our time and enjoyed our rest holidays but the time travel to the past was really awesome and cool and we all really enjoyed it so much.

  • Prologue

“Is there no way to save my son?”

“Sir, we need to transplant a heart immediately.”

The surgery was difficult; one beating heart ceased beating and was replaced with a new mortal essence, which caused one mother’s tears and the family to pace in front of the operating room. The father’s tensed face and the grandmother’s recitation of prayers. A brother took a hushed breath while keeping his eyes fixed on the OT.

    “Congratulations, it was successful.”

Their gratefulness whispered to the doctor as their eyes glistened with joy. Their lungs took in the comfort. However, the father has to walk away from the family.

“How much money is required, then?”

“There is no cost for the donor, sir. When they passed away, they wanted to leave a legacy.” The doctor informs while smiling dejectedly.

Father pauses to say, “I see,” before returning his focus to the physician. “who are they? Can we meet up? I must at least express my gratitude.”

“The donor’s husband does not want to meet you because the family long ago took the body home. He opposes this vehemently. When he arrived, the procedure had already been completed. Because your son needed a heart..” The doctor sighed heavily while gazing at the ground.

“The donor also consented in writing to give their heart. Therefore, don’t feel bad.” the doctor swiftly added, while observing the remorse in the parent’s eyes.

“In any case, if he is well and his body has accepted the heart, he can be discharged.” The doctor grinned as he left the area.

“Thank you, doc,” Father said with gratitude and the doc smiled while walking away.

                                                                                                                     ⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

The donor’s husband sobbed uncontrollably as he hugged the coffin of his beloved while hot tears streamed down his scarlet cheeks. Although sympathies were being expressed for the family, the husband didn’t require any of that. Just give him back his love, sweetheart, and everything, and act as if the catastrophe never happened.

A baby’s gentle hiccups cause the husband to turn around and look at his mother-in-law, who is attempting to quiet the 10-month-old. Quickly reaching out to his in-law, he demanded his son.

    “Ro—”

“Please, only he can now give me the courage.” The grandmother hesitated before giving her grandson. When the father hugged his son and held him close while he shed a few silent tears, she bit her handkerchief.

“Baby, be calm. Your papa is here.” He stroked the boy’s pink cheeks while gazing at the small nose that reminded him of his love, who had been asleep for all eternity.

“Your father is only able to breathe because of you. Otherwise…” The spouse cast a glance at the casket, which had been decorated with white flowers. He cries while closely embracing his son.

He still finds it difficult to accept reality. He squeezed his eyes, hoping to wake up. Although, his son fisting his shirt was proving him wrong. However, his son is the one helping him not to break down completely.

  • A 2 AM Conversation

SHE BROUGHT ME A CUP OF CHAI AND WE SAT TOGETHER ON THE COUCH AND WITNESSED THE BEAUTIFUL MOON SHINING TO ITS BRIGHTEST. AFTER A WHILE, SHE BROKE THE SILENCE AND ASKED ME WITH A SMILE  AND HER HEAD ON MY SHOULDERS, “HOW WAS YOUR DAY? YOU LOOK PRETTY TIRED.”

I COULD SEE THAT SHE WANTS THE GENUINE ANSWER ”IT WAS A QUITE ROUGH DAY AT WORK”. I SAID ” YOU KNOW BEING AN INTERN AT A BIG FIRM IS NOT AN EASY JOB. TODAY THE WORKLOAD WAS A LOT AND THE DAY WAS HECTIC AS  HELL. ” SHE SMILED IN EMPATHY AND LEFT THE CONVERSATION THERE. I TOOK A GLANCE AT HER AND CAUGHT HER SMILING. I COULDN’T HELP MYSELF BUT ASK “WHY ARE YOU SMILING?” I LOVE TO WATCH HER SMILE LIKE THAT BUT SOMEHOW, I JUST ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW THE REASON BEHIND IT.

“I JUST CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT HOW CRAZY YOU WERE BEFORE ABOUT THIS JOB AND NOW WHEN YOU ARE WORKING THERE YOU SEEM TIRED ALL THE TIME.”, SHE SAID.

SHE HAS BEEN WITH ME SINCE COLLEGE, SHE HAS SEEN ALL MY UPS AND DOWNS, AND MY LOVE FOR THIS JOB. IT WAS MY DREAM JOB AT THAT TIME. AND WHEN WE GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE LAST MONTH, I APPLIED FOR THE INTERNSHIP, IT FELT LIKE AS IF EVERY PUZZLE PIECE WAS SLOWLY FALLING INTO PLACE.

AFTER HEARING THIS KIND OF REMARK FROM HER ON MY JOB, SOMETHING CLICKED IN MY CONFUSION AND DOUBTS, AND TO CLEAR IT UP I ASKED HER. “WHAT MADE YOU SAY THAT? IS IT JUST THE TIREDNESS OF WORK OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE?” SHE HESITATED, AND THEN SAID, “YOU LOOK LIKE SOMEONE WHO IS DOING THE JOB JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT. IT FEELS LIKE YOU ARE NOT ENJOYING YOUR WORK COMPLETELY.”

SHE WAS RIGHT, TO AN EXTENT AND THEN IT HIT ME AGAIN WITH A CLEAR VISION. WHEN I WAS JUST CRAZY ABOUT THIS JOB, I NEVER REALISED THAT I WASN’T CRAZY ABOUT THE WORK BUT THE ”JOB’‘. THE NAME AND THE REPUTATION OF THE COMPANY THAT IT HOLDS IN THE FIELD THAT I WAS ALSO A PART OF.

I DID ”LOVE” THE JOB BECAUSE I NEVER THOUGHT THIS THROUGH, AND NEVER TRIED TO UNDERSTAND THE WORKLOAD AND THE RESPONSIBILITY IT WILL BRING ALONG. THEY SAY THAT THE 2 AM CONVERSATIONS OFTEN MAKE YOU REALISE THINGS THAT YOU OTHERWISE REFUSE TO NOTICE. THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I GOT MY ANSWER THAT TO BE HAPPY AT WORK, I SHOULD LOVE MY WORK. IN THAT WAY EVEN IF MY LIFE WOULDN’T PERFECT AT LEAST I WILL BE HAPPY BECAUSE I WILL BE DOING SOMETHING THAT I LOVE. THEN EVEN THE WORKLOAD WILL FEEL LIKE A CHALLENGE AND A STEP TOWARDS MY GROWTH. I CAN NOW FINALLY CHOOSE WHAT I WANT TO DO AND FIGURE OUT THINGS MORE LOGICALLY AND ACCORDING TO MY INTERESTS.

I WANT TO THANK HER FOR BEING BY MY SIDE. SOMETIMES THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE GIVE YOU THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE IN THE SUBTLEST WAY THAT IT CHANGES YOUR WHOLE PERSPECTIVE OF OURS. I JUST WISH THAT SHE STAYS WITH ME LIKE THIS AND WE CAN SIMPLY JUST HELP EACH OTHER GROW.

  • Whispers of Empathy: Discovering Meaning in the Park

Whispers of Empathy: Discovering Meaning in the Park

In a bustling city, amidst the chaos of daily life, there was a small park tucked away in a quiet corner. Its tranquility drew people seeking solace from the pressures of their busy lives. This park had become a refuge, a sanctuary for those in search of deep meaningful insights.

One day, a young man named Ethan discovered this hidden gem. He was struggling with the demands of his high-powered job and the expectations of society. Overwhelmed and lost, he stumbled upon the park by chance.

As Ethan entered the park, he noticed a group of people sitting in a circle, engaged in an animated discussion. Curiosity got the better of him, and he joined the circle. The topic of conversation was “empathy.”

Each person in the circle shared their thoughts and experiences, talking about the power of empathy to connect and heal. Ethan listened intently, absorbing their words like a sponge. The stories resonated with him deeply, stirring emotions he had long suppressed.

Through the conversations, Ethan realized that empathy was more than just understanding someone else’s perspective; it was about genuinely connecting with others and acknowledging their struggles. He learned that true empathy required setting aside judgments and preconceived notions, and embracing vulnerability and compassion.

The discussions in the park became a regular occurrence for Ethan. He discovered a community of like-minded individuals who were also seeking meaning and connection. Together, they explored various topics, delving into love, forgiveness, and gratitude.

As time went by, Ethan’s perspective on life began to shift. He found himself prioritizing human connections over material possessions and career success. The park became a sanctuary where he could escape the noise of the world and delve into the depths of his soul.

Ethan’s transformation inspired those around him. The ripple effect of his newfound wisdom began to spread beyond the park, touching the lives of his friends, family, and colleagues. Through his actions, he reminded others of the importance of empathy and deep meaningful connections in a world often driven by superficiality.

And so, the small park continued to be a beacon of hope, welcoming those in need of solace and enlightenment. Its influence extended far beyond its physical boundaries, reminding humanity of the profound impact we can have on one another through empathy and meaningful insights.

  • The Journey of An Ordinary Girl With Extraordinary Dreams

-“The road to success is always under construction”

As Meeta heard this line for 150th time in her life, she whispered to herself, “Not again!” Sitting in a counselling class in her 1st day of college in B.Tech, she realized it was a mistake choosing Bio-science as a career, that too in engineering. If only her parents ever had listened to her for one time over her uncle, she would not be in a department that she had never wanted. But the state engineering rank had already let down her parents and they couldn’t risk giving the power of making decision for her life herself further.

-“Yes, I did it, I can’t believe it!” Meeta screamed out of excitement as she saw her name got selected in one of the most prestigious institutes in India for masters after working hard for 2 consecutive years. And guess what? She did it in her once most unwanted subject, Bio-science! Tears rolled down her eyes in excitement as she rushed to his parents. “Really? Oh my god, this is unbelievable, god bless you my dear”, Meeta’s mom said and went back to checking her facebook feed again. “I knew you would do it, you have so much intelligence”, said her father in a normal voice and he went back upstairs to chant hanuman chaleesa. “Wait, what?? That’s it??” Meeta’s subconscious mind told to herself. “Why are they so cold? Aren’t they supposed to talk to me and celebrate my success?”

Meeta smiled and looked up to the sky. The moon was shining at its’ highest. Meeta can relate herself to the moon often. Like the dark patches on the moon, which tells that nothing is perfect in this universe, Meeta realizes often that however hardness it takes to climb a mountain, however risky it is to make a decision, however lively it feels to get selected in a good college, it is always the one doing it, feels it the most, no one else gives a damn, not even the parents. But she didn’t know how to feel. She couldn’t really shake off the fact that her parents weren’t really happy or at least seemed happy that she had been selected. And in fact in that subject in which they wanted to put her into. Although Meeta had eventually liked Bio-science, but didn’t she deserve a good gesture from her parent? Why, for one moment, her life can’t be perfect? This made her cry hard, but low enough so that her parents didn’t hear it.

    “Meeta?” called her father.

“Ohh papa! What are you doing here?” Meeta got a little surprised as her father never comes to the roof at 11 of night.

“Can you come in for a moment dear?”

Meeta wiped off her tears with hands carefully so that her father wouldn’t notice her crying. As she went back from terrace in downstairs, something startled her. Meeta couldn’t believe in her eyes what her father just gave her. ‘The journey of an ordinary girl with extraordinary dreams by Meeta Banerjee’ the book reads. Meeta looked straight to her father’s eyes with surprise. “Yes my dear, you got it right. It’s your own book and what else could be the perfect time to give it to you?” Meeta took the book from her father and opened it. Her hands were shaking. The book’s cover was of violet color upon which her name and book’s title were shining in golden shimmer color. She opened the first page that reads ‘Before you start reading’ by Sumit Banerjee. What is this?!! Why is her father’s name there? She again looked at her father. He smiled and nodded that gave the clear indication to read it.

-“When I first saw my girl, I knew that she is the only one who can make me proud. She was so lively, beautiful and sharp girl that I set the bar very high for her at a very early age. When she didn’t meet the bar, I took all the independence from her, not realizing it is okay to fail sometimes and how stubborn I was being to let her put into a college to study a subject she never wanted. But she never protested. I knew this was not giving her any happiness. If any other girl would have been there in place of Meeta, she would have broken down. But Meeta never gave up. She was surprisingly doing well in her academics. When she had a bad day, I knew it from hearing her voice. But when I used to ask her, she would tell nothing. She once had fever; I got to know it from her friend after she almost fainted in her hostel room. She was in love with someone who didn’t love her back; she talked to me day after day like nothing happened. I got a love letter addressed to him from her bag in her absence when she came home for weekend. She was betrayed by her friends in exchange of being honest and helped them whenever they needed. It is that moment when I realized my daughter cannot be set into a bar, every time she exceptionally raised it. But, more than that, I was ashamed of being such a father who could not be her comfort zone where she could come and share her pain with me and her mother. This was a good realization for us. We took a decision that day that whatever her result is; be good or bad, we will be giving this book to her because we knew how much she wanted to get her own book published. She doesn’t know that we are sending it to the publisher. The reason for writing this intro is to let her know that she can tell me everything without being judged and I will be there for her always. I am sure my girl writes far better than me. So turn the page and start reading.”                             –Meeta’s father

As Meeta completed reading it, she couldn’t resist herself hugging her father and crying.

“And that ignorance before sometime after hearing your result, well, that was an acting to not let you guess what surprise we were about to give you”, her mother said and smiled.

She realized she got the perfect gift for celebrating her success.

  • Ideal General

Once upon a time, there was a jungle near the kingdom of Raja Shantanu. In the jungle, on one tree, the crow’s king and queen used to live. They used to be a very happy couple. Wherever they went, they used to go together. They also used to eat and drink together.

Once, they were both flying above Raja Shantanu’s Palace. At that time, the food for His Majesty was being made. Colorful, delicious food was being placed on their plates.

“Oh wow!! My queen, see how delicious that food looks,”, said the crow to his wife.

“Yes, I am watching. But what can we do? We cannot do anything other than watch this tasty food. Look how tasty that fried fish looks! It will be fun eating that,” the crow’s wife said while looking at the fish plate.

“That’s true. But what good is it to gaze upon something we cannot consume?”

“Yes, you are right, dear. How stupid we are. We are so unlucky that we cannot even get one small thing.”

Crow observed his wife, who was deeply contemplating something. He knew exactly what his wife was feeling. But what could he do? He sighed helplessly.

The couple was preparing to go food hunting the following day.

The crow then exclaimed, “Dear! We should consume the fried fish from the palace that we observed yesterday.”

“My king, why are you fretting over it? We should tell this to our general.”

Hearing his wife crow, he questioned why he was still worrying about it from the previous evening. But didn’t even think that his soldiers could do it easily. He was so thrilled that he immediately called the general.

The general bowed and replied, “Yes, your majesty, you called me.”

“See here, general, last night we saw very delicious food in the palace.”, Crow said.

“Then what would you like, sir?”

“We wish to have that meal.”

The general responded, “Your wish will be completed soon, my lord; please do not worry; I will personally go to bring the meal,” after being informed of this. By declaring that this general took flight with eight soldiers and headed for Raja Shantanu’s Palace.

The general entered the palace and looked around.

“You all go sit on the kitchen roof”, the general ordered his soldiers.

The general was contemplating strategy as he sat with his soldiers.

“Yes, then pay attention, my brave soldiers; nobody will give us this food, even if we beg for it. Remember that we are here to get food for the king. We will only get it if we snatch it, but we cannot do that as the king’s army is very powerful. His soldiers are guarding the kitchen. And everyone knows how much they hate us crows. People are alarmed when they see our faces.”

The general then made an effort to grab the attention of the soldiers serving under the king. The cook noticed the general at the same time. He left the food and went after him. The other eight soldiers were prepared to do their jobs as well. All the crows seized every morsel they could when the dinner plate fell to the ground. All this happened so fast that people near the plate were just standing there like statues.

The general, on the other hand, grew weary while flying, but he was pleased that his plan had succeeded. He realized he could not get out of the palace. He let the cook and the soldiers catch him because he did not want to end up dead. Crow’s general was brought to the king by the cook.

“Look, Lord, I have brought the sinner whose sin no one can pardon.”

    “What sin?”, asked the king

“This crow, my lord, is the sinner.”

    “A crow and a sinner?”

“My lord does not consider him to be a common crow; he committed a serious sin.”

    “What crime did he commit?”

“He dirtied your meal and let his friends eat it. What could possibly be a greater sin than that?”

“What did you just do, Crow?”

“Your majesty, I am the crows’ general. Our king wanted to eat the food prepared for you. I did all this to complete his wish. I am prepared to pay a price for my wrongdoing.

“Oh wow! General, you have great courage! You did not even give thought to your life in order to fulfill your king’s wish.”

The crow general remarked, “My king, every soldier’s objective is to fulfill his duty.”

“Excellent! I am so glad I got to meet you, Crow General. I am glad to let you go because I respect your courage.”

King’s statement stunned everyone in the room. As soon as Crow General was released, he took off in a flight.
