It was 10:00 pm on a Friday. I was just closing the register and was about to close the store when I suddenly hear the door creak. Who could it be at this hour of the day? I move towards the door to check but to my surprise, no one was there. The wind chime was still moving from the air that came inside when the door closed. I immediately turn to the switchboard and turn all the lights up. I walk towards the bookshelves and I see a teenage boy sitting across the corner. He is covered in blood. I hesitantly go towards him and it appears to me that I know him from somewhere. And it suddenly hits me that this is the kid that has been all over the news for the past week, Jack. He was missing.

He looks terrified and his clothes are ragged. He knows that I can see the blood all over his clothes. Before I could ask him anything, he goes,” I didn’t mean to kill him”. Kill who? Who could he possibly have killed? I want to ask him so many questions but I think he would be hungry. So, I offer him some water and a leftover sandwich from lunch. He is eating like he has been starving for days.

After he finishes, I ask him,” Where have you been all these days? The police have been looking for you everywhere.”

He responds,” I was trapped in a basement. I don’t know where I was. Last week, I was at the park playing with my friends. When I went looking for the ball in the bushes, someone hit me from behind and I passed out. Next thing I know, I am in a basement trapped with some other children, most of them my age. I didn’t know what to do.”

“Do you know who kidnapped you?”

“I have seen him. I don’t know who he is.”

He starts sobbing and continues,

“The only thing I know is that he used to sexually abuse the kids and I was one of his victims. He only fed us once a day.”

“You said earlier that you didn’t mean to kill him. Who did you kill and why?”

“One day, I found a piece of glass laying around in the basement. I knew I had to do something. I cut the ropes tied to my arms and legs and I hid behind the door. When the guy came, he saw my shadow and immediately turned towards me. I didn’t know what to do so I cut his throat with the glass I had in my hand.”

“Oh my god. How did you escape?”

“The basement door was open. I took the chance and ran away; this is the first store I came across. I needed somewhere to hide.”

“Don’t be afraid. Where are the kids that you said were trapped with you? Are they still in the basement?”

“Yes.”

“Can you take me there? Do you remember the way?”

“Yes.”

I followed him and after walking a few blocks, he pointed to a building. I went in there with him and saw the other children. I untied their ropes and immediately called the police. The police arrived in no time and took all the kids to rescue. They took the dead body of the kidnapper in an ambulance.

It was later shown in the news that the guy who was killed was a serial killer who has killed several children to date. Jack was released after finding out that he attacked the guy only in self-defense. I was relieved to know that.

The overall story is quite captivating and intense. The first paragraph engages the reader right from the start with its mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere. The use of details, such as the moving wind chime and the blood-covered teenage boy, creates vivid imagery and intensifies the sense of unease. The revelation that the boy is Jack, who had been missing, adds an intriguing twist to the narrative. Overall, the paragraph successfully hooks the reader and leaves them eager to know what will happen next. However, the execution falls short in some areas. The description of the door creaking and the wind chime moving feels clichéd and lacks originality. The sudden appearance of the blood-covered teenage boy seems forced and lacks sufficient buildup or explanation.
Continuing with the story ahead, it has a good grip of how the boy escaped the cruelsome situation and how he was lucky but it feels that there could have been better details about how he lived for a while in the basement and how he tried to build up the courage to attack the kidnapper.
Overall, the story is quite great with an easy way of understanding it for the readers , but those who are interested in these stories might feel that it lacks a smoother progression of events to enhance the overall suspense and believability of the story.

A wonderful beginning with building suspense and a detailed start. The story about a girl who sees a boy covered with blood sitting on a corner desk in her store. Starting gives a horror or thriller vibe but later the truth is unveiled about the kidnapping story of boy along with others by some serial killer whom the boy has murdered in self defence. The girl with the help of boy reaches the basement where all other children were kept hostile. She calls the police and after further investigation from boy, he is released too. Story has good start but due to lack of details in the mid half, it loses its touch. It could be a good thriller suspense story.
