    A Thousand Splendid Suns

‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ is the second novel by Khaled Hosseini. His first novel ‘The Kite Runner’ is a huge bestseller. While the Kite runner is a story of two boys of contemporary Afghanistan, their friendship, and their struggle to improve their livelihood amid the ethnic rivalries and the warfare, this book tells the tale of two Afghani women, Laila and Mariam, their life, their sorrow, their friendship and their sacrifices. Unlike his first novel, Khaled Hosseini has written this novel in dual narrative. The theme of the novel is revealed early on by Mariam’s epileptic mother: “Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman”. The two main character of the novel is brought together by war, tragedy and abuse.

We are dropped into the world of a nine year old girl, Mariam at the beginning. She is harami, an illegitimate child of the owner of Herat’s cinema, Jalil and his maid. She lives with her bitter mother in a makeshift house on the outskirts of Herat while his father lives with his three wives in Herat. Mariam lives a sad and isolated life. She always longs to live with Jalil’s other children as she hates her limited space in his life. Her cold, stubborn and spiteful mother always bullies her. The weekly visit from her charming but insincere father is the only ray of light in Mariam’s life. She adores her father, she finds the emptiness in his love when she pushes too hard for his love, and shows up at his house because he does not take her to cinema on her fifteenth birthday as promised, and he does not let her in.

The very next day, tragedy begins in Mariam’s life, her mother commits suicide. She comes to live with Jalil after her mother’s death. She faces many blame and prejudices from Jalil’s family. But the author does not end her misery there, soon her unfeeling father marries her off to a 40 year old family acquaintance, Rasheed. She goes to Kabul with her husband. Amid all other problems, her life isn’t any more terrible as Rasheed is grumpy but a kind man. But her happiness is short-lived, after Mariam’s continual miscarriages Rasheed shows up his true color. She is trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage: “Mariam was afraid. She lived in fear of his shifting moods, his insistence on steering even mundane exchanges down a confrontational path that, on occasion, he would resolve with punches, slaps, kicks, and sometimes try to make amends for with polluted apologies and sometimes not”.

However, Khaled Hosseini does something unique. He tells about Rasheed’s sorrowful past which doesn’t justify his actions but it makes you feel sympathy, you pity him for his situation.

Then Hosseini switches to the second narrative- Laila. She is a young neighbor of Rasheed with an unaffectionate, depression-crippled mother and scholarly, adoring ineffectual father. When the Soviets kill her brothers in a war against Afghanistan, she finds solitude in her best friend Tariq, a few year older teenager. The plot becomes more melodramatic when her parent die due to a rocket attack by Americans on her house, alone and broken Laila is forced to marry Rasheed.

Hosseini has shown the contrast in Laila’s perspective about Mariam, she first saw her when she “passed Rasheed, the shoemaker, with his burka-clad wife, Mariam, in tow”. But when she sees the horrible condition of Mariam herself: “For the first time, it was not an adversary’s face Laila saw but a face of grievances unspoken, burdens gone unprotested, a destiny submitted to and endured. If she stayed, would this be her own face, Laila wondered?”

Laila also faces the same abuse as Mariam when she gives birth to her firstborn girl, Aziza and then Hosseini shows how these two women were brought together by helplessness, grief and misery.

Through these events, he not only tells about the condition of Afghani women in the early 1960s to the early 2000s, but he also intends to say that every silent burqa-cladded women has a story of which the world is unaware of. He vaguely describes the historic events taking place in Afghanistan during that time. He focuses less on outer landscapes than inner ones. Politics and history is never the driving force of this novel. In the last chapter, Hosseini has shown an almost happy ending where the people of Afghanistan gets their peaceful life back, it shows his personal longing for a better Afghanistan as Khaled Hosseini is born in Kabul and in his later life, he has shifted to America, this makes the ending little fragile.

Overall this is a fictional novel at its emotive best, it makes you cry like a child. It is not merely a sad story, it lights a fire within us. It is a tale of life and of hope. It is a story of the inevitable conflict which comes with living and the heroism which comes with love. Outstanding, inspirational, every women and men must read this novel.

Book Review : AQSON LEVEL 1

    TITLE : AQSON level 1

    GENRE : Fantasy, fiction

    AUTHOR : Sreejib ( Koel Ganguli )

    PAGES : 410

    PRICE : 399 INR

    RATINGS: ***** ( 5 stars)

I received a review copy of AQSON level 1 in exchange for an honest review. I thank Sreejib (koel) for being so kind enough to send me a hard copy, or else it would have been a great loss not reading this book.

Before I get into the review, I have just have one word for AQSON level 1 – “OUTSTANDING”

This is the best ever Fantasy book I have read this year – 2016 . The truth is I was never a fan of much fantasy books (exception – Harry potter series) and now there’s  AQSON , I am literally obsessing over it now that’s where the author has left us with the book.

I have so much to tell that I might forget to mention a few things, I will always come back and update. I have no clue where to begin from, so let me just dive in to the review.

To be honest I am not a fan of Greek mythology ( I don’t mind reading though ), the characters are basically drawn from Greek myth, the characterisation and plot was so good that I had an instant liking towards Greek mythology.

Kuddos to koel for bringing out such a beautiful and a unique concept which involves politics, college life, angels, weapons, games, magic and what not. This book was definitely refreshing

I swear that there are so many scenarios in this book where you will definitely feel “Oh damn!! I never saw that coming …. I should have known “etc. Likes there’s so much of twists and turns in the story.

I bet no one can ever hate this book and rate it below 4.5 stars, because its soooooooo amazing.

    THE PLOT:

The plot is basically set where Team Lucifer and Team God set a game called AQSON, where the goal of the game is set to be the Indian PM’s position. Both team Lucifer and team God has raised weapons to win the game of AQSON. So winning AQSON is the theme of the book.

On the other end there’s politics happening, and the concept of Indian student politics rises, where a bunch of students from universities join hands to form a student political party called ‘PEERS’ working in unison towards a project called ‘ME’. PEERS work towards achieving it and there’s political fights happening.

Meanwhile team Lucifer makes a counter move and the game AQSON officially begins.

I have kept the plot spoiler free, because the author has taken much effort to make this book a success and by any means I would not spoil that. Adding to that unlike other books people would prefer to read a spoiler free review for such a brilliant plot.

    THE CHARACTERS:

Trust me this book has too many characters, but only a few are the main ones. There’s Yuvrani – the weapon of team Lucifer, she is the Pandora’s Box aka called as pithos. She is smart, brave, and powerful and has complete knowledge of the game and her team. She is portrayed as a very strong player and she has this ability to travel to peoples mind. (Isn’t that super cool??)

On the other hand there’s Toya an innocent, simple girl who believes to be a normal human being, while she had no clue that she is for a reason, a reason that to play for team God. When her identity is revealed she breaks down finding it difficult to accept the fact that she is immortal until the game ends.

Then there is JOB and Vanraj the Guardian angels of Toya and Yuvrani respectively. These angels are the Vice captains of the either teams, and they are given the power to mould/give their weapons the shape they want to. Hence Vanraj moulded pithos in a human form.

You will definitely fall in love with the three other friends of Toya – AJ, Ollie, and Goenka, their friendship element is so strong that we wish we had such friends in real. The author has written such friendship scenes, which make us feel warm. The characters are quite funny at times, we tend to laugh out, and that’s the intensity of the characters.

Not to forget sky, that girl’s characterisation was the best, she is one such character made me laugh over her dialogues.

Who is sky?? shhh .. Well you will know… Read the book

Other characters include Lucifer, God, Karna, Amba, Rahul, appy, Sid, party leaders etc.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK:

    –  Plot

    – Characters

    – Writing style:  The book had to the point, crisp and clear writing. Sometimes when we read a particular book we happen to re-read a few sentences or pages due to its lack of clarity. (Trust me it’s happened to me a couple of times while reading some books.) But koel’s writing style was a Bang on!!  She literally nailed AQSON.

I have to mention this here or I literally die out of excitement… I loved this part where Yuvrani travels into the minds of PEERS – Toya, Ollie, Aj, Goenka, Rahul and Appy. The author had done perfect justice to this part, hats off to her imaginative mind.

WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE BOOK:

Naah am kidding … I hate nothing about the book

How can I hate anything in a book if it is given 5 stars?

    COMING TO THE END:

This book was one of my wisest choices to review; else I would have missed all the fun and goodness in the book. This book is really captivating, it captivates your heart and soul and still you get to ask more of it.

I was never into liking politics; this book gave a whole new definition to politics. It took politics to a next level.

I am eagerly waiting to know what happens next, I hope the sequel to this book does justice to the writing style and characterisation without losing its essence.

    Have you chosen your team??

I have choose my team and

The Game does not end here, the Game just began.

Let the Battle begin!! Let the angels rise!! Let the weapons strike!!

                                    Team Lucifer  v/s Team God

  • Could You Measure Your Devotion?

    Could You Measure Your Devotion?

This is a review of the book Thirukkolur Ammaal Varththaigal by Madhurakavi daasan TCA Venkatesan based on the narration by Swami Ramanujar. its about various milestones in the History regarding Lord Vishnu according to the Hindu Beliefs.

In life, self satisfaction leads to happiness. But when it comes to the point of devotion, it depends upon the Lord’s satisfaction in our service and devotion to him, that gives us His blessings and happiness. Self pride and contentment should be avoided in the act of devotion. Considering Hinduism, there is no strict rules and constraints been framed for its followers. It has given greater freedom so that people expose love on their religious beliefs rather than just following the boring rules.

The story is about Thirukkolur Ammaal who places 81 questions while answering Sri Ramanujar’s question of her leaving Thirukkolur, a holy place where everyone actually wants to have a life even by struggling for food and clothing. Thirukkolur Ammaal meets Sri Ramanujar on her way while leaving that place. She is extremely devoted to the Lord Vishnu yet she places various historical incidents as a comparison of her devotion to the Lord. Hinduism believes that Lord Vishnu has taken about 9 forms (avatars) and the 10th one is yet to come at the end of this world. The questions of Thirukkolur Ammaal revolves around the incidents that happened during these 9 forms of the Lord and also about the Aazhvaars. Aazhvaars are those devotees, who are usually poets and sages that spend their life in servicing Lord Vishnu and there are 12 devotees who has been given the status of Aazhvaar. Here we shall look at few questions placed by Thirukkolur Ammaal.

Note : The book is basically in Tamil (the regional language of Tamil Nadu), and hence a translation of the questions in English is being included at the end of each explanation.

    Chapter 1:

In her 36th question she asks “iru maalai eendheno thondaradippodiyaar poley?” which has a beautiful story behind it.

Thondaradippodi Aazhvaar is the one, who lived in Srirangam, a place at Tiruchirappalli.  In order for serving the Lord with flowers, he maintained a garden in his personal care. From that garden, everyday, he used to make beautiful garlands and present them to Sri Ranganatha, ( The form of Shri Vishnu at that temple ). The word “iru” in this question of Thirukkolur Ammaal has two meanings – one is “great” and the other is “two”. In the first sense, it may be regarded that the Aazhvaar provided wonderful flower garlands and also provided great word garlands to the Lord. They were great because Aazhvaar considered himself as the dust under the feet of the Lord and gave the garlands only as pure service to the Lord. In the second sense, it may be regarded that the Aazhvaar provided two wonderful garlands to the Lord. One was a ‘poo maalai’ – that is, a flower garland and the other was a ‘paa maalai’ – that is, a word garland. It is also believed that the number two refers to the two word garlands that Aazhvaar wrote – Thirumaalai and Thiruppalli Ezhuchchi. Thirukkolur Ammaal is asking “Did I provide the Lord with such great garlands, as Thondaradippodi Aazhvaar did?”. From this question, we could see how she explains the Aazhvaar’s greatest devotion to the Lord in his best works and compares herself as not so great as the Aazhvaar.

    Chapter 2:

In her 38th question she questions, “avan mayni aaneno thiruppaanar poley?”.

Thiruppanaazhvaar who was born in a field in Uraiyur, near Srirangam was picked up by a person from the clan of Pana’s (singers) and brought up. Standing in the banks of Kaveri river with a veena in his hand he used to sing the praises of Lord Ranganatha. The Lord decided to get him to Srirangam and acted a play through His brahmin devotee Lokasaranga Muni. One time, when he saw Thiruppanaazhvaar singing, he tried to attract his attention to ask him to move away while he fetched the water, but as Aazhvaar was immersed in singing he did not take notice. So, Lokasarangar threw a stone at him to get his attention. The stone hit his head and caused him to bleed. Aazhvaar then realized what was happening and stepped away. Lokasarangar then returned to Srirangam, where the Lord asked him to apologize to the great devotee ThiruppanaAazhvaar and bring him into Srirangam. Lokasarangar returned to Aazhvaar and offered to carry him on his shoulders. When Lokasarangar brought Aazhvaar in front of Lord Ranganatha inside the Srirangam temple, Aazhvaar sings the magnificent Amalanadhi Piran pasuram enjoying the view of divine body of the Lord from feet to the head. ( This method of visualizing the Lord from toe to head is called as Paadhaadhikesa dharisanam ) At the end of the ten pasurams, Aazhvaar disappeared from this world and attained to lotus feet of Lord Ranganatha. Thirukkolur Ammaal is asking “Did I become the target of His divine grace and attain His divine feet like Thiruppanaazhvaar did?”

    Chapter 3:

In her 43rd question she questions “Poosa kodutheno kooniyai poley?”

Krishna entered Mathura along with Balarama on the invitation of Kamsa through Akrura. He first met a washerman, asked for some new clothes. But the washerman, who worked for Kamsa, refused. So, they defeated him, took some clothes, put them on and left. Next, they met a florist and accepted fragrant garlands from him. Then, as they were walking, they saw young and pretty lady who had a hunchback ( that’s why Thirukkolur Ammaal calls her ‘kooni’ which means hunchback). In her hand, she was carrying many types of fragrant sandal. Krishna looked at her and said “O beautiful girl! Who are you taking this sandalpaste for?” She replied “O beautiful one! I am taking this sandalpaste for Kamsa”. Krishna and Balarama asked her for same sandal. She gave them some and they rejected it as artificially scented. She gave them a different variety and they rejected it as being meant for kings. Pleased that they were able to discern good fragrance from bad, she gave them sandal paste that matched their divine bodies. They wore it with pleasure.

Thirukkolur Ammaal is asking “Did I give fragrant paste to the Lord like the hunchback did without thinking about consequences?”

    Chapter 4:

In her 51st question she asks “ingum undu enreno prahlaadhanai poley?”

Hiranyakashpu, an asura, was very cruel just as his brother Hiranyaksha who was killed by Lord Vishnu. So Hiranyakashpu developed great hatred toward Him. He performed great penance toward Brahma, obtained several boons from him and started ruling this world and put forth the command that no one should worship Sriman Narayana (Lord Vishnu) and instead everyone should worship him. Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. Despite being born to this evil asura, Prahlada was a great devotee of Sriman Narayana and prayed only to Narayana. This infuriated Hiranya and he began many attempts at torturing and even killing him. Prahlada’s mind was always set on Narayana and as such Hiranya was unable to do anything to him. In spite of everything that Hiranya did to him, Prahlada showed no anger toward him. Instead he advised Hiranya “Vishnu is the antaryami to everything in this universe. Being that the case, where is the idea of considering some as friends and some as enemies.  Just as He is inside me, so too He is inside you. He is present everywhere.” At that time, Hiranya showed a pillar and asked Prahlada if He was in it. Prahlada answered that He was everywhere including that pillar. When Hiranya wrecked that pillar, Vishnu appeared as Narasimha (one of the avatars) and killed Hiranya by ripping him with his finger nails.

Thirukkolur Ammaal is asking “Did I say with great conviction that He is everywhere including here (in this pillar), like Prahlada did?”

    Inference:

In every incident that happened with the avatars of Lord Vishnu there was wonders that people couldn’t believe so easily. Extreme devotion and sincere prayers has made such events occur and thus Thirukkolur Ammaal reveals all these novel events through her questions. She considers herself inferior in devotion by comparing with all these Aazhvars and sages. Hence, she doesn’t pose self satisfaction in her devotion to the Lord and seeks for His grace. Considering the moral of this book,

TRUE DEVOTION TO GOD SHOULD BE IMMEASURABLE.

If we show real love towards god without any expectation, he will surely shower his valuable blessings that we deserve for our faith on Him.

  • Inferno (Dan Brown) book review

    Inferno (Dan Brown) book review

‘Inferno’ is a global bestseller book in the non-fiction genre not just because its a product of Dan Brown. It is an actual mind blowing phenomena where you get merged with the Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, the lead protagonist. This book is a roller coaster ride throughout the intire Italy. You can find yourself glancing at the great artworks and monuments that formed up during the Renaissance period there saving the money you the bucks meant for your pending Italian trip (Excuse the exaggeration !).

The way of portraying the characters is par excellence. You can literally feel the state of mind of each character in depth.
His style of writing is the aspect that keeps you glued to your couch until you finish the book. From a intriguing start, he splits the ongoings into parallel events that converges at the end to a dramatic end that provides us a launchpad to think beyond the box.
The central idea that reigned over this book is the sure shot doomsday we will be facing due to the exponential rise of the world population. The ‘antagonist’ of this book, Bertrand Zobrist, a psychic billionaire geneticist have set a plague that claims to wipe out a major chunk of people from the face of earth within a couple of days. Sounds alarming, right ? The same is the pace of this action packed thriller right from the very beginning !

Will Langdon be able to stop the seemingly cruel disaster ? Is he doing a justice by doing so ? Is Zobrist the actual Messiah ?

To get an answer to plethora of questions like this, you have to read this fast paced thriller..the name is ‘INFERNO’!
