Rakesh was late for the second time in a week, and he knew the boss would be furious. His appearance a little shabby, he stepped into the office after hurriedly getting ready on the way. He walked to his desk, trying to grab as little attention as possible, only to turn around to meet eyes filled with rage. His boss, Mr. Kapoor, had made it clear to all the employees that discipline would be key to their job performances. As a result, Rakesh was called into his office in order to get an earful. Rakesh knew he was walking on thin ice. He decided to give it his all to be better at his job. But, he could not stop it from happening again. He was let go with a last warning.

After two days off, Rakesh had made-up his mind to not give his boss a chance to fire him. He woke-up even earlier and tried to hurry through his morning routine. Mr. Kapoor was going to the office in his car when he recognized Rakesh ahead of him. Before he could get a good look, Rakesh made a left turn. Wanting to know the reason behind Rakesh’s tardiness, he followed Rakesh down the street. He stopped and saw Rakesh on a bicycle, with two thailas of newspapers on both handles of the bicycle. Rakesh stopped in front of a house. He took out a newspaper, folded it and tied around the rubber-band between his teeth to keep it in place. He got off of his bicycle and threw the folded newspaper to the balcony on the third floor with all his might. Mr. Kapoor saw him do this till he reached the end of the street.

There was a little hut at the end of the street, where a family of five was living. Rakesh walked up to the hut and found Billu, the young boy whose job Rakesh was doing. Billu had severely injured his foot one day and realized that he would not be able to continue his job for a while. Rakesh gave Billu the payment he got for the work he did and gained a huge smile in return. Mr. Kapoor’s eyes filled with tears. He backed out of the street and headed to the office. Rakesh did the same, making sure to not be late. He got to the office on time and took a deep breath of relief. But, once again, he was called into the boss’s cabin. Perplexed and terrified, he went into the cabin. Mr. Kapoor sat on his desk, with soft eyes and asked him about what he had seen that morning. Rakesh explained the situation to him. Mr. Kapoor gave Rakesh a small smile and let him get to work.

Such a cute and short, subtle story. This is some story we’ve all read or heard in our childhood(something similar) but yet when I started reading it, i was compelled to finish it. Felt like a drop of sweetness in a less sweetened tea, only a drop of it made the tea taste its best. Keep the spirit!

I read your story “To Err is Human” and I really enjoyed it. It’s a sweet and heartwarming tale that reminds us about the importance of compassion and understanding. The character of Rakesh is relatable, and I loved how he turned his mistake into an opportunity to help someone in need. The ending was touching and left me with a smile. Great job! Keep up the good work!
